People will tell you this game is revolutionary but will never elaborate on it, and if they do they'll mention stuff Half Life 1 already did or some vague statements like "you had to be there".

Damn
i mean it kinda was revolutionary in its use of physics, though.

Havok was already used by some games before HL2 and gimmicky physics puzzles are hardly revolutionary.
i dont think you're giving credit where it's due, it was far ahead of its contemporaries in terms of being able to interact with the environment. it wasn't just the puzzles, it was the joy of messing around with objects that had actual physical properties in game rather than just being set dressing, and being able to use them as weapons etc. it absolutely popularised the trend of physics in games too.

Yeah no the physics stuff in Half-Life 2 set off an industry wide fad that lasted for years, sorry you don't like the game but that did actually happen

Deus Ex Invisible War had this kind of interactivity with props before HL2, the only difference is that HL2 showcased it more with their dumb prop puzzles and the gravity gun. HL2 used some cool tech but trying to claim it invented it is stupid.

Also I don't hate HL2, but I think it's worse than HL1, and for a game that Changed Gaming Forever its influence lies in Doom 3 and probably some other games i don't remember trying to ape the gravity gun.

Nobody is saying Half-Life 2 "invented" physics in 2004. Gears of War also didn't "invent" cover shooting but it's universally recognized as popularizing it.
Anyone in this comment section ever seen Goodbye Dragon Inn, fantastic movie I highly recommend it

I've been rewatching Akagi again it's cool I like it
I need to watch that at some point, heard good things about FKMT in general really but I'm a little more interested in Shinobu Kaitani works such as One Outs and Liar Game.

FKMT can have some pacing issues but overall I really like his work. Kaiji, Akagi/Ten and Strongest Man Kurosawa are good reads

Find it funny how a month ago there was a genuine discussion about HL2 did to expand and perhaps did something to the gaming sphere to you getting hit w/ the "yea well you gave [UNRELATED AND DIFFERENT GAME] a score I didn't like so what do you know!!!!!" BS

To be fair my take sounds kinda provocatory so I get why some might react like that lol

thank you snack
i don't think it's revolutionary but there's no shooter from before this game that really has this kind of atmosphere, as far as i've seen.
