The Multi-Medium
2023
Now, this is what I call art! This developer went his way to hand-paint EVERYTHING except for two of the three last worlds. It's beautiful and so very tasteful in both form and color.
It's a very straightforward puzzle platformer. There are many worlds to discover, each being set in a different dimension and each having different artistical themes from acrylic to watercolor. Each of these worlds has one or more gimmicks to spice up the puzzle platforming, with the oil pastels world having different insects you can ride to traverse the area in different ways to unlock the way toward your objective. The puzzles are very straight to the point and I can guarantee you that you'll never get stuck. It's not a mindless playthrough but one that you can make your way through without getting headaches and instead feel kinda clever. Let's not forget about the amazing soundtrack, wow.
Storywise I got reminded of Wondersong (2018) and how it played around with the theme of being the hero. Since The Multi-Medium is a 2- or so hour-long experience there isn't much to go off of, but I still think its message came across by the end, to a satisfying end at that! Play this, you who is a platformer fanatic, and a connoisseur of the arts.

An absolute masterpiece. it's possibly the best game of all time, and certainly the most important one for me. The usage of lights and shadows, of organic and technical forms, horrifying sounds, animations that can be elated or deeply indifferent, places of transit, a grand sense of scale, the most considered use of color, the different pacing of sections, the artificial mystery - all of it has never been matched by anything else, and not because everything else is bad, but NaissanceE is just so good.
One point is especially important though - while I put it on a similar level as Transistor, it has a special connection to games: It could never be anything else. Other games could be adapted to have less gameplay or even be just a movie or a book. NaissanceE has no other option but to be a game, it could not work by just describing or passively viewing an exploration of the world, as it can be seen in the often-referenced BLAME! series. And even then, it doesn't have any overt gameplay.
If you're interested in video games as an art form, playing this is mandatory. And it's incredibly exciting to see the author working on a new game...

i was starting to miss that feeling of exploration from the base game, so I was glad to see it back better than ever in this dlc.
not only is it incredibly breathtaking, it also solves some parts of the story from the main game that were left unanswered.
overall, a great experience. i cant wait to see what else mobius digital releases in the future.

God I love how people who don't like this talk about it. From the outside you'd think it was some insanely transgressive thing. Gaming's "A Serbian Film". Some real visceral reactions.
It is merely some of the best "Brain off, number go up" fun I've had in ages. At times I thought it was gonnae crash from the amount of projectiles and effects layering the screen, slowing the framerate down to the teens, which made it even funnier and added to the daft power trip. Cost me like £2 and isnae trying to rinse me of my dosh through microtransactions. I don't see the problem.
It's great fun when YOU are the bullet hell.
