So glad this came out, I missed the time when licensed games were incredibly horrible and abhorrent messes.

Okay. So first up, you start off as Gollum, and if you look at him, he's kind of creepy and horrifying. Then you see some... beautiful image. But then Gollum shows up! GRRR! And also it's very dark, so it's kinda hard to find things, especially those VINES. It was just so dark. There was only like teensy bits of fire and that was your only light. And be careful, or else you'll accidentally fall off a cliff! Cuz I did.

I get it. This is a mid-to-low-tier, bargain bin PS2 game released on the 9th generation of consoles with a severe lack of technological polish and about two decades too late to cash in on the craze of the Peter Jackson trilogy. All stuff that is deeply unacceptable in this day and age. Yet, between the budget-caliber Prince of Persia​ knockoff platforming and surprisingly compelling moral decision-making, I remained invested enough to see the journey through to one of its possible conclusions and even have some fun with it despite the bugs, occasional infuriatingly designed segments, and at times remarkably unfinished graphics.

The real star of the show, though? Undoubtedly developer Daedelic Entertainment's rendition of Middle-earth. It carries just the right mix of the mature, dark tone and look of the Jackson films paired alongside hints of the more fantastical, whimsical nature found in the Rankin/Bass animated adaptations. It did a better job of recapturing the magic of this world that I've missed for me than the live-action Hobbit movies. They also got the titular character himself very right. Really encapsulating what a sad, tragic, pitiful, and strangely sympathetic creature he is. The tale itself, outside of getting a little outlandish even for this fantasy universe in its final act, is a neat little prequel expansion on the protagonist’s history prior to the books. Choosing between which of his two warring split personalities to side with at critical junctures doesn't radically alter where the adventure ends by the time the credits roll due to canonical lore reasons, but still adds some cool little personalized wrinkles to the path up to that point regardless that I really enjoyed seeing.

Having said all that, it nonetheless remains hard to recommend that people look past its incredibly negative reception and try it out for themselves, as only an extremely small portion of players of whom I just so happen to be able to count myself among will be able to look past the significant number of aspects that don't work like they should or were intended to, and find the traces of good buried underneath. One takeaway everyone will receive however, is that we need more Lord of the Rings games. We need more that explore unique characters or corners of the novels, and feature different gameplay styles than that of your usual hack 'n' slash or RTS efforts the way this tried to do. You see, the biggest disappointment of Gollum is that it exhibits truly good, intriguing ideas, but fails to capitalize on them in ways that are fully satisfying or completely functional.

I swear this just spawned into existence one day and everyone started making fun of it. Like 0 trailers or prerelease hype despite belonging to one of the biggest IPs of all time. Like what the fuck?

playing through this game made me feel a strange synchronicity across spatial and even fictional lines. gollum, one of literature's greatest wretches, forced to toil as a slave in mordor and eat little worms, the devs at daedalic, a company known mainly for point and click adventure games, forced to work on a game that they almost certainly knew they weren't up to the task of, and me, a dumbass, forced to play bad game because born with shitty brain.

I've always liked Lord of the Rings ever since I was a near adolescent kid, and to this day I still consider Gollum to be an extremely well written and compelling character, but this is a disgrace. Story is nonsensical, gameplay horrendous, and the only reason it isn't 1/10 is because it got the reputation that it deserved.

A truly catastrophic attempt to break into the AAA gaming space from a studio simply not equipped or qualified to build a game that can rival the likes of Monolith's Middle Earth games. This is the reason a number of games simply don't make it to the finish line and see the light of day. I honestly thought this was quietly cancelled several years ago and in-retrospect, maybe it should have been. I wish I were kidding when I state that this is modern gaming's closest equivalent to Superman 64.

Quando jogo qualquer game, meu objetivo é não apenas me divertir, mas também tentar entender o que o jogo é ou poderia ser se tivesse sido melhor desenvolvido. No caso de Lord of the Rings Gollum, ele sofre de um problema muito semelhante ao de Redfall, onde pessoas que nem mesmo jogaram o game começam a fazer críticas e comentários com base na opinião de streamers, youtubers ou sei lá mais quem. Mas... felizmente para essas pessoas dessa vez eles podem usar essa cartada.


Infelizmente, embora eu nunca tenha dado qualquer expectativa a esse jogo, ele é um jogo que, se você olhar o contexto como um todo, perceberá que tinha tudo para dar certo. Primeiro, ele se passa no universo de Senhor dos Anéis, uma das maiores franquias da atualidade. Em termos de história, Gollum conta (ou tenta contar) a história das personalidades do corrompido Sméagol e cobre o período entre "O Hobbit" e "A Sociedade do Anel". Interrogado por Gandalf sobre o destino do Um Anel, ele deve revisitar seus momentos na Terra-Média e contar como se tornou o braço de Sauron. No entanto, no início, a narrativa é cansativa e contribui pouco para a experiência de jogo. É estranho porque houve escolhas criativas nos capítulos 1 a 5 que poderiam ter sido melhores. Por exemplo, o fato de que nesses capítulos você basicamente escala, cumpre minigames, escala novamente, pula e escala mais uma vez. Não que isso seja necessariamente algo negativo, mas do jeito que o jogo está atualmente, é simplesmente chato e cansativo jogar dessa maneira. Os pulos são imprecisos, há vários momentos em que ocorrem bugs, é algo que não foi bem executado no jogo. Além disso, temos a parte furtiva, que é basicamente a mecânica central do jogo, afinal, nosso protagonista é uma criatura minúscula e obviamente não é bom no combate. No início, essa abordagem de jogabilidade é interessante, faz sentido, e se fosse bem desenvolvida, poderia ser muito divertida de jogar. No entanto, como eu disse, se fosse bem desenvolvida. Aqui, basicamente você só se esconde e vai de um ponto a outro, não há habilidades, ferramentas ou melhorias que tornem a jogabilidade furtiva mais inteligente ou criativa. Isso já é um motivo para desistir do jogo logo de cara.

Sabendo disso, considero a parte da história do jogo como a "menos pior" ou podemos dizer que é a parte que menos desagrada. Mas mesmo assim, as escolhas de roteiro não agradam, e a forma como a jogabilidade em si funciona também não te motiva a continuar jogando. No fim das contas, estamos falando de um jogo, então se quisermos apenas ver uma história, seria melhor ler um livro.

A qualidade gráfica do jogo é terrível. Nitidamente, não é um jogo de nova geração; facilmente poderia ser um jogo de PS3. Honestamente,

prefiro não entrar em detalhes sobre o porquê de ser feio e ruim em todos os sentidos, porque seria uma lista enorme, e não há necessidade disso. Basta abrir o primeiro vídeo no YouTube para ver isso.

Resumindo, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum é péssimo, é simplesmente uma vergonha a distribuidora desse jogo ter a coragem de cobrar de 150 a 200+ reais por isso. É uma verdadeira vergonha. Do jeito que o jogo está, ele valeria no máximo 10 reais, sem brincadeira. O jogo é frustrante, problemático e muito, muito cansativo. Grande parte da minha frustração com o jogo foi principalmente devido ao desempenho dele. Afinal, como eu sempre digo, já joguei tanta porcaria nessa vida que mais um jogo sem alma e genérico não faria a menor diferença.

- Tradução para o português do Brasil.

Contras:
- Narrativa péssima.
- Jogo repetitivo.
- Gráficos ruins.
- Quedas de FPS grotescas.
- Muitos problemas com travamentos e bugs.

The PS1 era was a time where creativity was still flowing and a great mind had a high enough budget to realize their ideas without being limited by the technology at the time
