Decent "retro" styled beat-em-up taking place in the world of Final Fantasy XV. Now I haven't played FFXV yet, but from what I understand, the dev's have bits and pieces of lore sprinkled into different mediums such as a movie, comic, and this game I guess.
Anyways, it was free and I cannot complain about anything. The short story mode revolves around King Regis telling a younger Noctis bedtime stories based on the King's youth and his escapades with his comrades. It's nothing complex, but provides additional character to the King and how he could have been inspiration to Noctis and his friends in the future. I had a fun romp through my completionist playthrough thanks to the catchy 16-bit sound track, vibrant pixel art, and simple combo system. Once you master it, you can breeze through the game, but after you beat the story mode, you unlock "Dream Battle" which is essentially a challenge mode & arcade mode that tests your knowledge of the game's mechanics. I had to replay a few scenarios to get the challenge completed, but overall it felt reasonable and added to the fun-factor.

If i could explain this game in three words, it would be: free, fun, short (which is good in this case)

Cute pixel art style but the gameplay was too repetitive. It was nice to see a smiling young Prince Noctis ;;

This was very cute! Quick and fun combat! Baby Noctis too 🥺

You have no idea how much the music in this game slaps because you've never played this game.

Simple and fun. Great to hear an adventure from Regis.

OK so a free and short game that only serves to marketing had no right to be this good. The gameplay is well made and has lots of mechanics(we're talking a short free game here, and it's more deep than final fight or streets of rage), the summons have hi-res and a beautiful detailed pixel art, and the final boss is a very nice return of a famous character in the franchise.

A King's Tale: Final Fantasy XV is a retro Beat' em Up game taking place 30 years before the events of FFXV.

A solid Beat' em Up game with nothing special, short story but nothing important for you to even understand the story of Final Fantasy XV.

All in all a great 2D platformer, but the game doesn't last long, you will have fun for just few hours, but the bright side is that this game is free, there are none in-game purchases, so if you want to spend 3 or 4 hours trying something new in a classic way, this is a game for it.

Free game that takes about an hour to beat, it has some really nice pixel art and the presentation all round is quite nice. The gameplay is extremely simple but solid enough. Ultimately feels quite lacking in substance.

Glad this was free because it was pretty boring. No strategy, pure button masher. It wasn't offensively bad, but it wasn't good either. The best thing about this game is the gorgeous pixel art for the summons.

I wish I could put a reaction meme as a review

I played this game solely for the trophies. It’s not awful, but it’s not very good either. Having Ultros as the main antagonist props it up a little bit.

An ok beat'em up, I suppose? Kinda forgettable still. It's amazing how much Square Enix decided to fully focus so many possible FF XV related titles + a whole movie in a single swept for intensively promoting the real deal.

Really fun beat'em up. The controls are great and it's free.

Nice game to play when you wanna expend your XV experience

It's got a kinda cool battle system going on but it has a bad case of "free preorder bonus game" jank

An Ok but very short beat em up, gets repetitive a bit too quickly which is a problem considering you could beat this on a single sitting.
It's a cute addition to the Final Fantasy XV mythos but gives nothing to the larger Final Fantasy XV narrative

A simple little hack and slash that doesn't waste its time.

Had a blast with this short 2D side-scrolling beat em up prequel to FF XV. I love the way it uses Regis telling Noctis a bedtime story as the framework and how it weaves in quite a few direct references to "The Princess Bride". The combat is mostly button-mashing but it all works well and is very satisfying to mix different magic spells and blocks with melee attacks. It also does a really good job of translating the Armitage and companion attacks from the main game into this genre. Dream Battles post-game are pretty cool, too. Fun little challenges. All in all this was a short, neat alternate experience within the realm of arguably my favorite FF game. What's not to love?

If this game wasn't free, it be a tragedy. They finally make a Final Fantasy Beat'em Up, IT WORKS REALLY WELL, and YET... It's single player? Why Square Fu'd this up, I don't know, but literally everything about this game just screams better than what it was suppose to be. It's fun seeing The King in FFXV talking about his old days, the combat feels great, they added a really neat magic mechanic, and the enemies translate well into the beat'em up genre. This game really stands out as a sore thumb because it's both free, and surprisingly bare. Like what is there is absolutely fantastic, but in terms of the rest of the bells and whistles? It just doesn't fancy itself as more than that. While It's certainly hard to get mad at a functioning free game, it's annoying at what loss potential this game has. Even just adding 2 player couch co-op would have been a god sent to this game, but as it stands it's just a neat little pre-order bonus.
