my sentiments exactly raisin, lol. One of the faster nopes I've ever given a video game

i'd still advocate for giving it a few cracks, like jax said its a pure boss rush game and not the brand of co-op run n gun that gunstar is so i can acknowledge its not for everyone (imo though i think its sharper in almost every way). everyone goes through being overwhelmed at first but it genuinely puts a lot of modern action games to shame once you dig into it

i can promise i was thrown off too when i first tried alien soldier - the first couple bosses especially are an enormous wall. but i promise the effort is worth it - it's not trying to be an arcade-y experience like gunstar, it's almost more like a DMC style game. You can't expect to brute force this, you really need to learn EVERY tool you have access too and never take any unnecessary hits.

The intro is so dumb it absolutely has to be on purpose and is therefore extremely funny

And thanks for the advocacy guys, I do get what they're going for. Game's just not for me, at least at the moment. I'm okay with that.

Also understandable, AS isn't for everyone and it takes practice to properly play it

so let me get this straight:
there's a terrorist group named scarlet and their being a bunch of bozos, and their leader epsilion eagle is gonna be assassinated, that doesnt work out and hes sent into like a warp hole or something. some dude named xi-tiger takes over but no one likes him, some random scientists kidnap kids who special powers or something, xi-tiger goes there and is all like "lol im gonna kill these kids" but epsilion eagle is in one of them and hes all like "bruh" he then turns into his true form birdman furry guy and chases after xi-tiger, but also another birdman furry guy shows up and is all evil?

the other bird guy iirc is espilon's original form given sentience, it's the giant eagle you fight on the space elevator

could be a mistranslation on the space-time thing. it reads more as epsilon's soul choosing to escape into space-time to protect himself, then imprinting on the boy in a sort of 'phoenix rising from the ashes' rebirth.

I find it stupid how you fight Xi-Tiger in stage 9 and then you fight a totally unrelated furry guy as the final boss, but wait this game hardly makes any sense in the first place

Late reply but iirc alien soldier wasnt finished and the programmer intended there to be way more bosses

yeah this fully finished boss of like a living hand is in the files, along with that there's the two missing phases of seven force and this cowboy rabbit (all three of these don't really do much when loaded though)

the tone of the story, to me, also implies Xi-Tiger is a mercenary or lower-rank in the grander scheme of things, so him not being the final boss doesn't feel anticlimactic because I didn't anticipate him being the big bad anyway. It also creates that kind of 'there's dudes STRONGER than this guy???' frame of reference for the later fights.

And I found the shmupulations interview quote about it:

Maegawa: The thing that really makes me cringe when I hear praise like that for Alien Soldier, is that there were so many things we were unable to finish, but we still had to release it. The Megadrive market was vanishing, so we had to put it out, but only about 50% of our ideas got included. Even the boss Seven Force Kaede only has five transformations.

However, I still think our initial concept was cool: “let’s make a boss with 100 jointed parts!” It’s no exaggeration to say that this was the first game ever to feature that level of multi-jointed sprite animation. I’m proud of that.
