best to ever to do it baby, medium defining experience that still holds up to this day.
Gameplay defined 3D action games, literally every single one gets their DNA from here. Dungeon crawling is fantastic, features some of the best temples in the entire series, the progression is still among the most satisfying in all of Zelda.
Storytelling is subtle but is one of the richer tales in the franchise, a coming of age story that really fuckin' hurts once you realize just how tragic the Hero of Time's story is.
The timeline split here is also such an engaging element of the game's story, having Link be sent back in time in order to relive his childhood that was stolen from him, while then having to lead a ruined Hyrule to a better future- sick af brotherman, love that shit.

idk, this was the second Zelda game I played, and it's still my favorite after all these years. I come back to it every now and then and have a grand old time no matter what, love this game man.

HAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

idk
it's difficult for me to put into words just how much I love FR. like, genuinely difficult. This game is pretty much just everything that there is to love about Xenoblade wrapped up into one package. I didn't cry at the end like with XC3 but damn did I get close, like I'll probably come back and clarify on how much I love this shit when I finally get back to replaying it but for now just like
This is peak. Genuine, actual non-overused meaning of the word. Just actual zenith of the medium storytelling, gameplay, characters, exploration, music, etc, etc etc.

this game makes me mad (not as mad as SwSh tho)
the core gameplay is the best (of the dual-release games) since BW2, straight up. Decent exploration, best difficulty since USUM, (which for Pokemon means i almost wiped like, once), best rival since Hugh, genuinely decent story with like, actually the best climax in the series surprisingly enough.
why oh why did it have to have like, a 3 year dev cycle then? this game did NOT need to come out in 2022 when PLA had JUST released.
everyone knows how shit this game runs. everyone knows all the bugs, everyone knows that it looks like shit. like, it's all this game is known for. it's genuinely deplorable and I'm SO glad I wasn't the one who paid for my copy.
if this game had gotten like a year or 2 more of dev time it could've been the best Pokemon game EVER, they could've pulled it off, but gamefreak and TPC are allergic to the idea of there not being a new mainline game every 2 seconds so it didn't happen. Now I'm stuck sitting here like a dumbass genuinely defending this game in a lot of aspects despite the fact that it sucks so much shit in so many other ones.
whatever, still like a 7/10, especially with the DLC, it's like a solid B+ and i wish it could've gotten more time. gamefreak is such a cancer company.

story bad (funny bad)
gameplay good (genuinely like top 5 at the very least)
not much to say about engage other than what's already been said by everyone else, it's just a solid ass entry into the series imo. fanservice was fun, I like enough of the characters to not really give a shit about the ones I don't like, the gameplay is disgustingly good, especially with how well balanced maddening is. and you know what- surprisingly, I actually ended up liking Alear.
great game!

flawed masterpiece is the easiest way to describe this game, which is a really generic way to do so and also applies to BotW, but idk, there's really not a better way of encapsulating how I feel about this game
overall the improvements from BotW are fantastic- plenty more things to explore within the overworld, the physics were dialed up to an 11 and the things you can do with Ultrahand are near endless, side quests feel more involved and shrines are 10x better than BotW
exploring the depths was great imo, it definitely could've used more varied biomes but overall I really enjoyed the process of exploring through the darkness and atmospherically it was genuinely fantastic.
the sky islands, while repetitive after a bit, had a lot of cool puzzles. I wish there was more going on with them though, different biomes, unique animals or enemies, especially with how heavily advertised they were.

this game completely fails narratively imo though, it's desire to skirt any sort of connectivity with not just the rest of zelda but the very game it's a sequel of is genuinely disgraceful. Going through each temple only to get hit with the same exact cutscene at the end is awful, the memories being able to be seen outside of order despite them being such a linear narrative completely destroys any impact they may have. It's such a drag to be having so much fun with the game itself and then the second I do any sort of story it just makes me unhappy. People can say whatever they want about Zelda lore (doesn't make it true) but it's something I personally enjoy a lot and TotK's lack of care when it comes to it dragged down my enjoyment a lot. BotW got the same amount of flack but connecting it properly wasn't difficult at all if you actually paid any attention, but TotK, while not impossible to do so with (and potentially interesting depending on how it goes), definitely showed a lot less care in that same respect.

even beyond that though, Ganondorf, pretty much all of the races' stories beyond the Rito and maybe the Gerudo, they're all so lame.

second biggest gripe after story is the temples though. I enjoyed the Fire and Lightning temples, but the other two, especially the Water temple, didn't succeed at making a good middle ground between the open-air and more structured dungeons like the other two did for me.

the good obviously outweighs the bad with this game for me, that's why it's getting an 8, but it just didn't capture me as much as BotW did, and it didn't feel as impactful a sequel to BotW as MM did to OoT. Probably cause the game itself almost feels like it didn't WANT to be a sequel, but whatever, still a great game.

going from Ys 1 to this was a crazy ass decision on my part but don't regret it at all, such a fun game, even though all of the routes share (pretty much) the exact same map, the different movesets between each character still make it enjoyable, especially when each route never really overstays its welcome with how short they all are
really enjoyable story too, mainly character focused which I usually prefer, but the true ending sets up the backstory of Ys 1 very well
just an overall great time, simple, straight-forward good old action RPG fun

it's aight, really good atmosphere and decent dungeon crawling held back by a poor battle system and random encounters, but overall it's still a fun start to the franchise and I enjoyed my time with it
