Black Mesa's Xen is mesmerising.
Half Life atmosphere is at its best when it puts to good use its setting as a means of story-telling. In this regard, the original Xen really wasn't as fleshed out as the rest of the game. Thankfully, Crowbar Collective's efforts in recreating the chapter did justice to the original idea and managed to go even beyond said idea.
That said, I didn't like a few design choices and gameplay tweaks that were made. Namely, some awfully designed open area gunfights, and the recurring physics-based puzzles pulled straight out of Half Life 2.
Moreover, it doesn't retain the same grottesque atmosphere as the original. Albeit preserving the same chromatic dichotomy of dimly lit sterile indoors and colourful sunbathed outdoors, the new character and gun models and detailed scenery really strip the game off of its original uncanniness.
Not that I'm complaining; on the contrary. I love that it is its own thing.

this game fucking whips but im certain its cursed. my power supply broke during the nihilanth fight, which proved to be more funny than anything, but when my friend was playing through the game a month in a half later, her computer started having serious hard-to-diagnose issues, which resulted in her just saying screw it and replacing several parts. play at your own risk.
It is rare that a project like this ever comes out. A full remake of the first Half Life made by the fans with support from the original Developers of the game. Black Mesa is truly a testament to what the fans of any media can achieve. Everything from the environments to the voice acting has been overall while still keeping the same general layout and feel of the original intact. Old areas like Xen no longer feel drawn out and dull to play with the developers focusing hard on redesigning the area so it not only looks better but plays better. I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone interested in a great first person shooter.
It's a really great extended remake of one the best games of all time. It really shows they worked on it very long and very passionately and ends up being a beautiful retelling of Half-life 1 with some changes in the story, especially at the end.
It offers a fresh but familiar experience with some added elements taken from HL2, and thankfully shortens some chapters which were annoyingly long in the original.
Then we have the Xen part which is very mixed in my opinion: it's a heavily changed part from the original, expanding it much more and adding brand new areas to go through. While it looks great and interesting, the problem is that the original intention of this part was endgame so they kept it short, but in this game it's dragging on waaay too long... It gets very heated by the end and most of the changes are beneficial, but I still can't help feel it just takes a bit too long, especially that "Surface Tension" was kept as long as it was...

A great remake of one of my favourite games with occasional rough spots, mainly when fighting the military. Half-Life is one of the few games I can happily fire up and play through at least once a year, and I can say the same thing for Black Mesa, which is pretty high praise. Certain bits of Xen drag on and are sort of shit, but fails to drag the game down.
A fine game that works better than half life 1 and its very impressive, but is still way too long without drastically changing the gameplay.
Pros:
Very fun interesting first half
I generally like the story and connectedness everything feels
The locations feel like normal buildings generally and that's interesting
Gameplay was fun and varied
Just a really solid FPS
Cons:
about halfway through the game i was feeling ready for it to end, then it kept going, by the time i got to xen i was really ready for it to end
Xen, despite having cool moments, throws out any fps combat for just a whole lot of platforming, you'll remain fully stocked for the entirety of the time as you occasionally shoot things
By the time you get to xen the puzzles have fully taken over which is the weakest part of the game, the started taking over just before then though
Still a very solid fps, one of the best.
8/10

Hate to admit, I've never played HL1... But damn this was saucy. I really like a lot of the intuitive level design choices, making it easy to know where to go, where to explore, etc.
gun-play and bosses feel very vintage, which I love, and graphics feel like a polished gen 7 game.
I wish more games were made like this.
