gaemz played in 日本語
charting personal progress for self affirmation + motivation to continue my inadvisable attempt to learn this language with my tiny busted brain
only including ones I've played/comprehended a relatively useful chunk of! Cant wait 2 be able to engage with more a e s t h e t i c / challenging / region exclusive stuff but babygames and big silly jrpgs with similar vocabularies and lots of VA are currently my bread n butta

for me there's different high/low points in both! The JP VA feels a bit muted/fuzzy at times and almost like the recording quality wasn't as good. I'm so attached to the Eng VA I grew up with that moments like Yuna's sphere/the big Yunalesca "NOW IS THE TIME 2 CHOOSE" speech felt less impactful because the moments of emphasis are so different. Was really interesting to see that Lulu and Rikku sound a bit less exaggeratedly cold/bubbly in the JP version, which I wasn't expecting and makes them feel a bit more lived in. Maechen's eng VA is also 100% the winner in my book
Man I hated tidus's jp voice lol
i love eng Tidus voice so much, literally no other jrpg protagonist has the the same goofy intonation and it feels really memorable. I'm sure if the game were to come out now, when gaming VA pipelines are more industrialized, they would just give him some totally forgettable standard shonen anime cadence
I agree, he is really memorable. Outside of the shounen standard cadence, I also don't really enjoy the kind of post-troy baker style of VA found in the XIII games or in XV. I like to play those in japanese
