20 Games I Think Everyone Should Try

There are games I love that I would tepidly recommend, then there are these games that I will endlessly recommend. Everyone should at least try these once. Possibly twice.

Suikoden II
Suikoden II
I feel like this is that JRPG everyone says is good but still not that many people play, or just choose not to because it "seems" overrated at this point. Or it's just not easy to play legally, which is fair. Buy the remasters whenever they come out. I love the first game too, but giving II a pass might be your biggest regret in your entire life. lol hyperbole is fun. Your biggest regret should probably be not spending enough time with loved ones during this very short existence, but whatever

Seeing some Suikoden II hate lately so it bothers me. But play the game, then give your opinion please.
Soul Blazer
Soul Blazer
It's a very simple action rpg, but the incremental town rebuilding really feels rewarding. Only other games that give even slightly the same feel are ActRaiser, and Dark Cloud 1/2.
Sanitarium
Sanitarium
Let's just say the overall plot gets a bit goofy, but the various vignettes almost feel like episodes of Star Trek: TOS or Twilight Zone. It has gorgeous prerendered graphics and every character you meet is worth meeting.
Anodyne 2: Return to Dust
Anodyne 2: Return to Dust
I think my review describing this as a "spiritual experience" is pretty apt. It manages to be an art game, but also a GAME game. It's made by two people that clearly love the medium.
Tomba!
Tomba!
There's no other game like Tomba/Tombi except for its sequel. If you don't like it it's not your thing, but it's worth trying to find out if it is. Very much so.
Gitaroo Man
Gitaroo Man
My quintessential rhythm/action game. Um Jammer Lammy is a close second.
Zero Escape: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
Zero Escape: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
I'm not a big VN person, but this has a similar set up to say something like the SAW movies, but it's written very well. Very good characters and a pretty mindf$%#-y story. I would also recommend Trace Memory and Hotel Dusk as well as Zero Escape, but this is my favorite in that adventure/story-driven niche for the NDS.
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Shin Megami Tensei IV
I love the mainline series to bits and I feel like this is the most accessible. All the other games can be ridiculously hard, but maybe also try SMT III based on vibes alone, it's an amazing experience.
Kirby Super Star
Kirby Super Star
Not only is this an amazing feeling platformer, but it has so many different takes on the core gameplay that I think you'll at least love one of the smaller games within this.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Whether you like Tactics JRPGs or not, Three Houses has an amazing branching story with amazing characters that you genuinely care about. If you're not a fan of the series, this one is worth a playthrough regardless.
Azure Dreams
Azure Dreams
Mystery dungeon, monster taming, town building, dating sim. It's all wrapped up in a very charming package, with great music and a cool visual style.
Secret of Evermore
Secret of Evermore
I prefer it to Mana by a slightly large margin. The story is just more fun, so many interesting locales to explore, etc.
Pikmin
Pikmin
Every other game in the series is questionable (albeit I adore 4) but just play it, it might only take a handful of sessions to get through, but I think it will determine whether you're a fan or not.
Age of Empires IV
Age of Empires IV
Maybe not underappreciated but I don't hear enough praise for the series. Basically an updated version of II (which is also fair game) but I think this is a good determination of whether you'll like RTS games or not.
Ico
Ico
Absolutely beautiful experience. Gets a bit overshadowed by the Colossus game understandably, but it's just as good in a different way.
Jumping Flash!
Jumping Flash!
Once again, I wish we had more games with the same feel as this but there's only one sequel.
Arc the Lad II
Arc the Lad II
Wonderful characters, amazing 2D graphics and a very engaging story. If you're a Tactics fan this is one of the best.
Kagero: Deception II
Kagero: Deception II
III is also solid, but trap simulation rpg. Just play it, see if it's your thing. Very cool concept and I think this is the best of the series probably.
Alundra
Alundra
Basically if A Link to the Past was a bit darker and more adult. The closest we ever came, or probably ever will come, to a Zelda killer. If you're a Zelda fan, this is essential.
Shadow Tower: Abyss
Shadow Tower: Abyss
I feel like this is the best of all the King's Field/Shadow Tower games. Eternal Ring close second (probably the most accessible)

Jumping Flash is a treasure....have you tried Robbit mon Dieu by chance? I haven't gotten around to it yet since it's still JP only atm.

Love that you also love Kagero Deception II, always enjoy any game where one of my methods of attack is dropping shit on people's heads. One day I'll finally boot up my Steam copy of AoE4 after all that AoE2 spamming!

i love that little eclipse of technological advancement and creative freedom that let nintendo output a few actually kind of weird, artsy video games in the late n64/early gamecube era. like if somebody told me pikmin 1 was ghost-developed by a team of ex-love-de-lic devs, i'd almost believe them. happy to see the game getting more appreciation in recent years after it blew my stupid child brain away a couple decades ago

also def been meaning to check out shadow tower abyss, the first time i saw a screenshot of that game and there was just a real ass gun in the middle of some king's field ass level i knew i needed to play it

@Vee ive tried to play robbit mon dieu a few times but cant get the rom to work. im going to retry sometime.

aoe4 is solid, might be blasphemy but it's replaced 2 for me. it also has more of a documentary approach with its story mode, which is cool bc i know they were trying to be more historically accurate.

@theia love pikmin 1 so much, just too short, but its a joy to go back to every few years. definitely give abyss a go when you can, it does everything well with the formula but manages to do other things too
@fntm If you have a PS3 (or any Playstation past 3 iirc), there's a process where you can create a Japanese PSN account and get access to the Japanese Playstation Store. They have their own version of a 'virtual console', with like at least 200 PS1 games. They have Robbit mon Dieu, they even have Kowloon's Gate and such. A lot of good titles, so I recommend it if you wanna experience obscure PS1 games on semi-original hardware. It's not free though, each game is like 700 yen (which is like 5 dollars).

Anyway, great list, I love that you included some games that aren't typically recommended. You didn't shy away from hard games either, props for that. Pikmin is 100% the game I think everyone should play as well.
