This might be my favorite 2D Metroid, compared to Super, Fusion, and Zero Mission. Even on my 1st playthrough, I could see lots of opportunities to skip sequences and get to areas earlier than expected. And unlike Super, it feels smooth and controls like a dream. I loved the added mechanics in this game, like infinite bomb jumping and strafing. The only things weak in this game were the item hiding locations being pretty straightforward and the final boss being a pushover.
Fantastic work but still have some flaws. I've watched DoctorZ64 progress for years and played all the demos. My only regret is that the Metroid bosses are a pain in the ass to kill. Every single one is terrible. It's not a "challenge", it's a chore. That's what made Samus Returns on 3DS better than AM2R in my eyes.
Still, it's an amazing fan game.

This is honestly one of the greatest fan games I have ever played. The only exception in terms of fan games is the Sonic community, but the fact that Metroid II got a stellar Zero Mission-style remake done by a small group of fans is just awe-inspiring. Only issues I personally have with it is that it never got any official updates past 1.1, though fans have, and still are, rectifying that, and the Metroid fights are kind of bad and luck dependent. Otherwise, great game.
Improves on the original Metroid 2 in some really key ways that elevate way past the original. Feels much better to control, makes each zone distinct from one another, and has some great quality of life features (A MAP).
All the new stuff here is fantastic too. The new puzzles, bosses, lore, and areas are really the stuff that shines the most here. To the point where I kinda wish these designers just made a completely new Metroid fan game rather than building on the rocky foundation of Metroid 2.
This is still a game based on Metroid 2 and shares some of my biggest complaints with that game. The Metroid fights are still very repetitive, and attempts to give them movesets fall kinda flat to me. The old level design still feels really boring, and repetitive despite some attempts to spice it up. Traversing between areas is still a pain in the ass until you unlock a fast travel system late game, which helps but doesn't completely alleviate the problem.
This is still one of the most impressive fan games I've ever seen, and a great way to experience Metroid 2. It's just unfortunate that it still has the bones of Metroid 2.

First, let's get the obvious thing out of the way. Yes, despite being a fangame, this stands shoulder to shoulder with the official Metroid games. All the requisite ingredients for a good Metroid game are there: the atmosphere that is equal parts ominously alien and intricately futuristic, the complex exploration that rewards a careful eye, everything. That being said, the metroid hunting can get a little repetitive, and some of the locations leave just a little bit to be desired. I could see myself liking this more with a replay, but for now, it's solidly second fiddle to Super.
Metroid 2 has a great concept, and this is a really good rendition of it
A lot of the original's DNA is replaced with that of Super and Fusion but to me thats a good thing. This is the definitive way to experience this chapter of the Metroid saga.
The bosses are especially amazing - most of them rivaling the best of Super Metroid.
The music is the only thing that disappointed me slightly because it went too far in making Return of Samus feel like Super Metroid. It's still an excellent soundtrack, just not in the context of capturing the macabre and desolation of Return of Samus
