Not bad, not great. Having a tough time getting used to the battle system. The story and visuals are what are keeping me intrigued.

Its a pretty solid game. But kind of bogged down by its combat and lack of original characters. The antagonist's reason for his plan is also really bad.

I like the bomb guy, I hope he doesn't die.

absolutely gorgeous, tho the story sometimes feels a little paper thin

this game is great i love the story and characters and in right direction to future of paper mario games and paper mario color splash and The Origami King are so much better than paper mario sticker stars and huey and olivia are so much better than kersti

Combat system is dreadful but it's better than Color Splash in every way, especially in terms of story, characters, and originality.

The most recent game I've finished as of logging. Pretty good game, but the combat gets pretty repetitive. That being said, it's consistently really funny, and that soundtrack is SO good.

Battle system is horrendous, gave up on the game entirely

Couldn't be bothered to get further than the first boss.
Thank you mom for getting me this for Christmas tho 🙌 🙌 love you mom🫶

terrible gameplay but surprisingly really great story that got me emotional at some point for some reason

Definitely better than Sticker Star.

Origami King is grand, fun to explore through an open-worldesque structure with events, minigames and collectables. When it comes down to the world design; towns, dungeons and overworld areas it is the cream of the crop accompanied by a sharp narration mostly hilarious and some other times even surprisingly dark, as a true staple to the series Origami King holds no slack in breaking conventions.

All in all, Origami King is for the most part a good time, it's not the faithful return old veterans would want, the battle system in particular will forever be a divisive factor, though the rest of the game carries the same creativity and wits that has run through most of the franchise.

Not a fan of the battle system, but good story.

The effort to turn things around is apparent. The game plays better and the story is actually memorable once again.

its biggest flaws are the combat system in non-bosses and lack of unique npcs but besides that the game is very good in every other aspect, especially graphics wise

Parts of this are better than anything in 64 or TTYD. It comes really close to greatness in a lot of areas and sometimes it achieves it, but there are a few key spots where it misses the mark. Which is a shame, because like I said, the good parts are amazing.

I don't personally mind the newer direction (as someone who has not played Sticker Star), but I would prefer to see a return to form following the TTYD remake. Here's hoping.

i remember buying this game when it came out and thoroughly enjoying it. the structure isn't level based anymore which is a really great step up. they actually do really interesting things throughout the story and i was enjoying how each new area had interesting things going on. it felt like a full fledged adventure, yes the combat isn't the same as the old paper mario games, but on it's own this game is a great time and i really like it.

Completion Criteria: Credits Rolled

I think most people who go into this game with some knowledge are going to go in with a little with a little bit of bias. I was there for Sticker Star and I disliked that I completely skipped this and Colour Splash. I've heard the "its not so bad" but that's not particularly uncommon given a maligned game. And to my surprise they weren't wrong...sort of.

So ironically the game isn't good but the common narrative is that "the game has no soul" which actually may be it's most saving grace. Because the real soul of Mario RPGs has really been it's writing and this game has some pretty good writing. It messes up in some areas but for the most part it does well. It's just that nothing else in the game really supports it to well. In general, it's combat has somewhat of an identity crisis. No exp and breakable equipment are pullovers from Sticker Star that were hated for good reason. It incentivizes you to dislike combat and leads to you making the game more difficult for yourself. By the final boss, I had not used any legendary equipment as I expected to need it for the final boss. There is a party system in the game that feels like it's was shoved in last minute to people please. They pretty much do nothing because the goal of the combat is to wave clear in. Hitting an enemy before combat also does nothing because you only hit one enemy and, as mentioned before, the goal of combat is to clear the wave in one round.

Combat itself comes in three modes. Normal Encounter, Boss Encounter, and Action game. Normal encounters begin interesting but they take so much time that they are not worth doing by the end. On the flip side, sometimes you just don't have to deal with it, if you are strong enough you can just kill an enemy with an advantage attack. and some enemies you fight by just attacking them in the world until they explode. Bosses on the other hand have you following a maze to line up actions. This is fun in concept but again, it's more just you doing a puzzle and spending the bounty of coins you have to get a bit more time to logic them. Also.

Gameplay isn't the only issue, of course I have to bring up Characters because they have half done it. There are some meaningfully different toads which are fun characters but that only leads to the disastifaction of how many normal toads there are. We are in toad town rescuing the residents so from a world context, it makes sense for there to be a ton of toads, and as a collectible it's kind of great because they are all so homogenous but when you find toads that aren't hidden, or important to distinguish then, please put some effort it. It's not acceptable to think you can design an important npc by giving him a red jacket instead of a blue jacket. It's really weird when it's almost commented on with Bo-omb. They provide a pretty mature story and an extremely unexpected and insane concept of suicide bombing for you. And in the pen-ultimate scenario. Olivia notices they all look the same AND THEN completely ruin any emotional feeling for them by having you shoot them to their death on mass. This wouldn't have so out of tune if you even provided him with a hat, even if I think that's the bare minimum.

So on a more positive note, the world is pretty enjoyable to explore, some of the areas later on especially (maybe due to the reduction of necessary fights due to vehicles. Maybe felt like there was a bit of filler to try make the game longer which it could do without. I imagine the Great Sea would have been a chore if I didn't immediately go back for the upgraded engine. Weirdly there's a lot of instant Game Overs by the end of the game that really dampen the mood for exploration.

Some of my final complaints that I noted down. I lost the initiative to 100% this game early on but I even ignored rescuing all toads due to a few things. First is the lack of meaningful fast travel, I don't mean pipes, just the spin dash. The idea of walking to some of these areas and accidentally messing up a hammer swing was a scary thought. No technical reason due to the breakable equipment keeping me geared for the finale and, ironically too clear on gathering all accessories meant no incentive there either. Thirdly, no visceral reason. Even though the goal is to rescue toads to bring back to toad town, by the time it's mostly full, it still looks so incredibly sparse. Your lucky to get 2-3 toads in the same screen at the same time that I just stopped caring about wanting to see it full.

There are a lot of comfy scenes in the game. Coffee and Rest Areas were a nice breather and I always looked forward to them. This is a good place to note Olivia may be the strongest "companion" character in any game I've played. She acts childish but it feels quite real without being annoying, Mario feels quite fatherly ironically even though he doesn't really do anything which is an achievement to her writing.

So I was debating giving this a 3.5 but I'm not sure I can justify it given that I want to give it to it in spite of the gameplay. I don't think they can get away with being sticker star and super paper mario and more. The platforming RPG has legs still give it another shot in Super Paper Mario 2 and work on improving the base RPG and maybe we can get back on track

Massive step forward. The world feels so alive, and there's tons of things to explore. Visuals are amazing and music even more so. I'm also one of the few people that really love the battle system (except for not leveling up, that sucks). But it's sad to hear the devs talking about the limitations that have been layed on them for no reason whatsoever. And they don't like it too, you can feel them, fighting against those limitations and trying to push the boundary of what they're allowed to do. I wonder how this game would've turned out had the dev's gotten free reign to do what they pleased.

(Also, sidenote: Why the FUCKK are modern mario games so obsessed with gatekeeping 100% completion?? It's driving me CRAZY. If you use any combat items (like the fire flower), you're immediately not eligible for a true 100% save file. AND THEY DON'T TELL YOU THIS!! I found out after ALMOST 100%ing the game, gave up on it when i heard this. Utter BS.)

Not as good as the other Paper Mario games but better than sticker star.

You know? I was enjoying my time with this game when I started playing it. I never played Sticker Star or Color Splash or any of the first few games outside of Super Paper Mario.

So yeah, I had pretty much no background on Paper Mario, so I was willing to give it a chance...And I did! I knew the game was getting somewhat good reviews, and I really didn't mind the combat system that much at first.

However...The more I played this game, the more I wished I was playing a traditional RPG. I don't like RPGs that much, but having to do this constant wheel puzzle bullshit, over and over again, even with the bosses...I just got pretty sick of it.

It's not like I hated the game or anything, but yeah, this is one of the few Switch games I actually regret buying, because by the end of it I was just eager to end the game and not having to deal with that anymore.

Other than the battle system, I would also say that this game still suffers from the same mediocrity the recent Paper Mario games suffer from in terms of characters and worldbuilding...It's just not interesting. When one of your bosses are a pair of scissors or a box of color pencils...You can't expect me to take this shit seriously.

It's fine. If you haven't played it, you are better off just waiting for the Thousand Year Door remake.

consistently very funny and enjoyable

I dont like it very much. Its boring. Thats it.

Pas le meilleur, pas le pire Paper Mario, ce jeu s'en sort bien en vrai

I don't care what the haters say. This game was great.

I don't want to just echo what everyone says and say "I think that if this was more like TTYD/Super blah blah blah," nothing would get done. However, I also want to talk about this game while fully backing up what I know. I 100% completed this, and I mean it. I didn't just beat the game. I experienced absolutely EVERYTHING this game had to offer, including some things that the average casual player will never see. I have explored every crease and fold of this paper world, so I think I know how to discuss it.

The main game experience is actually pretty good. There are undeniable flaws, but that stuff's for suckers. I liked the puzzle combat stuff and appreciated that the puzzles had to actually be good first and foremost. They ramped up pretty well, including some of the boss puzzles (the bosses were neat. Only one bland Mario boss in the lot, so we're stacked pretty well).

I do not think the 100% experience is worth it unless you are 100% sure you are okay doing it. Go through it and complete as much of the game as you feel comfortable, but don't do it out of obligation. I did it because I wanted to. In the end, isn't that why we play video games? To do what we want to do? Anyway, I liked this a lot. Very good game even if it doesn't hold a candle to the first three. Best modern Paper Mario by a long shot.

Oh yeah, I wrote this a month ago and just forgot to post it. Sorry.

Almost a good Paper Mario game. It is probably the best one since they decided to stop making good paper mario games though

This game has a lot of unique ideas, and really nice and alive feeling areas that are bogged down by the horrible battles and tedious sequences that couldve been shortened.

I believe the creators really tried to make an interesting game with the restrictions Nintendo has put on the reason Paper Mario games and I respect it. A lot of funny moments and writing make it a more enjoyable experience but it does feel like too much. The toads are always trying to make some sorta quip or one liner. Its better than flavor text, but some real writing wouldve made the toads jokes hit harder.

Also Goated for adding the lil' eurobeat song
