2020

This game destroyed me completely on an emotional level, I love it.
There isn't a single character that I don't love (talking about the main group ofc). Basil my beloved, I will protect you.
An OST full of masterful pieces, beautiful visuals, great comedy, simple yet amazing combat, such a perfect plot and a stupidly gigantic attention to detail and foreshadowing, this game has it all. I can't talk about the plot because... spoilers of course. I'll just say that, by the point that the game ended, it ended my soul along with it.
Some people complain about the pacing in certain sections, and while it didn't really affect my experience, I can see where they come from. But if that is enough to bring this masterpiece of a game from a 10 to a 9, then I'm sorry to say that no game will ever be a 10.
I do not recommend you play this unless you want to spend everyday thinking about it and the depression it gave you.

This review was written before the game released

I didn't even play the demo nor the game but there is a cat

Ah yes, now I can completely repel women.
Shin Megami Tensei IV for the Citra Canary 2670 is an amazing game. It just has it all! JPGs with stats, retarded AIs, blue people that scare you more than any horror game after you whiff your attack on them, funny man Walter the fisherman, suicidal tendencies and three consecutive megidolaons given to you by fucking Beelzebub as the cherry on top. What's not to love in this?

On a more serious note, the game is actually amazing.
The plot is seriously good, the way that it shows how human nature will lead us to a loop of repeating the same mistakes over and over again is excellent, and the characters split into their own beliefs in a natural and gradual way, it's beautiful to see.

The combat system is top tier turn-based RPG. The press turns are a simple but versatile mechanic that applies to you and your enemies. In SMT IV the battles can be weirdly easy (the final bosses disappointed me severely) but that's not a major turn-off, the game still punishes you if you do something like being a disappointment to your whole family and nation by turning on auto combat when you're fighting a Girimekhala, clearly that didn't happen to me. Flynn also gets way too strong if you just throw all your stats into magic. It's an easy but really satisfying game.

The sountrack goOD LORD THE SOUNDTRACK. IT'S SO GOOD. The themes for random encounters are way too good, the fiend theme is excellent (the game's way to compensate the cancer it gave you to find the vile creature) and B2 is a classic for a reason, it makes me think twice before hanging myself after leading with walter throwing a silly little Agi to Minotaur, a boss THAT NULLS FIRE. I LOVE THIS GAME'S AI GFJIFSAFFUCKTHTISTUFKCINGGAME

The designs are top notch. I love that SMT has a lot of not conventional designs to represent various mythological beings, beliefs and ideas (not chemtrail). While some are horrendous misses (looking at you Lucifer), most are absolute bangers (Beelzebub, Parvati, Shiva, Metatron, etc.)

The presentation, while being limited do to the console it's in, is also top notch. The 3D environments really sell you on the state that the world you live in is, specially the blue men that give me severe PTSD.
When you enter a battle, you get another presentation, now the enemies are little sprites with idle animations that are really charming, and while the death animations are bugged while emulating, they're still pleasing to look at. The UI is also really well thought out for the console the game was in, porting it to another system will prove difficult but that doesn't affect my judgement.

This is a SMT game, so SMT bullshit will happen, but you can have a good laugh (or a gunshot directly to your skull) when it happens. A very good and unique experience, highly recommend it.

Please ATLUS port this to PC

I prefer this over the original game. I'm not being ironic

I find it amazing how even after the additions that came with the following games, all of them still fall short in comparison to the very first one.
This one has it all, an amazing soundtrack full of bangers (Heat to be filled with, All for one and Dead end are good examples), excellent voice acting, both in japanese and in english (well, Puru's is not always the best, but Kamille's, Jerid's, Scirocco's and Domon's are extremely good), beautiful maps (like the Mausoleum or the Satellite Elevator) and a fun combat system that isn't too fast, nor too slow.
The Official Mode is good and has various iconic battles from the original Gundam trilogy (the A Baoa Qu battle always left an impact in me) and the Original Mode... well..
It's simply amazing, a bunch of teams consisted of various characters from different Gundam animes. Good missions with great battles and fun and sometimes even emotional interactions. There isn't a single bad team in the game, but the best one is easily Domon's, consisting of Domon Kasshu, Milliardo Peacecraft and Elpeo Puru, it has the best moments, best battles and best interactions.
The only real complaint I have with this game is the outdated cutscenes (but that is more a product of aging than anything else) and the relatively short cast.
Unfortunately, the games with a bigger cast fuck it up. DWG2's battles consist of an RNG fest with few good moments, DWGR is also fun but it doesn't have the same charm, and I haven't had the chance to play DWG3.
This game was my childhood and it still holds up.

Now that I've finished all that is currently available, I can confidently say that this is nothing less than a masterpiece and one of the best games I've ever played, no I'm not exaggerating.
The foreshadowing present from the start, the characters, the plot, the backstories, almost everything is perfect here.
This game broke me in a way that nothing else ever did and I completely love it
I really don't know how they will keep up the quality of the writing for 3 more routes but honestly, I can't wait for it.

This game aged like milk. It's incredible how bad it controls nowadays.
The music is really good, probably the only reason why I didn't give this game an even lower rating.
The level design is literally a hit or miss, you can have a good level, but you can also have an extremely boring and/or unfair one.
The camera is shit, everyone knows this, moving on.
To put it bluntly, the most overrated game I have ever seen.

The game is overall pretty shit, but the mission where you have to destroy the chaos shitheads broke me.

Roberto, Kyoko and Hideo can kiss my ass

It has an interesting idea. The game itself is barely playable.

I don't care if all of you fuckers have a hate boner for this game, it's good as fuck. Roster's not the best, the story is.. well.. a fighting game story, the graphics are not bad and the combat is nothing less than fucking incredible, one of my favourite combat systems in any fighting game. suck my ass fighterz

A similar situation with marvel vs capcom infinite, y'all have a hate boner, calm down
