The Guardians of the Galaxy movie was a surprise success. This game suffered the opposite fate and is extremely underrated and underappreciated. I like how it differs from the movie's interpretation of the characters, the music is great, and the gameplay, while simple works well enough. This is a great Marvel video game and worth playing if you're a fan of the Guardians.

Really awesome story and fun gameplay. Is just a tad long winded for my taste, but very enjoyable.

There's a perfectly ok game here but my biggest gripe is that gameplay just gets a lil bit repetitive, basically towards the end I rushed through every combat section just because story was the one thing that really managed to hook me.

gameplay absurdamente divertida e trilha sonora fantástica

Pretty ok game, liked the story ok

Xbox Game Pass!

Guardians of the Galaxy

I really really enjoyed this game. The story was really good and the writing was the icing on the cake. The Guardians really felt like they did in the movies. A band of misfits that found a family between themselves.

The combat was really fun for me. I can see how sometimes it would get repetitive, but for me, I had fun with every encounter. One aspect I really liked is that, as Star-Lord, you really felt like a team leader; commanding the team during combat, hyping up the team, and choosing dialog that affects how you're team is feeling in the moment.

My one major complaint was during a mission to find Fin Fang Foom and my game completely glitched and I couldn't tell Drax to move a rock for me to progress forward. I didn't find it a big deal and decided to wait for an update to hopefully fix the game, but there was no such fix until 6-7 months after first getting it. After I was able to pass that, I enjoyed the rest of my experience with the game.

Action-packed space adventure that always pushes you forward while brandishing its established cast and setting to reward paying attention.
+ distinctly flawed characters who become very endearing by the end
+ many creative and visually stunning environments
+ entertaining team banter with player input throughout
+ decent story featuring a good number of impactful choices
+/- unusual combat system that showcases everyone fighting together beautifully but also relies too much on auto-aim and spammable skills
- some exceptionally embarrassing dialogue
- unskippable cutscenes making random quick time events even worse
- extremely linear level design for the most part

Even though have some Marvel fatigue, this was a good story based game.

surprisingly good story and character development

I can’t believe I’m saying this but this game was genuinely pretty damn good, LOL.

I know very little, if not, close to NOTHING about GotG, let alone care about anything Marvel (except Spideyman). All I knew about this game was that it was decent! And not too long. So, why not?

And yeah. This was GOOD. It was linear (for this game, it’s a good thing imo), the combat was not the best and the story is predictable. But OH BOY you could not prepare me for the absolutely incredible chemistry and dynamics between the cast. It’s been awhile since I’ve laughed so hard in a game. And I did not give a single crap about GotG before this game but somehow I managed to laugh and cry over each character within the 26 hours of playing this. The banter is amazing and no doubt the highlight of this game. Though I admit having 4 other people yelling over your character in almost every fight is kinda chaotic lmao.

The puzzles are not complex but I commend the devs for having each individual character be useful in their own ways. The game has a lot of charm and plenty of great moments (I’m talking about a certain space llama and singing part, or the middle finger that was well hidden during a certain cutscene lmao).

Definitely give this game a shot if you’re looking for something shorter to play, even if you’re not into Marvel. I walked in with low expectations and walked out with a goofy ass smile on my face. I don’t know what the movie’s rendition of the characters are like but fuck yeah, I loved this squad.

cute game love this version of them more then the mcu one

Shooting stuff is fun.

Highkey a horrendous story and the level design is terrible and I hate the dialogue between characters getting cut off every time I move ahead a little. But the combat in this game is so fun. Using all the different abilities and the guardians while fighting is amazing. Definitely give it a shot if you like having fun.

It's an idle game where you don't know what you're doing.

How did this capeshit not have a single character I hated with pretty decent gunplay, this is highly unprecendented

I activated a super and got Rickrolled I'd like to have a word with these developers

Fun story, repetitive gameplay and drags on a bit, ended up trying to end combat sections as quickly as possible so I could just watch the cutscenes. Also there's like a 3 hour section in this game where Rocket becomes unbearable, I nearly gave up

Now THIS is what I want to see from AAA games. I just don't know that I can say about this game...It's just really, reaaally good.

I like this interpretation of the guardians, the game looks fantastic, the writing is good and the characters are funny, the motion capture and animations are amazing, there are a few cool alternate costumes for each character, and the combat system is really fun and engaging.

I adore the idea of pausing the entire fight every once in a while so Peter can have a quick pep talk with his team, and depending on the approach you take, you either inspire all of them or fail miserably and only you get powered up. It's just too good.

I also really like the selection of licensed music they picked. They were clearly heavily inspired by the James Gunn movies, but they still picked songs that the movies never used, while still composing original ones I think. Actually, the entire game feels more like its own unique take on the guardians and these crazy characters; it isn't just a one to one copy of the movie versions, which I appreciate.

Only a few times I felt like the writing was a little bit too corny, or the character animations were too awkward when looking at what the characters are supposed to be expressing. But that was never too distracting.

Overall, this was a really pleasant experience, and a really fun and exciting game. Please give it a shot if you haven't, chances are you will really enjoy it, even if you are not a fan of capeshit or Marvel. It is much more than just that.

Truly the most "okay" game I have ever played. Like this might be the poster boy for milquetoast AAA IP-based games.

P.S If a sequel is ever made I will probably play it.

If I was going to give this the shortest, most concise possible review to get across to people what the experience of playing this game is like, I think I might go with this: think about being able to play through one of the Guardians movies with slightly (slightly!) lesser writing quality pushed through a sieve of modern AAA action gaming tropes.

I think that would broadly cover a lot of my thoughts on the game, without getting into qualitative analysis. That description really does cover both the good & the bad of this game, which is why even though parts of this game are really expertly executed I settled on a more middling score. In terms of visual & audio presentation, writing, acting, etc; this really is pretty much a B-Team approach to one of the James Gunn Guardians films. Maybe the comedy isn't quite as sharp, maybe the performances aren't quite as good, maybe the visuals aren't quite as weird or fantastical, but the fact this is able to get pretty much right on the line should still be seen as pretty impressive. I would say that I found the majority of this charming & easy to get through, with a few caveats: the nature of the game scenario format makes it feel like we spend way too much time with the Guardians bickering & arguing, certain humor elements feel horribly out of place & needed to be excised (i.e. awful outdated Reddit humor like the space llama, space cursing or Adam Warlock's alliteration), and I think some of the dialogue decisions felt arbitrary or unclear what is meant to be important (maybe that was the intention I know, but it just annoyed me). The main cast performances are all really good & I think most importantly the story is pretty good & structured well for a video game. Since a lot of this game tries to be closer to the comics than the MCU, the plot here also feels more comic book & I think that helps it be broader in scope in a more natural way.

When it comes to gameplay I also start to have more reservations, as all the things done well here are balanced against tropes that I get sick of seeing in modern AAA games. Shimmy through wall cracks, scripted in-game sequences where the game expects you to react a certain way (I both liked but was constantly annoyed by the fact the team yells at you when you go off to look for secrets, great for writing purposes but irritating as a player) & a combat system that feels all to familiar. Sure, I think the combat system is set up really well in making it a rotation of special skills & which to use when; a system that rewards movement & energy, but the handwaving of Quill's "elemental guns" feels very trope-heavy & the combat engagements can get repetitive (though I think once everything is unlocked near the end game fights get a little more complex, and most of the boss encounters are good). Secret-hunting is fairly easy to pull off, though I feel embarrassed for how easy most of it is but still having missed a lot of the costumes. They also don't entice you much to do a NG+, I doubt I'll ever revisit this ever again even though I liked it a decent amount. I did hate hate all the young Peter sections though, as I had no desire in that setting to read all the flavor text & engage with it all. Most of the "forced walking" segments in the game were a little annoying.

Overall, for a game I got for free from Epic, I would have paid a decent amount to play it fully after trying it out. One of the few action games to flow fairly well as a movie, and kind of the positive middle ground that I'd want AAA games to ride in if they aren't making out-and-out masterpieces, which happens very rarely.

Really fun, but Chris Pratt is missing.
