Remember Mega Man 2?

A game too nostalgic for its own good, Mega Man 9 tested the waters to see if anyone was interested in a new Mega Man game after a while. It was also seemingly made for those Mega Man fans who had played so much Mega Man that the previous 8 games were Too Easy. I'm not sure if they wanted people to jump right into 9 as their first Mega Man or they wanted them to go back to the first one, but considering how bare bones this game is, it's a strange approach no matter what.

Mega Man 9, in an attempt to be like only a quarter of its past, removes Mega Man's ability to slide or charge his buster (two things i'm very fond of doing in a Mega Man game). This makes traversal and combat a more pure and challenging experience, but also, potentially, a pretty limited one. Your jumps have to be Perfect.

Your movement is not entirely limited though. While a whole lot more clumsy and scarce than the Mega Ball, the Concrete Shot allows you to scale walls and quickly jump off of frozen enemies, and the game demands you use it in some pretty creative ways. I love the Concrete Shot, i would love to have infinite ammo for it. Speaking of ammo, Magma Man has more health points than you have ammo for Tornado Blow, his weakness. What were they thinking.

I have beaten Mega Man 9 twice and hated it the first time because i was young and dumb. The second time, as a wizened sage, I appreciate it so much more. It's a decent time that rewards a really (emphasis on really) skilled player. There are better Mega Man games out there.

I can really only recommend Mega Man 9 for people who like Mega Man and have played the previous games in the series, and know full well 9 takes all your toys away and still expects you to play.

yes yes, Splash Woman is cute.

Many would say Mega Man 9 is a return to form after the first SNES entry with 7 and the wildly unpopular 8. The gap from 8 to 9 is pretty big at 12 years and Inti Creates manages to make a homage to the NES style of Mega Man (specifically 2) that works well with consoles from 2 generations ago but manages to bring back the old pains of the NES games with it.

I can safely say Mega Man 9 has the best tight control and feel of any NES Mega Man game, there's little or completely no lag to movement. The weapons here are easily the best of the NES here with every weapon fulfilling a niche well to a degree other than the Concrete Shot which was used for the bosh rush and occasional stage hazards. Also felt the music here had a lot more going on with Galaxy Man's stage track just being a bop.

With that said, reverting to the NES style of Mega Man was cool but I felt like they took it a bit too far here. The removal of charge shot and slide were mechanics I enjoyed and made certain boss fights more mechanically engaging than just jumping at the right time. Not to mention the abundance of spikes compared to the past entries with some NES titles included made for much more challenging and tricky jumps than before. This game is notorious for its difficulty and it shows. Much less room for mistakes here.

Despite the grievances I have with the game, mostly in terms of the difficulty and removal of gameplay mechanics from the previous titles. This game does manage to bring back some of the classic gameplay that fans of 2 might enjoy and all in all a very solid title. I can see why people why adore this one a lot.

My buddy from High School is a huge Mega Man fan, and I decided to check out the series after recommending it to me. It's a fun series, even though the games can be a bit difficult and fun. While MM1 is hard, MM9 is on the same level since it goes back to its OG MM roots. There are traps during stages that are murder, and some features in the previous MM games are removed which is a bit mixed for me. But overall, this was fun despite how difficult it was.

Replayed this one and resisted the temptation of using the Collection's additional save features. I took on this challenge raw!

So what do I think of the game? Mega Man 9 is the best version of this expression of retro-styled Mega Man. The levels are tight and interesting. The boss weapons are unique and multi-faceted (got a lot of use out of each). The boss fights themselves are challenging but satisfying to master. The shop feature is appreciated and useful although I wish the text was sped up.

The Wily Stages might be a titch too hard but they're still pretty good although I have my complaints for the banality of the first Wily Stage boss and Twin Devils. I like how the campaign eschews the template of later day Mega Man NES titles and has the 8 Robot Master levels then the final four Wily Stages. They're pretty hard but having that singular gantlet (in which you can prepare with many lives and E-tanks) is a strong, tight gameplay decision.

This is pitch-perfect simplicity. It's a handful of the franchise's mechanics with a lot excess stripped away and refined until it came out just right.

I hate this game. The whole concept sucks to me. Instead of evolving the series in interesting ways, Mega Man 9 tries to replicate Mega Man 2 by removing features that made later games more fun, such as sliding and charging shots. The issue I take with this is that Mega Man 2 is not the perfect game everyone makes it out to be, but rather one that happens to be very good for it's time, which certainly isn't 2008. Although, considering the Legacy Collection's versions of Mega Man 1 through 6 include sprite flickering and slowdown (both caused by hardware limitation), being stuck in the past seems to be what Mega Man is all about nowadays. They actually went so far as to only have a few sound channels in this game, resulting in the music regularly getting interrupted by sound effects. This, too, is an artifact from the NES era. In addition, the game seems to be made by sadists for masochists who automatically find anything hard extremely fun. While the level design is generally pretty solid, it gets interrupted about every 2 minutes by some dumb trap the devs placed specifically to unexpectedly kill you. They are also way too comfortable with killing you for every single mistake you make. Wily Stage 2, an underwater hellhole full of spikes and multiple near pixel perfect jumps, exemplifies this quite well. Also, you can't save or visit the shop between Wily Stages, which, especially if you didn't know beforehand, makes going through them an absolute pain. In conclusion, this game is stuck in the past and bullshit hard to a degree that, to me, is only really acceptable in games without life systems. I never want to play it again ever.

A fun retro throwback to Mega Man 2, which is the best Mega Man (or so everyone says...) Like Mega Man 2, you are restricted to running, jumping, and shooting. There's no charge shot and none of that slide nonsense. In some ways it feels like a regression, especially for the 9th in the series and a game that follows a pretty good PS1 installment, but then that's sort of the point.

Really it's surprising how MM9 doesn't feel like it's out of step with the earlier entries. Sure there's some bits here and there that spoil how modern it is, but it feels so genuine to the originals that you'd be forgiven for thinking it was based on some long lost beta. Boss designs and theming were really being stretched thin by Mega Man 8, but they feel fresh again here while retaining that aforementioned authenticity.

That's also where I come down a bit harshly on this game, though. It's faithful to a fault. There's some incredibly frustrating stretches of levels and a few spots where cheap deaths are plenty, and a bizarre affinity for spikes (which cause instant death.) Mega Man was one of those trial-and-error type games, designed in such a way as to make it longer than it ought to be, but as a cheaper digital release it doesn't need to justify its price tag through length.

Still a very fun game though, and an important one for proving the worth of retro revivals. Without this we might not have games like Sonic Mania or Bloodstained.

While you may be turned off by Mega Man 9's NES difficulty and its gameplay explicitly harkening back to Mega Man 2 with a lack of Mega Man's slide and charge shot, and a few points in the game can be bullshit hard, it's even harder for me to look at it as anything less than a top notch title, with some of the best weapons and music in the entire classic series.

Yeah, this is the best Classic Megaman, no contest.
Levels are great, they each have distinct things unique to them that still keep the focus and gameplay the same. Only two I have any sort of problem with are Hornet Man and Jewel Man but with the ladder it's really only one jump and it's not like the entirety of HM's level is bad. Boss balancing is good here, there are some that are easier than others (Galaxy Man, Splash Woman) but none is an impossible first pick like some other games in the series, and no Wily Boss comes off as bs like ones only weak to one weapon or the abominable Yellow Devil Mk-II. I have consistently found use for EVERY ROBOT MASTER WEAPON which is actually huge, no other game even comes close to that.
Megaman 9 doesn't do anything new, but it takes all the good things Megaman has and uses them to great effect and the result is wonderful.

This game is VERY HARD, but VERY FUN. Everything about this game was scientifically planned and reigned to be as close to the authentic good mega man game as possible. The game is super hard, yes, and removes charge shots and slides, but it’s designed around the basic nes waiters to a tee. It’s a master class in how to design a challenging level, and it’s super good. Also Galaxy man is just the best robot master.

Galaxy Man is the cutest robot ever

This game feels the most middle of the road for Megaman games, two of my friends really like it for how 'challenging' it is, but I feel like that's not completely worth the higher rating. Its fun though, not as bad as some of the ones I don't like, but also not as good as the ones that I think are better.

MM9 is fine. Heh.

Well, this was my first ever favorite video game, so how does it stack up after all these years later?

sigh…

Pros:
-Banger soundtrack, one of my favorites from the franchise.
-Amazing sprites and designs for the most part.
-Decent platformer to pick up and finish in an hour.
-Tons of challenges and extra content.
-Some really good levels like Tornado Man and Concrete Man.
-Amazing weapons.

Cons:
-Lackluster boss lineup, especially coming off of the heels of the previous games.
-Usually relies on spike hazards and cheap obstacle placement, though it shouldn’t be too hard to deal with after some tries.
-Lack of rewards in the levels. You only get one E-tank from the robot master stages so you’ll have to use the shop to get through the Wily stages.
-Speaking of which, the worst shop system in the classic series by a landslide.
-Your only incentive to use the weapons is to fight enemies due to the lack of multiple routes like in 6, or stage hazards working with these weapons like in 8.
-Getting rid of the slide and charge shot was the biggest mistake. People said that was what ruined the later classic games when in reality it only made them more tight and fun to speed through.

It’s just a disappointingly bland platformer. It’s technically better than 5 for its short length and side content but this is probably the most bland classic experience yet. At least with 1 and 2 I can excuse their shite for being the first games in the series, but 2008 and we’ve only regressed from the design of the previous games. That’s just sad. Probably my least favorite classic game so far but it might swap between 5 and this game, I’m not sure.

How the original Mega Man Games can have so many fans is one of the little things about humanity I find to be completely incomprehensible.

This is one is actually very good. It certainly has some bullshit and seems to have taken some wrong lessons from previous games (cheap bottomless pits and spikes), but it's good. The Robot Masters are great (despite being pathetically easy) and their weapons are actually quite useful outside of boss weaknesses. Mega Man's movement has been stripped back for some reason (maybe to emulate the feel of older games), so you feel a bit naked for most of the game until you adjust again. The music is great. So yeah. I would recommend this as a good first Mega Man game, cheapness aside.

Vale a pena

Difficulty stems largely from traps, not fun to play and feels like it interprets the Famicom games' difficulty like a poor fangame would.

Top 3 classic mega man, you either see the vision on this one or you don't, really simple as

Honestly, I prefer Mega Man 8.

this was made in one week by some freshly-hired inti creates employee who just did a shitload of crack and was told about mega man 2, bottomless pits, and instadeath spikes for the first time all in a row

Mega Man 9 going back to the NES roots was something I knew about, but I didn't think I'd like it as much as I do. I honestly think this might be my current favourite Mega Man game since it checks off all the boxes and provides an experience that is both unique while staying true to the formula of Mega Man 2. As someone who adores Mega Man 2, it's easy to say the same for this game. The weapon roster is really fun to use, with the situational weapons feeling a lot more useful and enjoyable while the others felt really good to use if I wasn't feeling the Mega Buster. I'm a little sad that the charged Mega Buster and slide were removed, but I understand the intention and it provided some difficult platforming. Despite reverting to Mega Man 2's style, it still has features from other Mega Man games like 7/8's shop, Rush and Eddie from Mega Man 3, and Beat from Mega Man 5. The platforming and levels are also really difficult, but they feel fair and aren't riddled with many moments that I would call stupid, just difficult. Despite having to redo Wily's Castle since I didn't spend my currency prior, I still found it to be pretty fun and gained more of an appreciation for Wily's Castle in this game. Overall, I would say while this game is one of the more difficult games in the series, I find it to be one of the most fair games in terms of its difficulty and it becomes a lot of fun to play as a result.

Definitely much better this time around. While I still retain some of my previous critiques, like the bullshit shop system and overall just not being a great follow up from 7 and 8, it makes up for it with some of the absolute best level design in the classic series and pretty solid bosses and weapons, plus that OST kicks ass.

Damn, I did not expect to walk away from Mega Man 9 expecting to call it one of my more least favorite games in the series so far, because I heard mostly good of the game. And you know what, some of that good is really good. I do like the bosses, I like the weapons, I even really like the Wily bosses, they're the most consistently good (though not the absolute highest) they have been yet. I even like the story because it's point about an expiry date for robots is an interesting point I kind of wish was expanded on a bit more.

I just don't like playing this game. And I'm admittedly a bit upset to say that, because i knew some of stuff to expect. I knew this game removed some key tools like the slide and charge shot, and also the ones unique to 8 that I really liked. I heard a lot of good things about the weapon variety and bosses of this game, and a lot of that made me excited to finally see why people like it. I just wish the level design wasn't so dickish.

Each and every level of the game to varying degrees is filled with enemies with annoying patterns that love to potshot you, a plethora of death spikes and other insta-kill obstacles all across the game, and some really frustrating platforming sequences stringing these aspects as well as annoying mini-bosses that just make some levels really not fun. Jewel Man's is the worst, but I don't like Magma Man or Hornet Man's stages either. Pile all of this ontop of feeling overly limited from a lot of the stuff prior games had, especially 8, and you can kind of get why this game just doesn't do much for me.

I do know Proto Man has some of the stuff i'm looking for, like a slide and charge shot, but pile on the level design issues I have with his tendency to take double damage from everything, and no. I'm not doing it.

I'm not saying Mega Man hasn't had hard moments or bullshit level design. I think even some of the games I like a lot like 5 and 8 have some cases of it that you can point to. This one is just more consistently frustrating for all I described.

Don't get me wrong, I think this game does have some cool gimmicks here and there for it's stages, either revisited ones like the bubbles in Splash Woman's stage, or the weather changing in Tornado Man's stage, but also the enemies that create fake blocks you have to remember to stay away from in Concrete Man's stage, the shielded enemies you have to shoot to clear a path in Hornet Man's stage, the Teleporters in Galaxy Man's stage, and kind of the grabby dudes in the same stage. I think there is cool stuff, but not enough to erase the tedium.

This game feels too stripped back for me. I don't think it's intended to be an "evolutionary step forward", more to appeal to people who just wanted a new mega man game, especially those that liked 2 a lot, but even as that, I think it's just let down by how frustrating it is to play overall. Which again, sucks. I love a lot of the characters and bosses in this game, and a mega man game peddling a really interesting point with it's narrative is surprisingly welcomed. But... I dunno.

Either way, here's my boss rankings if you're curious.

8 - Concrete Man
7 - Plug Man
6 - Hornet Man
5 - Tornado Man
4 - Magma Man
3 - Jewel Man
2 - Galaxy Man
1 - Splash Woman

imagine releasing a nes game in 2008 lmfaaaoooo

This is a good game, but a damn frustrating one. The game asks a lot of you execution wise. You often know the answer to a platforming challenge, its just pretty precise so you'll die a fair amount. Its annoying since it just kind of feels hard just to be hard. The weapons are all pretty great. Once I got the laser trident, I pretty much never used the normal buster since its just a straight up upgrade in almost every situation. Mega Man games before this had a charge buster and slide, which aren't in this one for whatever reason. They compensated for the charge shot by having normal buster shots be really strong and move really fast, though not having the slide is just odd since it doesn't really take away from anything. Bosses are fun, though I don't think they're very interesting compared to bosses in 7, 8, and Bass. The game likes to call back to older mega man's but also doesn't really take the great parts of all of them that it could've. The music is great. The levels are fun, if a bit frustrating with the precision required for some parts. The Wily levels are just kind of exhausting since they're so long and you can't save between them. The final boss is super long and right after a boss rush, so that's also a lot. The music is quite incredible. Mega Man feels very fast and powerful. My main problem is that it feels like its hard for the sake of it and not really anything else. Otherwise, great game, but its very exhausting for me to play.

(Played via Legacy Collection 2)

A new favorite in the series for me. Best Mega Man soundtrack for damn sure. I never missed the ablities removed such as the slide and charged shot because the game just feels so suitably designed to the simpler Mega Man 2 gameplay. It's the game that most made me use the Robot Master weapons outside of the bosses and it did so incredibly with its kick ass level design that, in my opinion, is the smartest and most creative in the series.

Gameplay is the absolute best in the classic series. Turns out you don't need unnecessary frills like slides or jetpacks or snowboarding levels to have fun, all you need is good level design. Of which this game absolutely excels at. Just raw perfection in level design. Also a killer soundtrack helps.

"We ponder why Capcom chose to reduce its mascot into an itch.io fan game for release on the virtual consoles of its time.
While the game was enjoyable, we can't help but cringe at its attempt to replicate faux 8-bit to cash in on our collective nostalgia. Agreeably, the game used a 4:3 aspect ratio and can be played on CRT for an amateurish illusion of "old-school", yet only at 480i, bummer."
