kkkk.... Hazama aqui tem reversal no houtenji e hiren loop ...

this actually the first one i ever played ...very great games with on of best addition in the whole series ( Abyss mode ) easily recommended you can even played this version (extended ) that have great recaps on events of Calamity Trigger ...and Tsubaki deserve better person in her life than you fucking gey virgin loser (jin ) piss off

This was the first fighting game I played where it all clicked into place and I became a fighting game fan.

Really like this game.
Great characters, amazing OST and nice to play.
I remember playing this online and even local with some friends and it was a great experience even if I lost like every match lmao

First game explains nothing so now this game spends 8 years explaining both of them. Despite the fact I won't understand what happened til I scour the wiki, this felt way more cohesive and engaging than Calamity Trigger (which has its own recap in Continuum Shift, making it way more pointless for people to play). The stories interlocked a lot, which made it really satisfying to see each character's unique perspective, I started enjoying the CT characters more and remembering more of their moves, and listening through the soundtrack outside the game has made me appreciate it more. I'm pretty excited to see Chrono Phantasma's new characters and story as I feel myself slowly being groomed into the fanbase for the kingdom hearts of fighting games.

I'll definitely give this game more props than the first in terms of single player content; this game has a story that is actually comprehendable. The new characters were also really fun both in the VN sections watching them interact with the story as well as how they play as fighting game characters. Glad I decided to play this on vita instead, since I feel like the VN style plot of blazblue fits handhelds better.

BlazBlue Continuum Shift follows Calamity Trigger by like 3 or 4 days I think, and directly follows up on pretty much every plot thread from its predecessor. Mechanically it’s much the same, a series of refinements and system changes that better get at what separated Calamity Trigger from its contemporaries, not dissimilar from the jump from Guilty Gear X to XX.

I still don’t really know how to critique it as a fighting game, honestly. The mechanics feel good. The characters seem like they make you play into their unique abilities much more (I was able to rush cpu opponents down with Rachel in Calamity Trigger, but that shit don’t fly here!). Beyond that, I’m kinda clueless, even as far as knowing what specific changes were made. But it still feels good, and it feels even more like blazblue.

As far as the story-mode goes, things have been improved a fair bit! Not only is there more to it (more characters will do that to ya), but the QOL is vastly improved. Now you don’t need to lose every permutation of every fight for 100% completion! Plus you can finally retry fights that don’t branch the path! That’s some good stuff, and both make going through the story more painless.

Even with all that though, I’m still a bit less impressed with this game than the previous one. Maybe it’s partly because it’s not a huge mechanical jump, but I think a lot of it comes from how the story is structured? This time each character has a canon ending, an alternate (bad) ending, and a gag ending. Sometimes there’s multiple alternate endings I think, but that’s the broad structure.

The bit that’s really different here is the canon ending, the true ending, for each character. In Calamity Trigger, at least as far as I could understand, the only canon storyline was the actual True Ending path that you unlocked after beating everyone else’s storyline. Sure it was confusing, but I really appreciated how they contextualized this fuzzy storytelling as “one of many possible futures”, and as a feature of the particular way the world of blazblue is built.

The new style results in much more concrete storytelling, which is much more parseable but also (I think) loses a bit of the unique burn the last game left going down? I wouldn’t say this is a downgrade for anyone but me though lol, but it still definitely matters to me.

That being said, it’s definitely a more full package and a more unique and polished fighter, and would be easy to recommend if, you know, there weren’t two more afterwards. Still, for the story it’s a good buy, and what’s here is good (even if I don’t love the less fuzzy storytelling and very early 2010s localization).

This is a follow up to the review I did on BlazBlue Calamity Trigger on this site. Which you can find here. I'm basically binging the series so might as well make a bit of a retrospective out of it. This is also once again not from a competitive perspective.

If I had to sum up this game in a sentence it’s “BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend is the perfect fighting game for people who don’t like fighting games”

In my personal opinion BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend is the perfect sequel. It takes everything that didn't work in Calamity Trigger and fixes it while also adding tons of new content and improvements to the game. First things first the game (at least the extend version because fighting games pre DLC) adds a total of 8 new characters to the series.

Tsubaki who’s Drive “Install” allows her to charge a special meter that can be spent to use powered up versions of her special moves and is an all arounder in playstyle containing the majority of shoto tropes.

Hazama is a mixup character you uses his Drive Ouroboros to fly around the stage and uses his Serpent’s Benediction stance to mix up his opponents and is my favorite character to play as.

Lambda 11 is basically Nu-13 (who she replaces on the character select screen) except with a focus on hit and run tactics rather then pure projectile spam.

Makoto is a basic Rushdown character who’s impact drive allows her to charge up her punches to deal more damage and knockback.

Valkenhayn is another rushdown character except he does in by transforming into a wolf which allows him to do all sorts of crazy moves

Platinum the Trinity is a stain on the Eart- I mean the resident RNG character who’s drive Magical Symphony allows them to equip various items for use in battle.

Relius is basically puppet character number 2 and I think I can once again leave it at that.

Mu 12 is a setplay based zoner who controls the screen by setting up “Stein Gunners” which are turrets that will fire on the opponent after a set time.

All of these are great editions to the roster because most of them are either set up in CT or appear as NPCs in the story of that game. Which makes them being playable make perfect sense. all of them except Makoto I guess bring a new and interesting playstyle to the series and that's just something I love about BB's gameplay in general the variety of playstyles is top tier. The returning characters have also seen some changes in the form of new moves and properties as well at the addition of the “Stylish Type” control scheme which is basically beginner mode which changes special moves to be Smash bros inputs and allows for auto combos which is a pretty nice addition.

Anyways next up on the agenda is the new modes. Arcade and Score Attack (which I forgot to talk about last time) are back from the last game but there are 4 new additions in the form of Tutorial Mode (thank god), Challenge Mode, Abyss Mode, and Unlimited Mars Mode. Tutorial mode is a god send because of all the crazy mechanics the game has and the best part is that it's all being taught to the player by the characters which is just a really charming touch. Challenge Mode is basically just combo trials which I'll admit aren't great but they're still a decent way to kill a few hours by throwing attempts at it. Although most of the combos feel pretty useless due to difficulty. But I digress. Abyss Mode is basically this weird RPG mode thing where the player can unlock and buy perks that they can use to explore a "Dungeon" (basically a gauntlet of fights) as they try to reach to bottom with a "boss" spawning every 20 floors and this is honestly pretty addicting With me sinking way more time then I should have this playthrough trying to complete the final dungeon. Remember Unlimited Characters? Well they're back and in Unlimited Mars Mode they are out for blood as you have to beat every single on of them in a row. This is without question the game's ultimate challenge and I'll be the first to admit that I can' do it. I'm too bad at video games to pull it off. Especially because of Hazama, Ragna, and Mu-12. In fact here's an achievemt for just trying the mode 10 times because of how much you're gonna get your ass kicked. Arcade Mode as stated before is still here but took a bit of a hit due to all the characters effectively having the same ending outside of like 2.

Now on the main event outside gameplay. Story Mode's back and there's more then ever! instead of the 8 hour+ campain for doing the bare minimum we have a 15+ hour campaign assuming you skip CTR and the EX stories bare minimum and with those it's more like 20+ minimum. It's honestly a bit overwhelming. Let's start with Calamity Trigger Reconstruction.

Calmity Trigger Reconstruction is basically a condensed retelling of CT's story combining Ragna, Noel, and some of Jin's story into a 5 or so hour story line and in many ways it's a genuine improvement over the original. They finally fixed the issue of lack of music thanks to actually using that unused music in cutscenes. World building is actually done within the game this time instead of the manual and the characters are written to be more in line with the rest of the series. The easiest to see of these being Ragna. Who went from just being kinda cranky and edgy. To a grumpy sarcastic asshole (aka my spirit animal) who just wants to be left alone and the writing in general is overall improved and just less overly serious and edgy all around. With a lot more goofy shit happening.

It's not perfect as there are some details that were left out like Hakumen's origin and the ending doesn't feel as earned due to the reduced length. However the sequel bait ending is nowhere near as bad because this is more of an optional prologue rather then being the entire game this time. I'd still say you should play the original CT in addition to this but if you have to pick one play CTR. Overall great remake.

Now on to the actual CS storyline. CS’s story takes place a few days after CT ends with the world being thrown into a “Continuum Shift” thanks to the events of the last game. It’s multiverse theory and is mainly just an excuse for the character stories to contradict each other again and the game follows 18 out of the 19 playable characters as well as having some “Extend Stories” to flesh out some of the lore of the series. Character endings have thankfully been simplified from the last game with everyone but Hakumen now having only 3 endings (he has 2) with there being a Joke, Bad, and True ending for each character and the story only being counted as cleared for getting the true ending. Also the game has you unlock stories in sections rather then all of them being playable at the start. Due to these changes the game is able to do a much much much better job developing plot points and not confusing the player. Helping this even farther is that the writing has improved all around. With things like fights being much better justified compared to last time and lore being explained more plainly. Honestly some stuff feels like it should have been in CT instead of here. The finale is also much much better then last time and is probably one of my favorite finales in all of video games. There’s still some sequel baiting but it’s nowhere close to last time and actually feels natural this time.

Now it’s not perfect there are a few stories I’m not the biggest fan of. Those being Taokaka’s because a few joke really missing the mark, Platinum because I just despise Platinum, and Makoto for being a bit too far out there even by BlazBlue standards. Although I’d say there isn’t a truly bad story in this game (beside maybe Makoto) and all of them are bare minimum decent. Also the Sector Seven Extend Story being locked behind a bad ending is extremely stupid and I had to look up a guide to figure out how to get it and the language is as foul as they can possibly get away with without receiving an M rating and yes there’s a joke in one of the joke endings when they reference how close they come to an M rating.

The thing is though if there’s one word I can use to describe how I feel about this game’s story it’s “Charming”. Now hear me out. BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend is stupid. But here’s the thing. It’s a game that knows it’s stupid but instead of being a dumb jokey meta game it just runs with it. It’s a game that knows exactly what it is and because of this self awareness it’s able to create some honestly dark and emotional moment while at the same time allowing the stupidest shit possible to happen in fact some of the joke endings are practically self parody but once again it’s still able to be serious when it needs to be. It has a charm that I’ve rarely seen replicated especially in indie games where often they try to make it a ha ha aren’t we so meta and subversive fest.
Also the voice acting has improved to near perfection to me (played Dub once again) the only mark against it is that they changed some of the VAs in the extend sections of the game which is pretty jarring although the only one that really took a hit was Bang as Hazama’s new VA is just as good and Hakumen’s voice modifier change is just a really jarring weird change rather then being outright bad.

I’m trying my best to explain it but it’s very much a “you have to play the game to get it” sort of thing. Mind you this is a game that’s definitely not for everyone. But I can’t help but love it. It’s my favorite game of all time and I have no shame in admitting that. Does it have flaws? Of course it does! But most of them honestly make the game more endearing to me 5/5. It’s just a game that has something for everyone may it be great gameplay or just a fun story. This was really hard to write partly because of how hard it is to explain why I love it and because it’s just hard to talk about this game in general without going into spoilers. Also the same fix for the PC version I mentioned in the last review applies here.

BlazBlue is a newer fighter from the guys behind Guilty Gear. The game has crazy characters, beautiful art, and an awesome soundtrack, but has one of the most complicated fighting systems I have ever played. Jump cancels, combo cancels, high jump cancels, canceling mid-combo it continues said combo, this is all just ridiculous and literally gave me a headache. The story is also something to be desired, but the overall characters are fun and the game is a good button masher.

The game also has a lot of modes which means you get your money’s worth. Not only do you get arcade, story, and a tutorial mode, but an endless mode, online play, score attack, a full gallery, and a few others. Unlimited Mars is a mode where you fight against advanced AI, and mission mode allows you to fight waves of enemies. There are lots of things to do here, but overall you won’t spend too much time in either mode because it all feels repetitive after a while. When I went into the tutorial mode I pretty much gave up 3/4 through because of how complicated the fighting system is. Thankfully there is a Stylish mode which simplifies the whole thing and allows you to do complicated combos with only a few button presses, but all the other elements like shield barriers, different blocking techniques, this meter, that meter, it all just becomes too much.

BlazBlue does become an entertaining button masher once you get the hang of it, but only hardcore fans will attempt to master the fighting system. I even found the arcade mode to be long-winded, and there’s just too much talking in the game. There’s a “Teach Me Miss Litchi” section in the story mode that is just constant yapping about tips on the game. You get to experience the other two story modes from past games, but there is more talking than fighting here. Sure, it’s entertaining, but I couldn’t wrap my head around the overly frustrating and complex fight system to enjoy it enough.

Once you spend a few hours in the game you will put it down at this point and that’s when you will decide if you like it or not. I highly suggest renting this first for newcomers, because even Street Fighter or other Japanese fighting game vets will balk at this game. The animations and sprites are beautiful, the soundtrack is great, and I can’t help but really dig the characters here despite all the complaints. Sticking to Stylish mode eased some of a headache-inducing memorization.

Overall, the game is great for fans of the series, but the newcomers may want to seriously consider this a rental first before buying. If you do buy it there is tons of content to keep you busy with many modes. Online play is the usual blast, and the only reason to come back to any fighter these days. The characters are awesome with great personalities, and the visuals are stunning. I just wish the fighting engine itself wasn’t so complicated and complex.

funny ass game. it straight up did not work on my pc, fps either switching between 49 and 57 every 3 seconds, lag every time someone moved, or at the very end sound effects and voices straight up not working. none of this stopped my enjoyment of the story, except maybe that last one. hazama, ragna, kokonoe, rachel, jin, bang, and tager all have such great voice actors (and they replaced tony oliver as bang in chronophantasma booo) and the translation is like 2000s fanpatch level of funny, its refreshing hearing people say the funny r word in video games again. most of the gag endings got me to chuckle, and the plot summary of CT (which ran at sub 30 fps might i add) was good enough that i didnt even worry about having to play it. so far CPEX story is shaping up to be more vn than fighting game which is sad, but whatever. hazama is still really funny and its also funny seeing how his moveset changed, and this game also introduced me to the fun times to be had when playing noel or platinum. definitely worth the 1 dollar i paid on g2a for it.

First one I actively started with, Tsubaki a top cute. I really love Continuum Shift's story structure and wish it stuck rather than the pure VN Blazblue would later go to.

jogo bom e historia legal, mas peca muito na narrativa

It's a bit convoluted with a lot of Proper Noun terms that I had to look up to keep track of, but I'm invested in where the story is going, the characters are much better written than I thought they'd be, and the actual fighting game parts are fun. The highs were pretty high and the lows weren't that low.

I will say parts of the localization didn't age very well in my opinion. There are some outdated quirky pop culture jokes that did not land for me, and what feels like a lot of adding lines/changing some of them that didn't need to be for the script. As a result, some of the dialogue felt a bit bloated and the comedic timing of some jokes felt off. The prose itself reads fine outside of this, and it's a pretty impressive translation effort for its time.

There's also some slurs here and there that are definitely a product of their time and that I am sure were not there in Japanese (I played with jp voices on) so I won't hold it against the team that much, but I'm mentioning it in case anybody wanted a heads up.

All in all, it's a good time and you can get it for pretty cheap these days, so it's worth a try. It has an easy mode of sorts if you aren't good at fighting games and just want to enjoy the story. Like I said, I played it in Japanese but the English dub is perfectly fine too and has some good performances.

a definite improvement over calamity trigger gameplay-wise and FAR more understandable story-wise but those stories did feel as if they dragged on for a bit too long. i did really like the characters though, new and old. old ones got some improvement and new ones, for the most part, are pretty likable.

My first Blazblue game and the first fighter i took seriously. Once i saw Tager's command grab damage i felt the NEED to learn how to play. This game has a special place in my heart because it's the one that started my journey into "getting gud" in fighters and my love for grapplers.

As for the game itself, it has a pretty fun story mode just like CT, some really funny gag reels that are 100% worth watching, a score attack and a super bullshit mode called Unlimited Mars (actually pretty fun to play and easier than CT's awful score attack, still hard as balls though) wich i beat for the first time pretty recently when replaying this game for the story mode.

There's also a rougelike mode called Abyss, it's... ok i guess.
And the arcade endings are dissapointing compared to every other game. It's variations of the same ending for most chars, it sucks ass.

Still 100% worth it for the story mode if you care about that and Unlimited Mars is a lot of fun. Otherwise just go to Central Fiction.

this story is way too complicated for a fighting game, but not for a visual novel

Ragna the Bloodedge is the best

I wish I was good at fighting games

My entry into BlazBlue, and for some reason I played it on the Vita. Platinum main!

É a melhor versão de blazblue pra PSP, pena que pelas limitações ele seja quase impossível de se jogar sem o modo stilish, mas isso não tira mérito de ser um jogo bonito, com muitos personagens, divertido, e cheio de conteúdo.

I skipped Calamity Trigger and basically used the CT Retelling in this game.

Continuum Shift's story was OK, but I'm not really a fan of Blazblue CT and CS's style of telling story through character routes. I much prefer Chrono Phantasma and Central Fiction's style.
