While year one might be a little slow, it's worth it to stick around. This is definitely the best simulation game I've played.

sometimes you just want a random homie to tell you they care, im here for you bros

Edit: Bumping this up to 3 stars now. The amount of updates and additions have served to really help the game out a lot, from balancing of ingredient requirements and additions of bugs, stone skipping, new animals to look after, interior decorating and more. Its still a very limited game and the fetch-quests still grind horribly at times but the sheer amount of additions and bug fixes have helped immensely.

Its cute and full of whimsy dont get me wrong but theres something just severely lacking from this and despite recent updates fixing bugs and adding a lot of side things such as bug catching and stone-skipping, it all just kinda feels a bit on the clunky and awkward side.

Take island decoration for instance. While having lots of campground furniture, lighting and other items around makes for some personality, the limitations behind item placement isnt quite as fun, not to mention the fact that the island is already quick busy and packed. A lack of interactivity with items doesnt help this feeling either.

The quests too fall under this category. Most of them just fall under item hunting with samey hints to guide you across to each item. There 'bearly' feels like theres any difference between collecting parcels to collecting muffins. Sure since a recent update you can now hug the bears but since the bears stick in one spot and dont interact with anything, they may as well be part of the scenery.

Its disappointing as im not against bite-sized gaming in this manner but the lack of variety just causes this game to miss the mark. Hopefully the updates continue and some of this starts to get ironed out.
