if you can get past the pathological misogyny and the basically reactionary premise then there is a pretty good beat-em-up game here that really interestingly fits into the auteurship of rockstar games' overall oeuvre. an adaptation of one of the quintessential gang films provides perfect fodder for rockstar to explore their morbid fascination with crime and violence, but even beyond this they manage to fit in so many staples which especially cropped up in their games from this generation, like the inexplicable dancing minigame. also, it was interesting to see the origin of read dead redemption 2's hat-wearing mechanic originate here, with you being able to pick up and wear the various hats worn by rival gang members, after you bash it off of their heads of course.

the gangs you beat your way through are colorful and larger-than-life, and really appeals to some part of the brain that appreciates extreme tribal-like delineations. most of this is just a holdover from the great gang designs present in the film, but it is so faithfully maintained here. all the striking and bizarre coordinated outfits communicate everything you need to know about these Othered enemies - they are weird, they want to hurt you, and you need to hurt them before they hurt you first. the moonrunners' logo especially is so cool, like a self-flagellating version of the moon pie logo.

the mechanics are really intuitive and easy to pick up on but despite the game's brief playtime their simplicity inevitably becomes tedious as you work your way through the missions. the secret double dragon-esque bonus game you get for beating the core and flashback levels probably provided me with the most consistent dopamine hits; it was fun, boiled the game down to its most cathartic elements and it didn't outstay its welcome. i also played the main 18 missions twice, once on hardcore soldier mode and then the unlockable unleash the fury, and the spraypainting mechanic especially became incredibly tedious. while it is another mechanic that strangely lines up with and appears in rockstar's previous outings, i still respect them for retaining this facet of new york culture present in the movie and for using the tags of and crediting classic graffito artists in the credits too.

interesting as well for being an adaptation that faithfully recreates the events of the property it is based on while also expanding on the narrative and really fleshing out its world. i really respect it for its attention to detail in recreating the time-appropriate fashion and staying true to the movie's overall distinctly late-70s new yorker aesthetic. do video game adaptations usually expound on the source material so authoritatively like this? it is fascinating and captivating, and the prequel missions feel like the red dead redemption 2 to the movie-based missions' red dead redemption, with both contextualizing and further humanizing members of a gang which you only got a peek into before.

rumble mode also has a surprising amount of gameplay modes that are fun with a friend, but i think every woman in the game has a totally separate moveset that is really pathetic and makes them basically useless in almost all of the gamemodes. interesting subtext there. but this is a game that is just about 9 lumpenproles terrorizing a city, so it is at least congruent with itself.

Originally, I was playing this game on PS4, but then my console kinda died so I decided to upgrade to PS5 and continue finishing this game... yeah, that didn't happen because this game is a broken mess on PS5. So I just went ahead and played it on PS2, and I'm glad I did.

I was enjoying this game from the moment I started playing, being a fan of the movie, I can safely say it's one of the best movie adaptations ever made - and this game goes above in beyond in serving as a prequel AND an adaptation of the film. Gameplay wise, it's probably the most raw and brutal combat I have ever experienced in a game. Every punch you throw has weight and it genuinely feels like a ruthless street fight every time someone throws hands at you. R* really outdid themselves with this game. Even the music keeps in tone with the setting of the film.

If you liked the movie or just like beat em ups in general, you are doing yourself a disservice by skipping out on this masterpiece. Yes, the movement feels a little clunky at times but it's not enough to take away from the charm and fun that this game radiates. Just... don't buy this game on PS5. It's broken and probably won't be fixed anytime soon.

Perfect mechanics, extremely fun story and a prime example of a movie-videogame adaptation. I had hours upon hours of endless fun as a kid with this, checked it out a couple months ago and it's still a gem :)
Rockstar don't miss!

It was a very bizarre thing that a 70s cult hit such as this got a video game in 2005!
I'd love to see Rockstar do other classics from that decade, such as Annie Hall or One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.

A beautiful game, I stopped at the stadium stage. Soon, I'll get back to work on this game.

You will not hear from me when I get to play this fucking game without it lagging.

Big fan of the movie, I really enjoyed what they've done here.

The game starts as a prequel to the film, it teaches you more about their members and how the gang started, I especially appreciated how they gave a lot of story to Cleo, the leader of The Warriors. It really tries to fill you in on everything that the film couldn't, like many gangs that you see at the beginning of the film, but couldn't have an appearance due to lack of time.
They captured the charm of the movie perfectly with the visuals and the soundtrack, nothing feels out of place. And this adds up to the experience as you gotta defend your turf, rob stores, mark your territory and beat up dudes, all with the help of your gang members which you can order around. The combat is good and messy, you and the enemies get real bloody, the IA can be a bit cheap but you can get around it.

If you're a fan of the movie, it's definitely worth checking out. If you have a friend, the game has co-op too, and a few game-modes where you can VS each other.

If you ask me, this is probably my favorite movie game. I feel like when they adapted the movie to a game it was handled really well.

Rockstar Games apenas e somente.

everyone should watch the warriors and then come out to play this little gem. movie-based games don't get much better than this. quite possibly my favorite rockstar game

Everything the movie had to offer plus more this game is seriously overlooked and a 5 🌟 forgotten gem

Rockstar's most underrated game, and the best movie game ever made.

Backloggd come out to Play-ay!

The Warriors is without a doubt up there with the best of the best in terms of Movie-tie in game. Handled by Rockstar themselves (Toronto Team) when they had all the time in the world to pump out games, it was great to see a Late 70s filled with mystique fleshed out in not only a direct tie in but also a prequel to the events before the big event that kick offs the plot.

Bringing in most of the original cast to reprise their roles, The Warriors game is a great beat-em-up action game that generates a ton of fun especially with co op, but some levels can be quite frustrating in nature as there is some head scratching level design, also the throwing mechanic can just go to hell and have a baseball bat shoved up its ass and turned into a popsicle (I hated it lol). The A.I can be bonkers from time to time but being able to keep em in check with the Warlord callouts can mitigate it when it works (Which it does for the most part). For its time, its probably fine as this game can be beaten rather quickly in about 8 or so hours. Not bad for a Beat-em up. Tons and tons of extras to be had here. Cheat Codes, Rumble Mode (1v1, 2v2) which you can select any gang or even civilians. What's great is that every NPC can be playable in this mode. Flashback missions which provide even more content and context into the warriors history which is always appreciate and the beat'em up arcade within the beat'em up called Armies of the night, a 2D side scroller beat'em up lol similar to double dragon.

If you're a fan of the movie, it's definitely worth checking out. If you have a friend, I would highly recommend playing the game co-op. Lots of Shenanigans can ensue like punching each other on accidently when you meant to punch another gang lol. I played the PS2 classic version on the PS3 which can be bought for less than 10 USD (I think). The PS4 and PS5 ports can be hit or miss from my understanding so I would overall recommend sticking as close as you can to the OG version. PS2 digital on PS3 did not have any issues for me.

The movie was a mid experience for me. I certainly didn't hate it, but it's not something special in this day and age.

So my expectations were low but i wanted to give it a try because of the respect that i have for Rockstar Games. And I liked it pretty much. Combat mechanics are still good and enjoyable. They got the esthetics of the movie so well. The atmosphere is well made.

And it's sort of like a prequel too, that was a surprise for me aswell and the way they expand the story is so awesome. It's not like the best story but i enjoyed following it you know. Levels have their variety, objectives are fun to do (it's fun when you go to store and wreck everything for money lol) And boss fights were surprisingly fun too. Rockstar should bring boss fights again to their games!

Things that i don't liked:

Cops in this game is just a pain in the ass. The're always try to cuffs you and its so annoying bc it's almost only thing they do! And this prevents you from completing the objectives you have. Stealth is unnecessary and not well used in this game too.

And for the last thing: Like i said this game is a half prequel and when prequel parts is well and long the last quarter of the game is just too rushy. It's like a summary of the movie in one hour.

This game is a passion game for sure. Developers really wanted to make a Warriors game and they did. If i played this game at the time i would be blown away. But i am happy to tried it out in 2024.

Lastly: My suggestion is definitely watch the movie before you play it!

Thank you if you read all this dude. I don't know why i wrote that long...

The Warriors is the greatest licensed game of all time. They took a cult film, and not only adapted it beautifully, they expanded upon it's lore. Great combat, tons of modes, everything is playable in coop. What's not to love here? Check it out!

Not only a great adaptation but also a great beat 'em up

i remember crying laughing with my sister when you could spraypaint someone in the eyes during a fight

45 years later and New York City still looks like a shit hole

spamming the running attack is how i got through most of this game. lots of wrestling moves! gotta love that

my dad didn't let me play this game cause its too violent
I played it anyways >:)

I'll never understand how rockstar got such impressive ports onto the PSP. There's SO MUCH to this game.
heck of an expansive beat-em-up.

Call it a nostalgia ranking idgaf this game is tight as hell.

The only game that needs a remake
