Imagine handling one of the scariest and most infamous real-life mysteries ever and making it a generic Slenderman clone.

Boring walking sim snowy edition

I don't get why this game has so low ratings. The atmosphere is phenomenal, and the mysteries surrounding the mountain keep your attention till the very end.

I think I getting a taste for the so called "walking simulators".
Good game, cruelly underrated.

if i was rating this for other people, i'd just refuse to rate it, but since i'm rating it for myself i get to do whatever i want!!!!!!!

the instant i realized what type of game this was, with its huge open level design and no guidance of substance, and making me read a map without giving me video game map superpowers, i just opened up a walkthrough and followed that

it's honestly a beautiful game, although for some reason my beefy machine struggled on the highest settings, yikes, but i'm just so prone to getting lost and frustrated in these types fo games that i had to give up right away

i'm vaguely familiar with the incident this is based off of, thanks to a podcast that talked about it once, so that was a neat little connection to the real world, although i doubt there's any weird shadow people wandering the mountains out there

or...?!

I usually like walking sims but this one wasn't for me.

Didn't click for me. I enjoy walking simulators, but this just felt thoroughly meh. I spent "Act I" wandering aimlessly until I literally stumbled onto the plot, then Act II begins by giving you tools with no instruction. I then almost immediately died to something I was given no indication was actually a hazard. I love the concept of this game (I've always been fascinated by the Dyatlov Pass incident, even if it was likely caused by something mundane), but the actual execution did nothing for me.

The selling point of this game for me is having to rely on traditional tools for orientation in a hostile environment. I wish the game was more about that and just ditched the forgettable story and narration.
Also, the technical performance is crap.

Kholat takes full inspiration on 3 kind of genres that are in fashion nowaday, the walking simulators (very inspired by Dear Esther), first person horror stalking games (like Amnesia) and survival exploration games. Although it tries to do several different stuff and manages to be quite interesting in some aspects (fantastic atmosphere) it's more of a jack of all trades not exceling in any particular aspect.

Still, like I said the ambient is outstanding, plus, it has good visuals and an interesting story based on real life facts and left open to interpretation. Expect a few euro jank in the basic gameplay.
