Final Kart Fantasy

Final Kart Fantasy Review

Chocobo GP... what can be said about this apparent Mario Kart clone? Initially, it's important to acknowledge that while it bears a striking resemblance to MK, it manages to carve out its own identity with considerable finesse. Although it falls short of the lofty standards set by classics like MK 8, it admirably fulfills its primary purpose: delivering an entertaining kart racing experience complete with power-ups. The game offers a variety of modes including story mode, free race, championship, and online multiplayer.

The game's storyline is simplistic and arguably superfluous, especially considering that titles like MK8 don't emphasize narrative. However, since progression through the story mode is essential for unlocking certain characters, players are compelled to engage with it. While it's skippable, those who delve into it may find amusement in the witty banter and occasional fourth-wall breaks from the characters.

Regarding character selection, Chocobo GP boasts an impressive roster drawn from the Final Fantasy universe, ranging from beloved classics like Chocobos and Black Mage (VIVI!!! <3) to iconic figures such as Cloud, Leon, and Terra, alongside entities like Titan, Ifrit, and White Mage. Each character is customizable, offering a diverse array of karts and outfits to personalize your experience. Despite the abundance of unlockable content, including characters, outfits, and karts, the game falls short in terms of track diversity, with designs that feel somewhat uninspired compared to titles like Crash Team Racing or MK8. The soundtrack, typically a highlight in Final Fantasy games, is serviceable but lacks any standout moments, predominantly comprising revamped versions of franchise classics.

Gameplay-wise, Final Kart Fantasy adheres to the tried-and-tested formula of kart racing with power-ups, requiring players to collect items—represented as eggs—that grant spells such as Firaga and Blizzard. Each character also possesses a unique special ability, offering varying advantages ranging from increased speed to offensive maneuvers against opponents.

In summary, while Final Kart Fantasy may not revolutionize the genre or achieve groundbreaking heights, it undeniably offers an enjoyable experience, albeit with notable challenges, even on the easiest difficulty due to the overly aggressive AI. Fans of the Final Fantasy franchise or kart racing enthusiasts may find it worth their time, particularly if acquired during a sale, as the full price may not entirely justify its value.

The most sauceless racing game I've ever played

I hate this game, they used my favourite little bo to push one of the most malicious and disgusting monetary grab bag trash. I spent no money and still feel robbed. Chocobos deserve better.

With its despicable microtransaction model now completely gutted from the game this Summer, Chocobo GP shines brightly as a frantic and entertaining kart racer. Excellent course and character designs, nuanced mechanical depth, and tons of unlockables – now earned entirely through player progression – make this worth revisiting in 2023.

Worth getting now if you don't already own MK8D. They got rid of the initial business model so every item is now purchasable with in-game currency, which you get by simply playing through the different modes (story mode included).

as someone who has long wished nintendo would just make super smash kart or something instead, this was a fun surprise lol.

never in my life before had i properly appreciated how well balanced and designed mario kart 8 deluxe is until playing this game

also special shoutout for having what is i think a strong contender for worst video game tutorial of all time

Don't worry, Mario Kart 8, you can breathe easy in the knowledge that as far as kart racers go, it's still the undisputed king.

I bought this because it was less than a tenner and I was feeling a bit nostalgic for the franchise (mainly just the ps1 stuff). Having played the free version at launch, it's safe to say there's been a lot of improvements between then and now and for the most part it is a fun and competent mascot racer. The online tournament is good fun (yet to finish anywhere other than GRAND CHAMPION), and the occasional Eurobeat arrangement of classic FF music is a good laugh, but the grind to unlock new characters and vehicles is not. Getting most of the characters isn't too much of chore, as a couple of goes through story mode and the standard GP's will get you there before long, but accessing alternative vehicles, with different stats for each character is a lot more long winded, and you may have run out of said wind by the time you've completed the story and gp modes.

Racing as Cactuar is good fun, but the special was pretty iffy, getting caught on the sides quite a lot because of shite hit detection.

Races vary from great to terrible, depending on whether you can get away far enough from the pack to avoid the relentless onslaught of power ups and offensive items. It takes the piss at times and the recovery time feels like forever.

Fan service aside, it's a passable kart racer, which for less than a tenner, I definitely got my money's worth. Doesn't hold a candle to MK8, though. That bar is set way too high.

Now that people are celebrating a re-release without microtransactions:
I'm going to specifically say that my review and low score is not about the microtransactions I didn't care that they were there because the game is just bad. Full stop.

The item system is cool and a nice evolution on Diddy Kong racing's However because of all of the item boxes being entirely random there is no strategy to it whatsoever.
The track designs are so short and wide that Even if you take the tightest racing lines you would can still get passed by somebody who has better item generation.

On top of that it has a two-lap structure making it an extremely quick game to play through, However because of the aforementioned item system and the aforementioned short tracks there is no skill involved whatsoever.
Your best strategy in order to win the race is to hang back get good items and then immediately use them so that you just go through the laps as quick as possible without doing anything.

I was excited for this game on release but it is terrible on top of that It seems to be designed for mobile platforms aiming towards the Mario kart tour audience.
Which is something I detest because that's not a game you play at all.
Chocobo GP is a disappointment, a miserable game, and everything wrong about cart racers, with or without microtransactions.

I really, really wanted to love this game. And it was a lot of fun to play! But the cash shop transactions and the early death of support just... killed it for me. Not to mention the lack of couch co-op...

I waited 23 years for this... I think waiting is more fun than this crap

Why is the gacha sixty dollars?

Abysmal. It's a Mario Kart clone with FF characters tracks and music, it should be exactly my kind of thing but they completely blew it by including F2P-style battlepasses, paid currency, and FOMO season events. I'm giving it 1 star because Steiner is in it.

This could have been an amazing game and some real competition for other kart racing games out there, but Square Enix had to be greedy yet again.

They have also officially stopped the support for the game. Big sad.

What should have been a fun Final Fantasy-themed kart racer ended up as one of the most laughable Square Enix titles in recent memory and easily the most disappointing game of the year for me. The racing gameplay is actually good and the tracks were good too--though lacking in variety-- but ultimately it was destroyed by greed.

First off, the racing is competent and fun. The handling feels nice and the item system takes a pretty cool spin on classic Final Fantasy spells. The music and remixes are nice, too (main theme excluded). That is where most of my praise ends. The story mode is non-sensical with very annoying voice acting and bad writing (not that big of a deal since it is probably written for children). It is also laughably short at not even 2 hours long. The online racing is the primary focus and it isn't perfect but it mostly works. The GP mode is kind of like a battle royale mode. You are placed into individual races and if you finish in the first couple positions, you move onto the next race. However, races would randomly drop sometimes and just end the whole bracket, which is not very fun.

The microtransactions are just insane and I do not know how Square Enix thought this was a good idea. To gain the privilege of spending money on the game, you cannot use the free version (which is extremely limited and not even really worth trying). You have to purchase the $40 base game. Once you have, you have to purchase the battle pass for ~$10 to earn new characters, skins, and other awards. To earn rewards for the $10 battle pass that you just purchased, you have to grind online races only in the GP mode. Races give you a very small amount of battle pass points so you have to grind for upwards of 10 hours or more just to get a single new character. It is all very sad.

Don't play this game lmao

this game got deservedly raked over the coals for being horrifically monetized on launch, but they've since yanked all that crap out after it failed and what's left is a feisty lil kart racer with some comically busted characters

the main menu song will bore itself into your brain and lay eggs

Core gameplay isn't Mario Kart but it delivered some fun and nice fanservice. Seeing some FF VI and IX content tributed like that made me smile.
I was shocked to hear that originally the game was supposed to run way slower than the actual final product.

Story is absolute cringeworthy garbage, online is trash and bugged in the most ridiculous way possible.

The main song is a psychological torture device.

There's so much disappointing with this the more you think about its setup. Sure, the original Season Pass approach deserves to be derided, but even removing it this game feels sparse in a way that it shouldn't. 9 tracks (with some slight variant extras) is entirely too little to release a kart racer with. The game sometimes feels like it fights against trying to even teach you its systems. Despite the great improvements made on Chocobo Racing's Magicite item system here, these changes only make the tournament mode only feel more frustrating throughout the waves of lag.

I want to like the kart racer with a cute story here a lot. I also genuinely think attempting a season model to a kart racer is a great way to keep a community active and alive for it. The combination of things in this exact title makes everything feel like an incredibly miserable experience.

There's super fun and competitive tournament style modes that cycle through quick and gave me lots of good action, but it absolutely got maimed unnecessarily by its monetisation schemes - in a game I already dropped £40 on. A very definitive case of buyer's remorse. I'm not surprised it didn't last long in terms of support and it's upsetting that it happened like it did - through another all-too-common occurrence of corporate greed.

if this was season 1 of this game i wouldve gave it 3 stars, but since season 2 onward, this game has became PEAK. (chocobo gp better than mk8d no cap 😳)

CHOCOBO, CAMILLA, AND CAMILLA'S PA! ATLA, CLAIR, AND THEN THERE'S BEN! SHIRMA, IRMA, AND THEN THERE'S CID! RACING HERO X THE MOOGLE'S HERE!

Thank goodness they removed the microtransactions and made it a normal game. All in all, it's a solid racer with a cute artstyle, fun & charming story mode, some neat fanservice, and a great soundtrack. I just wish you could change the menu theme...

I wanted to love this game but tbh the microtransactions turned me off which is a shame cause this looked so much fun...
I really wish microtransactions as a whole weren't a thing in games or at least they should be reasonable like in Fortnite
but it seems this game saids otherwise

Unfortunate case of a really great kart racer getting shafted by an overall lack of content. The actual racing is really fun and I love the visuals and music. But it just falls short when it comes to content.

I don't know if the multiplayer has gotten any less grindy since release but that was also a major sticking point for me.

Im so salty that i bought this pile of crap i felt like i got tricked paying full price for a nostalgia bait game only to be slapped in the face with a budget story campaign being my only thanks for buying this day 1. And now its no longer being supported. Shit like this makes me hate Square.

I'm currently working on a review of this for Cubed3, so I'm going to keep it brief: Chocobo GP has all of the needed parts to make a good kart racer—solid controls, cute characters, a nice budget—but it it fumbles them so hard that you can't help but feel sad.

Sometimes you just wanna make a fun kart racer and then Square Enix Square Enixes. Apparently it's gotten better? I was burned too hard to think about giving it another go, but maybe sometime I'll dip my head back in.

Gex is not in the roster. Cowards.
