The better version of Smash 4 in my opinion. Smash Run is a blast to play through and this one has better stages than Smash Wii U. Getting all of the trophies is significantly easier in this game than in any other Smash game as this is the only game where I have been able to do so. In terms of features that both versions have, customization for the most part is fairly shallow but for the amount of time it would take to really expand upon it, it works and is satisfactory. The physics in both versions are noticeably faster than Brawl which is an improvement because while I enjoyed playing Brawl there were times when the game did feel a bit floaty. For the first portable Smash game, this game is definitely an impressive feat for what the 3ds is capable of.
Gonna be honest, as far as single player stuff comes, 3DS is way better than Wii U. Smash Run clears every single one of its modes, its exclusive stages are overall better, you don't really miss out on anything. It's still the inferior version just by virtue of the platform it's on, and Wii U might be better if it just didn't exist, but... yeah it's aight.
I don't think people give this game enough credit. Sure, it's much weaker than its Wii U peer, but to get Smash Bros. running smoothly on a base 3DS with an uncompromised roster couldn't have been an easy task. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS dropped about a month earlier than the Wii U version and while the latter definitely had more longevity at functions, this was the game that satiated my hype for the release. I remember sitting in the IGN chat threads for hours trying to get one of the demo codes, which was four characters and one stage.
The game ran really smoothly in offline and local wireless play, and I'm glad they decided against that shaded outline style that was teased in the first trailer. Probably the most unique feature in this one was the Smash Run mode which was a decent single player experience- obviously I'd prefer some sort of fully fledged adventure mode but this was a good alternative to just running classic.
Unfortunately, the game's online latency ssues held back those features with abundant problems regarding the connectivity and lag. Putting up with the online mode required a lot of patience and was a dealbreaker on this version of the game for many.
I had a blast with Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and it was a worthy handheld complement to the full fledged at-home experience.

All the problems with Smash 4's slow, clunky movement and game engine on the 3DS's cramped grey stick and buttons, a control scheme not meant for a precision action platform fighter. Smash Run is dope though; it's like Kirby Air Ride's City Trial, where you traverse a large map beating Nintendo enemies and collecting stat-ups in a 5 minute span in order to tackle a random type of challenge at the end, and I still boot this one up occasionally to play a few rounds.
Smash Run was so fun! I loved picking the game up every once in a while to just jump into the mode and see how overpowered I could get my characters. It really helps that between it and character customization, everyone could hypothetically become fun, fast bruisers with decent mobility.
PAC-MAN is one of my favorite characters to be added to the series, and I really enjoyed having a game where I could play as him, Kirby and so many other characters.
I suppose Ultimate probably obsoletes it these days, but I don't think I'll ever forget the days of hanging out in my boyfriend's dorm, casually playing Smash Run while watching him play something else.
