Nintendo fumbled the bag horrendously with this one. A new entry in one of the most successful franchises and the first one in years comes out the oven barely cooked. Very small amounts of content and no improvements or signs of innovation. The least they could have done was supply GOLF at launch lolll. Instead it came out when everyone stopped caring. The core gameplay is what you'd expect, but this gets boring after a short while because all the sports are one note and there's little meat to the bone. Skip this. EDIT: 1.5 --> 2.5 Golf is actually really great and I've had a few sessions of playing this game recently which were really fun.
It's not a full-price title, but even at 40 quid, it's still bold of Nintendo to shift this at launch with a lack of content. What is here is solid - with the Chambara and Rocket League-inspired Football being solid inclusions - and there's obviously more to come with Golf in the fall and whatever else after. There's simply no reason this shouldn't have been cheaper or even bundled with the Switch with modes being bundled as different packages to purchase.
So yeah... it's not quite the zeitgeist the original Wii Sports was but it's still decent enough that you'll enjoy what's here (as long as you've got friends to play with).

I´ve played like 2hrs of this - and they were fun! I´ll probably play this like once a week in the forseeable future - with friends or without. It's fun in exactly that kinda way. Nothing here is truly exceptional (except maybe for the visual presentation which I actually like a lot), but nothing is bad by any standard (except maybe for Nintendo's online service which still - pardon my french - sucks major ass).
The only thing I don't quite get is the progression system? It's online only and has the consequence of you needing to spend a suprisingly long amount of time to have an even remotely indvidual avatar. It's also timed and based on luck, which... really irritates the chill vibe this game has going for it.

This game should've been on the Switch from the start. But I will say that the sports so far are lackluster. We got some classic sports back like Tennis, Bowling, Chambara (Swordplay) and also 3 new sports: Soccer, Badminton & Volleyball; with all of them just being similar to tennis. It doesn't help that Nintendo is pulling a Nintendo and slowly pumping out new content every few months to keep the players interested instead of adding them all from the start. That's exactly why not many people are playing anymore, because there's nothing new or interesting besides the limited time clothes. I'll get to that later, though.
The single player mode sucks, since it's not as interesting as the first two games. All of the satisfaction of working your way up to the top and becoming a PRO is now gone. Instead, you get to choose which difficulty you want to fight the CPU in. It's disappointing compared to what the original Wii Sports and Resort did, and it just shows that Nintendo did not care about single-player content in the slightest. They also removed the training minigames like breaking targets in tennis, 100 pin bowling and slicing random objects with your sword, which was asinine. You can kind of do a Tennis minigame in the credits, but I don't think that counts.
The gameplay is alright and simple to get the hang of. Unfortunately, you'll get the best experience playing online (ASSUMING ANYONE IS STILL PLAYING) because the single player content is barebones. My biggest issues with the online mode is the fact that the netcode is mediocre and you can only unlock more customization options by playing online matches. Instead of playing whenever I want to, I have go grind points in Bowling to get a set of items every fucking week. That's so monotonous. On top of that, people who don't even own Nintendo Switch Online can't even get the entire item sets, and they're only limited to 2 items. That's a terrible way to offer customization. They could have added an item shop that rotates items weekly and you could have gotten a currency from playing sports to buy them.
I'm glad that they brought back Mii CPU's, but having a playable Mii sucks because the customization options are so lacking. Especially after the last Switch game with Miis in it, Miitopia. It did a great job with having variety in makeup and outfits. What's the point of even unlocking new hats if you can't put them on the Miis? Maybe the biggest crime in the game is not allowing you to throw the bowling ball backwards like the last 3 Wii Sports games.
Ok, but seriously though. I'd give it a higher rating if the sports had more variety at launch, and added more training minigames for the sports. Other than that, this game is dogshit compared to Wii Sports and it's not worth buying unless you're playing with your family members and giving them the illusion that they're "exercising" by swinging 1 arm around.

feels unfinished? like literally just feels like a beta copy or something released by a third party company to make a quick buck. bowling just barely works, fencing is okay but gets old quick, soccer is just rocket league?? except you move super slowly, so its not even fun. tennis is just like a port of wii sports tennis. overall, bad, but character customization is nice
Yes, the new avatars are weird. Yes, it's thin on content. Yes, the motion controls are weirdly hit-and-miss. No, it isn't worth $40, let alone $50. Yes, they probably should have just rereleased Resort with extra features. That is not why my heart aches. Nintendo's sin is in not letting me throw the bowling ball backwards and making the people behind me do a funny little spin, and mark me: There will be a reckoning.
It's more Wii Sports. Outside switching some classic ones for new sports it feels very familiar. Online gives it more longevity for when you don't have friends/family playing with you at least. It feels light on content for a non-pack in title like the original one was though. Having Golf at launch would have helped but it feels like they really should have had other sports from the original like Baseball and Boxing in too.
The three stars are for bowling, which is great. Everything else is a letdown. Three of the sports are too similar (badminton, tennis, and volleyball) in a game that only has seven sports total.
The most disappointing part of the game is the lack of customization options for your character. Items can only be unlocked by playing online and are only available for a limited amount of time. To top it off, it's a lottery system. One of the most baffling systems I've seen in a Nintendo game.
