The highest highs and the lowest lows I've ever seen in a game. The action sequences/Eikon fights are absurd, high-flying, incredible fun (albeit a little bit easy). The base combat is great and the occasional unlocking of new ability sets keeps it fresh enough.
How anybody play-tested this and thought the quest design was okay is absolutely beyond imagination. Nearly every single side quest is absolute meaningless drudgery. Even the main quest is filled with donkey-work. There are an endless number of fetch quests and "talk to 3 people" interrogative quests and lots of back-and-forth chatter for no real reward. Clive, who is stronger than a god for much of this game, is literally sent out on quests to pick flowers multiple times. It completely demolishes the pace of the game and soils most positive memories I have of it.

Final Fantasy VII

pros:
- the combat is insanely addictive, learning and finding new ways to defeat enemies (especially on hard mode) is very satisfying and rewarding
- the soundtrack is phenomenal, hard to believe they surpassed FFVII Remake's OST but wow, so many bangers
- character writing is fantastic, barret in particular is a real standout, as well as cloud + tifa's relationship
- story overall is great
- large majority of minigames are super fun
- side quests have vastly improved
cons:
- some minigames don't really hit (looking at you gears and gambits) and provide more frustration than enjoyment
- most of the open world stuff (not side quests!) get pretty boring towards the end of the game
in short, this game is a masterpiece. an easy GOTY for a new all time favorite for me. no doubt that FFVII part 3 is my most anticipated game now, and when it's all said and done, the FFVII trilogy will go down as a monumental moment in history.

Damn, this is actually amazing. The main story of the game is absolutely amazing, making my jaw drop a lot of times. Another thing that amazes me is the open world aspect of the game and the world intel mechanic is incredible. The only thing that i didnt enjoy that much were the side quests because some of them didnt have good storys behind them or they were just simply boring.
In general i love this game and its probably one of my favorites all time.

This one feels very undercooked and rushed.
Combat is amazing but gets repetitive due to the lack of enemy variety, feels like I'm always killing harpies and goblins every 2 minutes. Also you outlevel enemies way too fast, so any sort of challenge is lost early on in the game.
Side quests are poorly structured, they never tell an interesting story and never give meaningful rewards, so you just forget about them.
But the biggest offender here is the main quest, one of the worst I've ever played in a RPG. Nothing really happens in the main story, its always building up to something big and then it abruptly ends with no conclusion to anything.
It's probably going to get better with a "Dark Arisen" type of expansion later on. But right now, this isn't worthy of your time.
