Great worldbuilding and characters- terrible everything else. This game is not fun.

completely unplayable mess with horrendous platforming, a required combo trial that requires frame perfect inputs otherwise you can't beat it because they just straight up didn't give you enough time to do it like a normal person

i had enough when the game told me to do a Super Sonic boss rush with no ring refills that is practically impossible to complete because the game fixes your stats to the lowest level for it

i loved the base game but this is just embarrassing this NEEDS to be patched

EDIT: finished the dlc its still a steaming pile of dogshit but they made the final boss better its pretty fun when you aren't dealing with the worst camera in video game history

Ok well now that the main story is done it's time for a REAL review. Unfortunately, regrettably, and even tragically, this game was not the best game ever made. It wasn't even in the top 20 best games ever made and I can't even say top 25 or top 28.

There's a lot of very nice looking planets and areas. But the biggest most shocking moment about this game is that there is a whole lot of NOTHING on them. It's very sad because the planets look really nice but unless you like walking into empty caves or running into the same outposts and labs there's nothing to do but take in the scenery. It is very good scenery but Im playing a game not an interactive documentary come on Bethesda Western Game Studio.

The characters are pretty boring. I can count on one hand the amount of characters I thought were fun or interesting to talk to. The smuggler who took one of the Artifacts in his big ship full of treasures is fun, Vasco is the undisputed Greatest Of All Time, and the Adoring Fan is incredibly funny. Otherwise they're just people, and theres not a lot of interesting or memorable traits about them. This might change with side quests though so we'll see if they're hiding any intriguing and life changing characters.

Main story was alright but the latter half is definitely much better. For most of it it's a repetitive journey of finding Artifacts in the same caves surrounded by evil aliens or pirates, but a few times it was pretty unique. The collector ship was fun and the whole shifting lab was awesome and the highlight of the game. The final battle is pretty cool too and I think the ending is interesting as well without going into detail. Finding powers sucks though cause its all the same walking to the temple for 5 minutes doing the flying into shapes thing and getting the power.

As an RPG Im gonna use the word alright again cause it really is alright. The character customization is pretty good and I like the different skills, but its really just a lot of "you're better at doing this now by 10%" rather than actually gaining new abilities or bonuses to your character. I also wish there were more interesting traits because theres a good chunk that are just "youre a part of this group". Theres good stuff like your parents or the Adoring Fan or having a house but not really many silly ones that made gameplay more interesting like in Fallout. They should've had a Wild Wasteland or Jinxed equivalent if you ask me. I'm glad that certain skills and backgrounds play a part in dialogue choices but I don't see it that often. Once more I have to say maybe in the side quests we'll see if this changes.

The main group Constellation is quite boring and it's worse because the game forces them on you. You have to join their group, you have to participate in the meetings, you have to feel sad if something tragic and drastic happens to one of the members, you have to have them as companions when you go somewhere. I think it would have been a lot cooler if you could start your Artifact search solo and pick a faction to allign with if you wanted, Constellation being one of the possible choices of many.

Gameplay is pretty good though. Gunplay works well enough and there's a lot of varied weapons to toy with. The physics engine is very silly, and the space powers are awesome, especially anti-gravity. Personally I shot people in the face with a shotgun or beat them up unarmed.

Ship combat is okay but it serves its purpose well enough. The travel is really annoying when you're going to a new place but at least you can instantly fast travel if you go to a place you've been before. I dont care about outposts or crafting I never did that dumb crap

In conclusion it appears this game might actually have been one of the worst games ever made looking back on it, but I had a lot of fun and good times so I will give it 4 stars. I did very very little side content so If it is really good maybe Ill bump it up but only time will tell. Have a great day Todd and to you as well.

Hard to put into words how incredible this game is from start to finish. I had extremely high hopes going in and I was not disappointed in the slightest. I’m not able to put my thoughts here into some longwinded overly pretentious review, so I’ll say this.

If you have the means to play this on PS5, do it. If you have the money to get a PS5 and this game, you will not regret it.

Otherwise if Square can pull their finger out their arse and create an optimised PC port, wait for that and prepare yourself for one of the greatest games of all time.

Ganondorf has taken over hyrule its time to unleash the Cockmobile

It’s the biggest piece of dogshit

This game sucks.

Super Paper Mario is not only the worst game in the Mario franchise, it is a strong contender for the worst game in Nintendo's history. Every single aspect of this game is bad from its lacklustre gameplay, to it's badly implemented partner system and a story so incredibly edgy it makes YIIK look like The Godfather.

The entire time during the game I can never tell if it wants me to play an RPG or a platformer, it spans across both genres and fails miserably at both. Because the whole unique shtick with this one that separates it from the other games in the series is that you can.... play the game in 3D. Is this a fun mechanic? No. It's absolutely terrible and makes it pointless to play as any character other than Mario when traversing through the overworld, which by the way has some of the most uncreative and ugly looking NPCs and enemy designs in any Mario game.

Mario does nothing in this game, he literally just walks around and doesn't have any funny interactions like in Paper Mario 64, the protagonist of this game is Tippi. A butterfly who got sent to The Flipside dimension by the father of Count Bleck, the game's main villain. Bleck wants to destroy the worlds after he lost his Tippi because the son of a cult leader can never find true love... WOW. Incredible message game! Where'd you steal that from? The Phantom of the Opera? But noooo that story wasn't edgy was it? So lets just add in this magical tome call The Dark Prognosticous to make this game's story seem mature than it is. GARBAGE

Any when Bleck is done having his little Kylo Ren tantrum he unleashes the chaos heart to desroy all the worlds, including The Mushroom Kingdom so Mario has to go around dimension hopping so other characters can complete his quest for him. Oh and btw Luigi is evil, because I guess that helps with his character development?

'Are any of these dimesnions worth saving' you might ask and the answer to that is NO. The only one thats actually unique or interesting is the one that actually gets destroyed in the main story that has these awesome little samurai dudes, easily the best part of the game.

If you noticed by now I'm only ragging on this games terrible fanfiction-tier story its because the gameplay has NOTHING noteworthy to mention. Theres this retro 8-bit powerup that has a funny interaction with a Koopa Troopa in World 3 but thats the only entertaining this game does, the boss fights are the easiest of any mario game, the final boss of the game is the easiest one and every enemy is defeated almost exactly the same (You just use Bowser's fire)

The partners are nearly all USELESS apart from the one you get for beating the games post game pit of 100 trials and you know why? Because it actually helps you speed up with this god awful game and help you beat it faster so you can put it back in the box and never touch it again. And this game can be SLOW at times, if not for some unfunny meta humour NPC making you do some dumb quest then definitely some of the level design taking you on literal railroads for 15-20 seconds to sell the "WOAH THIS GAME IS ACTUALLY PAPER" aesthetic, something that the previous game on the GameCube did way too much and something this game does equally as often to absolutely zero laughs or smiles at the quirkiness.

World 1 is bad - You go through this desert and it mostly serves as an introduction to a minor villain in O'chunks who is Bowser's rival

World 2 is actually good - The villain in this one turns into a giant spider and chases you down like Resident Evil 3, the only actual challenging part of the game

World 3 is awful - The meta humour is on point with Bowser being a painfully unfunny joke and the villain is some nerd who kidnaps Tippi because he likes Funko Pops

World 4 is so bad I can't put it into words - The level design is utterly atrocious

I don't remember World 5

Haha I love the little Samurai Dudes!

World 7 is bad - You get Luigi back but its too late in the game for him to do anything actually meaningful

World 8 is also bad - Everywhere looks the exact same because the castle has 1 aesthetic which is black with white outlines, and this game expects you to find gaps in 3D when it looks like this.

I hope after you read this review and if you're on the fence about playing this game that you take the following advice:

Don't.This game sucks.
