The prospect of a Studio Ghibli RPG had me salivating at the mouth over a decade ago. Once I got my hands on the game though, the amazing music and art style succumbed to the inscrutable combat system and fetch quests. Like many other games, I fell off this one.

For whatever reason, I decided to pick it back up on the Switch. I think the promise of a 35 hour JRPG was tantalizing. I’ve found myself appreciating this game a lot more once I understood how the what rules dictate your AI companions (thanks reddit) and stopped getting bogged down in side quests. What I found was something really special. A game where your superpower is your heart and anyone can be forgiven for the awful things they've done as long as they are remorseful.

I went in excited about playing a different kind of story-based game and found something that had something really special. Unfortunately, it also suffers from overstaying its welcome, annoying stealth sections and a lot of other issues that feel very at home in the PS3 era.

Simultaneously way too talky and handholdy while also having completely opaque puzzles and gates to block your progress.
