Shadow of War is a solid game, worth buying if you can pick it up at a discounted price. The world is beautiful and detailed but sadly sectioned into smaller levels. The combat is solid and there are a lot of options for different fighting styles. The story is decent, nothing special, but serviceable.
The nemesis system is the star of the show, and it makes sure you always have your own unique playthrough. However, the system only shines if you die, which is a small problem as I found the game to be way too easy, even at harder difficulties.

I love and hate this game in equal parts. On one hand, it improves on a lot of the mechanics and abilities from the first game. On the other, this game is full of bugs that impact combat like getting stuck in walls/objects, enemy attack indicators not showing up for no reason, enemies falling through the ground or being unable to attack, and more. Also the 1st is guilty of this too but it gets really repetitive. Every region is the same loop of activities with a 50/50 mix of engaging and boring story missions tossed in. The story is cool, the combat (when working as intended) is fluid and rich with cool abilities, and the environments are amazing. But, those little issues can really sour your enjoyment.
There's a really cool 'build an army and seige fortresses' game hidden underneath a TON of bloat. Maps are unnecessarily larger, you have multiple armies to fight now, and the entire first act is a colossal waste of time plot-wise. Unfortunately, by the time you get into the real meat of the game in Act 2, I tired of the gameplay loop. Shadow of Mordor had a cool system that needed fleshed out. I think had they simply done that and left everything else thin, this would be a better-paced game.
This series narratively also feels far too bogged-down by being a 'Lord of the Rings' game. I am so sick of Gollum. He can't do anything interesting plot-wise in these spinoffs as it would contradict the books. Surely nobody likes Gollum THAT much that you'd want to see him in every LotR product.
I'd love to see the Nemesis system used in a leaner game, without a large franchise weighing it down. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening thanks to the patent on the system.
