Dead space es un survival horror sin survival. El jugador poco debe preocuparse por administrar sus recursos pues el juego llena los escenarios de cajas de suministros y también en las salas antes y después de cada tiroteo. Los encuentros con los necromorfos son, en su mayoría, poco desafiantes y simples. Los escenarios de combate también son muy simples lo cual ayuda a que los combates se sientan muy simples.
