My first review on Backloggd and boy. I don't think I have ever played a game I have super conflicting feelings on then Sonic Superstars. Maybe Skyward Sword rivals it upon revisiting it with an adult eyes before the hd remaster. Now, this is based on me reviewing the main story, as I have yet to play Trips story.

For one, this is the kinda classic sonic game I have been hoping for. A story with stakes that show how the zones are connected and how one connects to the next, new power ups, more original zones. That, and it has the classic sonic terrains and platforms that are based on building up momentum and speed and sonic starts off slow but slowly builds momentum and feels tight unlike with Sonic Generations. The story is great as Tripp makes a good new comer and shows sonic and friends saving tripp and making her a team member is a cool take on the friendship and comradery theme. It does it way better than Sonic Forces.

So what are my gripes with the game? Before I get to my biggest gripe of the game, here is a few tangents. For one, the music is hit or miss. Bridge island sounding like any midi composed shovel wear game with out any memorability with in its notes, and awesome big production new jack swing stuff like the carnival level. Plus, there is the issue for how they never established how they got from capital hill to cyber station in cutscenes. The game's visuals are fine, but the badniks look too cutesy for classic Sonic. They don't have that menacing edge like Mecha Sonic has. You have the first clown badnik look as non-threatening as possible lmao.

But here is my biggest probem witht he game: Its difficutly, but not in the way you think. Actually, this game is too damn easy to where it leaves a lot to be desired. Why fucking add a unlimited live system as the default game? This is classic sonic. Its interesting because the fundamentals of the game is dying and repeating the level or the entire game so your memorization skills and be challenged. Secondly, the bosses are mostly a joke.

The boss in Egg Fortress act 2 is fine, but it being the final boss? Fuck that shit. The projectiles and ai such as the missles in the first segment and the electricity circles in the second segment while you float are super easy to dodge because they move slower than you. It feels super anti-climatic. No where near the same level as Death Egg Zone, which the second segment of the boss challenges your reaction timing and your times jumps which is hard because the big beam he shoots is almost as big as the screen. It feels rewarding when you beat that boss. I can't say the same for this game.

Anyway, I give this game a rating of 6/10.
