I'll give it some time before I decide if it's the best version, but there's a hell of a lot more effort here than most Square re-releases.

Honestly holds up better than I thought. The boss fights can be surprisingly good and it has one of the better narratives in the series. That being said though; the Melemele section is mostly awful and it has the usual modern Pokemon trappings, both in terms of gameplay and writing.

Guessing what would've been expanded in the cancelled deluxe versions is more fun than the game itself.

Not gonna lie, I don't see what everyone else sees in this.

Ten years later, mainline Pokemon hasn't gotten better this.

The game's plot isn't so great once you're over 18. The excellent soundtrack and engine more than make up though.

Holds up better than I thought. The plot has quite a few holes and the linearity makes the maps dull to explore, but the characters and music make up for it. The battle system is fun when it goes beyond RPS.

Definitely feels like it was rushed out for Black Friday. Worst main series game so far.

I wonder what made Archie pick the Red Orb for the obviously blue Kyogre.

Tons of great ideas, but the Game Boy memory prevents them from being full realised. Extremely cheap final level also brings the game down.

A bit loose, but Yokoi's team were surprisingly tasteful towards the formula.

Iffy Pokemon distribution aside, this pushed the Game Boy Color to its absolute limits.

Imperfect due to UI and route bloat problems, but the map structure makes it fun to come back to.

Backtracking and fetch quest moments aside, this is one of the best 8-bit games ever made.

Felt more like an action game than stealth as it progressed.
