this game is 15 dollars

15 bucks
15 smackaroos
1500 cents

and id gladly pay four times that for this mastapiece

This might be the only game I've completed 100%, or even 112%. Such a good game. I think the only flaw I could find in it is that it's hard to get into at first, but once you get power-ups such as the dash and the mantis claw it becomes much more fully realized, and from there the map continues to unfold far beyond what most people expect. The bosses are sublime, really playing on how responsive the Knight's combat is. The Knight's movement abilities are also used to their fullest in the parkour challenges, which are difficult but fair. The music is atmospheric, the art is gorgeous, and the story is surprisingly gripping. Eagerly awaiting Silksong.

After years of DVince89 yelling at me to play all the way through this game I finally sat down and did the damn thing, and I’m very glad I did.

I started Hollow Knight 3 times before this, but the slow start and the seemingly aimless direction always got to me. Not that the game is poorly paced or that having no story direction during the first few hours is a bad thing, just wasn’t something that made me want to keep playing back then.

Once you get a few movement upgrades/charms the game really starts to pick up pace, and your are running around from room to room within seconds. The movement is amazing in this game and it’s so much fun to challenge yourself with some of the puzzles/rooms.

The obvious star of the show are the many, many boss fights. Honestly I didn’t care for the first few, and then I fought the Mantis Lords and, outside of a few, they just kept getting better and more fun.

The one thing that sets this game back a half star is that for the story receiving so much critical praise and hype it was just solid. Nothing that made me gasp or freak out over. And I think a lot of that has to do with how little of the actual story you learn until the end. For like 80 percent of the game you have very little idea of what is actually going on. If DVince89 didn’t tell me to be very deliberate with finding story details I probably would’ve passed a lot of it by.

All that being said this is a master class in gaming, especially from a Indie studio. There is so much to love and gameplay wise it is absolutely flawless. And if there wasn’t enough content in the base game(trust me, there is) the DLC adds hours and hours of replayability to test your skills.

I am very much looking forward to seeing more about SilkSong in the near future!

I absolutely adore this game. From the soundtrack to the vivid environments and character design. The game handles very well and can be punishing at times but the feeling of reward once beating a difficult boss cannot be beaten.
I could play this game over and over again and I do regularly.

I hate platformers and I'm not a big fan of the metroidvania genre.
Loved this game anyway.

Really fell in love with this game far more than I was expecting to. It has an amazing atmosphere and gorgeous colour palette, lots of dim blues and greens, beautifully lit. I loved how much freedom it gives you to explore, how it buries away secrets and encourages you to find them. There’s a great balance between how cute and funny the characters can be, and how dark and dangerous the setting and plot is. Straight away I fell in love with the Knight, the grubs, Hornet, Greenpath and the City of Tears, and knew I wanted to see more.

The soundtrack took me by surprise with how beautiful and melancholic it is. It adds to the atmosphere and adds to the identity of each area. There’s a great mix of areas that feel like the heart of civilisation, to wilder gardens and further reaches, to others feeling very mysterious and dangerous. The controls also feel superb too. The jumps, dashes, wall climbing, pogo-ing with your nail, it’s all introduced very well until the point it became second nature. It has a bug-like springiness to it, giving you both a sense of overcoming great odds, but also feeling a growing sense of power and expertise in your own character and abilities. I was also impressed by the upgrade charms, which all felt distinct, worthwhile, and fun to experiment with.

This game is BIG, especially if you delve into the optional stuff, which I did after I beat the story. I’ve still got some to do, which I’ll pick up as and when I feel like it. But I’ve done a lot of it and have beaten the Radiance, which felt like a good cut off point. I’m sad that there’s not really much more for me to discover, as that aspect of the game is second to none, but it’s still a lot of fun to jump into and try to beat a challenge. Really I just want to keep playing it, and like many people I will now be waiting eagerly for Silksong to arrive. No pressure!

the game was very difficult, for me, just because I never really played a platformer or a metroidvenia in years at the time I picked up this game, but am I glad I picked it up, I would say more but there isn't anything that I can say about the game that wasn't already said, just go and play it.

This game is beautiful, there's no other way to describe it. It's hauntingly beautiful, as any good post apocalyptic world should be. The controls are tight and the stages challenging, but in the way that when you die, its your fault... and also your job to learn from that mistake or continue to die over and over... and over. I spent so many hours trying to 100% it, but there were somethings I just couldn't do.

The only negative is that the story isn't super obvious, and that's a shame! I wanted to know the story, but I didn't want to hunt it down by the time I realized i had missed it. Fantastic game for any platformer fan!

Got bored like half way through and stopped playing. Not for me.

Overall, Hollow Knight is a near perfect game. Unfortunately, the game's weakest point is in the first few hours of gameplay. Many people will never get to appreciate the experience this game provides because of the frustration of not knowing where to find a map, where you are on that map once you find it, or where to go next. Even those points aren't particularly "weak", but once you get used to the systems that the game provides, the game becomes legendary.

This is my favourite game of all time. I have never played something that motivated and delighted me at the same time like this game. Everything about Hollow Knight is perfect.

The soundtrack, the gameplay, the level design, the boss design, the skills, the long term motivation, the urge to perfection... This game offers everything and I am honest...

The only game that could top this one is Hollow Knight 2. Will it be able to do that? Most likely it won't, because what Hollow Knight gave me has never been given me by anything else. No, not even hookers. ♥

Masterful metroidvania with gorgeous art that has an impeccable atmosphere and gameplay loop. This is an absolute must play, ESPECIALLY if you are a fan of the genre. Abilities and traversal are super fun and rewarding once you get them all as well. They really nailed all the boss fights and this game has some of my favorites in any game. And my god the soundtrack is fantastic. The reputation this game has as being insanely hard I didn't understand though. There are some DLC parts I have not played, but the base game there were hardly anything that reached Souls-like or shmup levels of difficult imo. I also did get lost quite often which kind of bogged down the flow and my experience with the game a bit as I was finding myself backtracking a lot. This is definitely my only major gripe. Also, prior to you getting all of your abilities, the movement and combat is hardly the best the genre has to offer. This game is absolutely fantastic but I feel like it was missing some magical element to make it five stars, but it's damn near close. The lore is very fascinating and is worth exploring in and of itself. I also don't find this to be that replayable to be honest, but that maybe just is because it's fairly long. Overall, this is a phenomenal game and I really cant wait for Silksong! 4 1/2 ★

I was initially not too fond of hollow knight as the gameplay looked rather simplistic and I am not a big fan of the art style in it. After a couple of years of pestering from freinds and family I begrudingly decided to give it a shot since I had a free copy due to playstation plus a couple of years ago.

The initial few hours I held my same opening opinion, I really didn't understand what people saw in this game at all. After a while though the craftsminship of the world and level design started to sink in. The world of Hollow Knight is huge and it is extremely easy to get lost in it.

Everytime I hit a new area I would open open another dozen routes to explore. At times I had one objective but seeminly I would get distracted and end up exploring somewhere else and several hours later still haven't completed that first objective. It's always like I gotta find the cartographer now, oh wait a new item shop, oh wait I only need a few more geo's to buy this, oh wait I know where this item goes, oh wait I found a secret path oh wait oh wait oh wait. I really grew to like the openendness of the level design. There are difned paths you need to take to get to the endgame but going straight there would be a fools erand. It's all about getting stronger and preparing yourself and perfecting your build. Then you get the completionist bug and try to max your health and magic, get all the charms and so forth. Exploration gives more rewards than anything else in the game.

The common fodder enemies scatered around the map are easy enough to dispatch for sure but they do make you stop and think what you are doing instead of mindlessly rushing through an area. Plus there are many reasons to fight them as well.

The bosses are a real stand out though. Most of them might not be OMG the best boss fights ever. However they are all very well constructed and thought out meticulously. Their is some good craft to their gameplay for the most part. Nightmare Grimm was a real highlight.

The story and lore aspect is really deep from what the internet has told me but honestly just playing through the game and 100%ing the game I feel like I got about 75% of it through random lore texts and optional speech bubbles. I'm at the very least interested now in going online and looking at a more deeper analisis, so take that for what you will.

The things I did not like are the artstyle. I know it's praised for it but if im being honest playing the game did not change my mind on it. A lot of the areas also feel real samey. The music to me while not bad is just kinda there. There are a couple of tracks that I can think of but like the save room theme or the grimm fight music but most didn't leave an impression on me. I really didn't care for the mechanic of hitting enemies pushing you back. I felt this was more annoying than anything, just makes the game feel sluggish. Also I would have liked a bit faster or longer dash. Getting around areas can take awhile especially if your running through them for the hundreth time. I know there are charms to get rid of these things but it's wasteful to use them on such minor things that should be there already. Speaking of travel I wish there were a few more fast travel spots in the world. There are times when you have to travel past three huge open areas to get to where your going and it feels needless. Or have them in better locations. Places like the battle colussium would have been real nice to have one near. I know you can create a custom fast travel in late game but I don't think it remove the issue as you can only make one at a time and you are kinda encouraged to not use them if you are trying to collect essence. The last thing that is complete and utter bullisht, maybe the most bullshit thing I've ever seen in a game is the pantheon's. I'm all for boss rushes but these are just a dumb long grind of fighting the same bosses over and over again, ones at by this time you have fought several times over already. Tieing this to trophies is dumb. Fight 10 bosses in a row while we throw a new one at you, that you can't possibly hope to win on the first several times then to top it all off go through all of the bosses. There's rewarding difficulty and then there's maschosism

In conclusion if you like metroidvania's that really encourage deep exploration and open ended gameplay with some well designed bosses I'd suggest giving Hollow Knight a try. Even if it takes a few years of convincing :)

Platinum #145

It's pretty much the best video game ever made

Um dos jogos mais importantes dos últimos anos que vai mudar o jeito que metroidvanias são feitos. Eu gostei MUITO dele e apesar de achar o combate um pouco limitado, ainda o considero uma OBRA PRIMA!!

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a truly incredible game! I haven't played a good Metroidvania game since Super Metroid, and even SM didn't hold up the stand of time (at least in my opinion). Hollow Knight was incredible from the first to the last moment. The art style was stunning, the music was top notch, the character and world design were perfect, but most importantly the game was a ton of fun to play. Definitely one of the best games I have ever played in my life, and easily the best indie game I have ever played. Will definitely be revisiting this one at some point in the future.

One of those rare games where I don’t know if I’d change anything. It’s so impressive how intricate the map is and how great the bosses are. The animations are gorgeous. Just immaculate

Funny bug game :3
This game just feels so good to play. The controls and combat are both so tight, the world and characters are memorable and lovable. Plus, the bosses are satisfyingly difficult to beat. Still working on the pantheons though.

One of the few games I'm glad I went for platinum, or else the score would have been slightly lower. The game gets better and more challenging bit by bit, there isn't really a part where I can say "This game starts for real here", no, progression is smooth, and there isn't a difficult spike unless you explore the areas out of order. I thought the difficulty was overrated and it kinda is, it feels slightly above average for the most part (since you also get better bit by bit), but as I said, it gets harder and better over time, and when you get closer and closer to the end or even better, closer to getting the Platinum/all achievements/100%/whatever, oh boy... You're gonna have your ass kicked in a good way. Absolute greatness.
