Bought the Switch version while it was on sale, and discovered that I don't like Contra. I will not be returning to this collection, nor continuing on with any of its games.

This is a very solid collection of old-school Contra games.
I like that they went out of their way to include some of the European titles and most of the Japanese titles, so that's nice.

The Book of Contra is also a nice inclusion, and it gives us a Contra timeline, although I wonder how will that change with Operation Galuga coming out.

I am actually surprised that the arcade games and the Gameboy game were the ones I liked the most

mostly because I felt that Hard Corps and Alien Wars were too unfair; now, I do like hard games like Bloodborne or Crash 4, but when I lost with those games I felt like it was my fault, while with these ones it sometimes felt like they were just throwing random things without any warning

the only thing I disliked about the original and Super were the topdown levels, but aside from that they were decent actually

Buff shirtless dudes with headbands and machine guns; what else do you need to save the world? These games are all fun diversions despite their unforgiving difficulties (especially Contra III for SNES and Hard Corps for Genesis). They're at their best as classic side-scrollers, but they fall flat when they experiment with different viewpoints. The original Contra features pseudo z-axis corridor stages that feel like speed bumps to the main event, and Contra III's overhead Mode 7 stages are dizzying and unintuitive. The run-and-gun genre ultimately found better expression in Metal Slug and Treasure titles like GunStar Heroes.

It’s an ok collection. If you’re a fan of Contra or want a bit of nostalgia like the reason I bought this game, then this will scratch that itch. The quick save is a nice bonus. While there are 10 games in this collection, some of them are just different versions of the same game. Granted all these games are not extremely different from each other in the first place. I’d recommend getting this only if it’s on sale.

Not a comprehensive collection, and pretty light on the bells and whistles you get in a lot of retro collections; but a bunch of Contra is always great. Christ, though; I can’t believe I beat this multiple times as a kid.

This review doesn't have anything to do with the quality of each game, and I've actually reviewed them all separately on this site. This is more in regards to the collection itself and its presentation.

For the absolute bare minimum a port collection needs to be, it clears it perfectly well. This is the least I expect from M2, who are absolute porting wizards. I also appreciate the inclusion of the Japanese and European 'Probotector' versions of their respective games, as well as making said EU versions 60hz in order to make these games function the way they were supposed to. And as someone that doesn't agree with the notion of a rewind function being necessary for ports of 2D games, I'm perfectly satisfied without it. If I really want to practice a stage, the single save state they provide for each game is enough for me.

Regarding extras, it isn't anything groundbreaking, but the extensive interview with Nobuya Nakazato was greatly appreciated! He may not be the creator of Contra, but he IS the reason it evolved into an action-packed run-n-gun monster, being the director of Contra 3, Contra Hard Corps, and Contra Shattered Soldier! His insight and look back on these games was very refreshing, and I'm happy to see he's still active and thinking about Contra.

A complaint I have is the fact that Contra Hard Corps' controls weren't changed at all. I know it just takes getting used to, believe me. I've legitimately cleared the game multiple times with no save states. But it's hard when the majority of the games in this series are closest to Contra 3, a game that utilized a 6-button pad. M2 has been known to tweak and improve small things in the games they're porting/remastering, so I wish they were able to do something in that regard. Of course, it could be a deep level of programming I don't understand being the reason it wasn't possible under them. So I won't give them much flack.

One more complaint--and something I do find necessary for these collections--is the cover art. I think they should always bare a new cover art celebrating the history of whatever game it's a collection for, whether it be a new artist or previous returning. Instead, they just used the Tom DuBois piece from Contra 3's US cover. However, a new cover WAS made . . . for the Limited Run release. Fuck Limited Run. Thanks for reading.

An excellent collection that includes every Contra game from the 8 and 16 bit eras with the exception of Contra Force. Nothing bad to say about this one as far as I can tell; it has Contra III, NES Contra, a few other great Contra games, and those original arcade versions nobody likes.

Very neat collection even if at base it looks and offers the same amount of the Castlevania ones. But you'll get classics through 2 generations of videogames from 80s/90s.

My respects to anyone either at the time or now who has beaten any of the games on this collection without cheats or save states.

I think this is a really awesome collection, I do love how it has so many different games and different version of each, if you want to see my opinion on each game, I have them all the links to each are below. My favorite has to be Operation C.

A good collection of games, but could of used a better selection. Why are both arcade games inlcuded when they suck ass and arent worth there weight in sand. Contra rebirth, Contra 3 on gameboy, Contra GBA, Contra Force or Contra 4 should have been included. Still worth picking up if you want to play some truly good games. But the choice of games was questionable at best.

The games themselves are not bad. However, Konami does not cover itself with glory with this retro collection.
Apart from a quicksave function, a frame that I can put around the small game window and a few not so nice filters, there is nothing.

Capcom has shown how to do it right with the Mega Man Collections.
Besides some technical gimmicks like good looking filters and Rookie mode, there are also soundtracks, concept art and more in their collections.

Also, only five games are included instead of the advertised 10.
Contra three times, Super Contra, Contra 3 and Contra Hard Corps twice each and Operation C once.

Plus Contra games aren't that long. If you, like me, played them when you were younger, you might only need 30 to 45 minutes per game. Even if you are playing these games for the fist time, I don't think you will need more than an hour per game.

I payed 4€ when it was on sale and this price is more or less acceptable. 20€ as a regular price is not worth it!

Great collection. Shame that there's technically only 5 games here compared to the 8 in the other collections, but what's here is super solid nonetheless. Everything runs great too, except for III which has a couple extra frames of lag for some reason.

NES Contra, Super C and Hard Corps are all fantastic experiences. Operation C is pretty solid too. Not a fan of III but I assume this one's the selling point for most people. The Arcade versions of Contra and Super are neat novelties, but they're both admittedly pretty bad.
