I love that Kirby wasn't even given the personality of "happy" in this game, he just spends every cutscene going "=|"
I don't know if it was part of the original version or it was just a Virtual Console glitch, but either way it was a legit masterstroke to stop the music for a second every time King Dedede fell on his fat fucking face in the final boss battle

decent enough proof of concept, but nothing to really sink your teeth into. the only kirby game that makes you feel like you're actually playing something made for children specifically. i was excited to play the more difficult 2nd loop, but it didn't really change things up that much. probably the worst mainline kirby game next to squeak squad.
Cute little game, with surprisinly clean movement and its crazy to see the amount of character that you can squeeze into gameboy sprites. Kirby's dances at the end of levels give me life.
Biggest "flaw" is how short the game is and how easy it can be (even if I did cheese the game by using continues), but for me this instead makes it a nice game to pop in and beat in an hour, without necessarily having to deal with the annoyance that other gameboy games like Mario Land instill by booting you back to the start with their life system.

It’s actually not a bad game. The controls got some getting used to because I kept wanting to play it like a Super Mario Bros. game. The thing is, I have no patience with it’s semi-non linear level structure. I don’t know where I’m going, and I kept dying because I would float instead of jump and vise versa. I’m glad I dabbled with the first entry and tried it, but it’s just not for me. I’ll just watch the full 22-minute gameplay video on YouTube and call it a day. I have a feeling I won’t much like the 2D Kirby games. Might skip to the 3D ones.
Nowadays it's kinda weird to play a kirby game without the ability copy mechanic. But so it forces the game to actually depent even more on good level-design, encounter design and pure platforming. And for a starter of the series it still holds up pretty well and presents a roughly 30 minutes long journey of happy and pure jump 'n' run enjoyment. It even has some replay-value cuz of the extra mode.
