Replicant1737 finished Xanadu Next
Can't believe I let this one sit and collect virtual dust in my steam library for so long. It was such a charming, nostalgic and cozy experience to go through over a couple of lazy afternoons.

These sort of diamonds in the rough really reinvigorate my passion for gaming. Everything is just so neatly and for the most part well put together and then we have the added bonus of oldschool RPG look and feel that sometimes hits the spot just right.

I really enjoyed the gameplay progression here, the whole weapon proficiency mechanic with permanently unlocking different skills tied to each weapon and then choosing what you want to have equipped for both passive and active skills as well as spell slots is just brilliant, allowing to mix it up for fun or for grinding or for individual bosses and on top of that it perfectly ties in with the other systems.

I like the feel of the game overall as well. Weapon attacks and feedback upon hit is satisfying. The animations are quick, responsive and snappy, movement can feel a bit floaty at times and recovery after some weapon attacks seem a tad too long but overall it feels good to play so you won't need to adjust your tolerance for jank much. On the topic of gameplay it played well with a controller although I do recommend using a mouse for the menu's it's just more efficient that way.

Onto more negative aspects of the game. In general for me all of these things were kind of minor in the "bothering department" hence the 4 star rating. First things first those goddamn box puzzles need to chill out. I don't know if it's a sign of me loosing brain cells or patience after spending too much time on the internet but some of the later game puzzles were really tough to figure out without a guide.

The game does somewhat require a little bit of grinding for gold and exp. This one is difficult to gauge because it will depend on a player but I did find myself at points doing basically no damage to a boss but 1 level up and one weapon tier increase later we were back in business, it's kinda cool how one level up feels like it's worth a lot. In regards to gold some of the late game equipment is obscenely expensive but if you clear each room (which I would recommend doing) it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Some other minor annoyance include the aforementioned weapon recovery animation - some weapons lock you in place for a bit too long. The requirement to buy ten billion simple keys from a vendor for unlocking random doors in each dungeon is also a slight annoyance that you gonna have to deal with. Some very minor visual glitches. Oh and no voice acting but maybe that's for the better considering this is a 2005 obscure ass ARPG from Japan.

So... oh shit the story. Well that should probably tell you everything you need to know. I jest of course the story is ok a standard fantasy silent protagonist aka the chosen one saves the planet from absolute evil entity using a magic sword so what more can I say in truth there is some spice towards the end but I can't find a better word to describe it other than "default" here.

Eh how do I wrap this burrito up? Honestly it has been mostly great vibes and fun gameplay with clear and rewarding progression. I'd say give it a shot if you are in a market for some older and a little obscure RPGs to keep you occupied for a few sessions, you might uncover something special.
