Lego City Undercover is like the Simpsons Hit & Run, but then made more kid-friendly, making this the second derivation from GTA. Similarly to GTA, the game has an open world that the player can mess around in, or they can do the story missions. The story involves undercover cop Chase McCain trying to catch an escaped criminal. If you’ve played a Lego game, then you get the general gameplay of the story missions, but messing around in the open world is where the real game is, like all GTA games and their derivatives. It’s an alright time, and I was glad to hear that it got ported to Switch, so a whole new audience of kids can experience it.
Played it on the Wii U, Switch, and PC. I keep coming back to this overlooked gem of the LEGO games. The city is so vibrant and detailed, the story is funny, the vehicle gameplay is the best in the series. It's memed as "LEGO GTA" but i feel like it undercuts the game. It's such a solid and replayable game and it's surprising that it was TT Fusions first attempt at a big AAA release, as they previously made the handheld ports of the lego games.
The original Lego city undercover is a lot better than the Chase Begins because beyond the main story, you were allowed to explore as much as you want. Also, they made good use of the Gamepad and I enjoyed driving around the map and crashing into stuff as a kid. The story itself is a lot of fun and is incredibly unique, also the cutscenes are hilarious and are some of my favorite parts of the game.
LEGO City Undercover is a silly game in the best way, I wish TT Games would do more games like this because the freedom to be able to write any story they want without it being tied to an IP makes for a lot better story and jokes than their usual games. However, I think I've just outgrown the LEGO game formula, as I found much of it is just too easy and not that fun to play, which is a massive shame as I've been looking forward to playing this for a while.
As a kid I was absolutely obsessed with this game. It scratched every little itch of what I wanted to be playing at that time being a detective game with limitless collectibles and things to do to feel like I would never truly finish it. Unsure how different it would feel to me now but was definitely a feature in my childhood
This is absolutely the best Lego game. I don't know what they did, but the writing was never better. The humour is so stupid that it was impossible to not fall in love with this game. As a big open world fan I really liked driving around the world and just doing nothing. I think it is kinda sad, that Lego games peaked here and this will probably stay that way.
