The Kingdom Hearts series has been narratively deteriorating for the past few decades now, but this game was the final nail in the coffin for me. What I loved most about this series was the great fun they had with Disney and how they integrated it into the plot. My favorite aspect were the boss battles with Disney villains.

The series took the wonderful simplicity of the first game- a boy going through Disney worlds to find his two friends- and perverted it to no length. KH3 is the culmination of all of the perversion this series has gone through.

The worlds are expanded, but not in any interesting way. Instead of seeing more of the iconic areas from Disney movies, KH3 instead chooses to take out additional worlds so that we can see more generic rock, grass, ice, etc. Additionally, Disney means very little to the plot- they're simply backdrops for re-enacting the original movies for no discernable reason. Disney characters are hardly ever bosses, even when the narrative sets them up to be. We instead get bait and switches where we have to fight more giant heartless instead. What's more, the Organization and other weeby OCs that I didn't enjoy have taken the entire narrative space of the series and turned it into something that is a shell of its original concept.

Gameplay is fine- there are moments I definitely enjoyed- but I'll be honest, after slogging through Monstropolis, I put the game away and then sold it sometime later.

I picked this one up for the first time with the brand new compilation on Switch and was really excited for this one. But I think the passage of time mixed with Odyssey-like expectations really soiled this one for me. The controls are infuriating, to the point that the game is, frankly, nearly unplayable for me.
