(Disclaimer: SW4 and 4-II are the only mainline SW games I haven’t played though I did play Spirit of Sanada and Warriors Orochi 4 so my comparisons will be based on the ones I did play.)
I do feel the series needed some revamping with how characters from the early SW games would use the exact same moveset in titles where their movesets don’t work as well. Especially with my WO4 experience being just spamming hyper attacks and spells as the SW characters without using their actual moveset.
It tried something new and I think for the most part it worked out well. Hyper attacks went from brainless to the point of being repetitive as like when I played WO4 to being brainless with less repetition. The movesets themselves are also great and have a great feeling of individuality between each other. I do wish you could switch between them like woth DW7 and 8 though that’s somewhat remedied by playing as 2 characters.
The overall interpretation of the events is also something interesting, however I’ve never been invested in the story of any Warriors game and I find it actually more interesting to learn of the actual historical events. However, I did enjoy the completely new perspective and it shows how Nobunaga Oda can have a great variety of interpretations.
However, this game did leave me wanting a lot more out of it. Would have been nice to see even more events from the Sengoku Jidai that have never been in an SW game before. Doesn’t help
certain stages in Mitsuhide’s path are the exact same in Nobunaga’s with meaningless changes when it could’ve been a great opportunity to show a battle the Oda clan was not a part of which is something they did in Mitsuhide’s 2nd chapter.
It certainly is a unique spin on the series and despite the ups, downs, and changes I must say, I’m interested in seeing how the series will go after this. Maybe an SW5XL or SW5-II will give me those new things I wanted, but at the same time that would be Koei Tecmo being Koei Tecmo (For crying out loud, SW4 and 4-II are still full price after all these years I wonder why I have yet to play them).

Tatsuo Shinada pretty cool
