A decent puzzle game that works better than it has any right being.

One of the best Pac-Man spinoffs.

[PAC-MAN Museum+ 6/14]

A pretty solid and unique falling-block puzzle game in the vein of Puyo Puyo and Tetris. Kind of feels like it has both a bit of Puyo DNA and a bit of Tetris DNA at the same time.

The presentation is pretty solid - I especially like how expressive and lively the ghosts' animations are - and the mechanics are pretty novel. They really managed to make the PAC-MAN elements feel natural in this game, even though they technically just Mean Bean Machined an existing arcade puzzle game here. There's even a really neat puzzle mode in here if you want some fun brainteasers to solve.

If I had to criticize anything, it's that the higher difficulties are way too hard for their own good, and just aren't all too fun, and that there's not a ton to sink your teeth into here; just three game modes and that's it. Other than that, though? Pretty solid effort all around, and one I'm glad I got the chance to play thanks to Museum+.

Puzzle Mode Cleared on July 7th, 2023 (SEGA Genesis Challenge: 20/160)

Pac-Attack is a game that I recalled playing through Pac Man World 2 a long time ago, but I never really understood how the game worked. I kinda get the basics. I knew that Pac-Man ate the ghosts, but lining them up was confusing and I didn't last longer than maybe 2 minutes. But now that I revisited the game and was able to better pick up on the mechanic, I honestly like this just as much as I do Tetris.

Obviously you have blocks you need to line up as you traditionally do in Tetris, but the twist is that there are these ghosts that will obstruct you as you line them up. However, you can position where they will go so that when you get a Pac-Man piece, you can have him take the ghosts down. This creates more complexity compared to Tetris and really gets you thinking.

There are two modes you can do which include Normal and Puzzle mode. Normal is about what you'd expect from Tetris. Survive long enough to get the high score and don't let the blocks stack too high, but Puzzle is a little more interesting. So you have a limited number of Pac-Mans to use in a preset level. When all the ghosts are cleared, you move on to the next level. There are 100 levels in the game and they get really tricky. Just know that unlike in Normal mode, you can switch whatever direction Pac-Man is facing.

July 7th Update: I managed to finish Puzzle Mode clearing all 100 levels, and I can say that while it may be seem easy enough once you learn a few techniques, it really does get hard once you reach the second half and sometimes it feels like they're deliberately giving you the worst puzzle piece you could ask for to screw over whatever plan you might have. Nevertheless, it makes for a really good challenge.

Another thing I want to call attention to is the Presentation which includes graphics, sound, and music. Now there are two versions of the game being the Genesis and the Super Nintendo. I decided to play both and the Super Nintendo version is better. The Genesis version isn't bad, but I feel as if its inferior given its capabilities. But it still functions all the same.

Anyway you put it, Pac-Attack is really fun. If you own any Namco compilations, there's a chance you might have it. Heck, if you have Pac-Man World 2, you can access the Namco Anthology remake which plays about the same.

A strange mixture of Pac-Man and 3 block Tetris that somehow works. Its gameplay asks the player to get as many points as possible by placing ghosts in a way Pac-Man can then follow a path to eat them. There's also a puzzle mode that tests your placing abilities by limiting the number of turns you have to eat them all. Also, the music is charming but sadly there are quite a bunch of quality of life features missing, such as a restart button, that ask for a much needed and overdue remake.

This game is actually pretty good especially the puzzle mode feature which I enjoyed more than I thought. The puzzle mechanics are unique enough to make it standout and I could see myself returning to this. This is actually a "good" pac man spinoff.

I was expecting a shitty game but this is actually pretty fun!

I love puzzle games tetris-like, this one is not as good as others like Kirby's Avalanche or Pokemon Puzzle League but still fun.

Played through Pac-Man Collection.

Actually a pretty good time. Most likely won't come back to it, but it was neat.

This game legit rocks. It's underrated as a puzzle game yo

I feel like Pac-Attack is really underrated. It's one of those Pac-Man games that gets really overlooked simply because it's not Pac Man or Ms. Pac Man. Probably even more because it's not even one of those maze games, but something a little closer to Tetris or Puyo Puyo. It's honestly a really chill experience playing this. It's easy to just turn your brain off and keep going for a solid half-hour game, and there's lots of fun to have there. I'd also say the skill ceiling can be pretty high, as the ghosts add a lot to that. That's about all I can really think of saying here. It's just a really solid puzzle game, one that I recommend picking up (should be really cheap, and it's on the Pac Man Collection on steam, and the old one on 360 if you happen to still have it like I do).

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YEAAAAH this game is neat as hell. The like, levels mode is super fun. It's not a very crazy game but its a swell time with fun, very Pac-Man-esque puzzle mechanics.

It's a basic and mediocre puzzle game with a Pac-Man skin. Why play this over something like Tetris?

Playing Through My Evercade Collection Part 6: Namco vol 2

Eh. I do like puzzle games I swear but this doesn't do a lot for me. The standard survival 1 player puzzle mode is a bit on the drab side with not much going on and while the puzzle mode has some neat elements to it, I feel I could do just as well playing Columns and I usually dont care for Columns at all.

clunky, but when you hit that sweet spot once you get em all lined up? once you blonk around? yerp

This game is probably one of my favorite puzzle games I've ever played. Seriously. It's THAT damn good. To the point, it might have actually made me addicted. (It didn't lie on the SNES box art that it was "highly addictive" lol)
Now, I may be overexaggerating, but I've put so many hours on many versions of Pac-Attack. The SNES, Game Boy, Game Gear and especially the version on Pac-Man World 2 (shoutouts to the wonderful soundtrack, absolutely great stuff), but the Genesis version is my go-to version for me. The toe-tapping soundtrack, great graphics, the Normal and Puzzle Modes offer their own challenges that has me coming back constantly to beat my PB. And it helps the fact that I'm already a big fan of Tetris. This game has a Tetris type gimmick but with a Pac-Man twist to it.
I'm so glad Bandai Namco put this game in Pac-Man Museum+, so players both old and new can experience this gem of a puzzle game.

Laughs in Pac Man World 2 extras

Jogado no Pac-Man Museum+. É mais uma variação de Tetris, tentando encaixar elementos de Pac-Man. Funciona, mas não me agradou e divertiu o suficiente pra continuar jogando.

Another cool take on Pac-Man in a different genre, and another underrated puzzler.

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

the ghosts' game-over animations used to scare me as a kid

easy to learn, fun in multiplayer and has a very lengthy puzzle mode. one of the few games on snes and genesis that's both good and inexpensive.

Pac-Attack's gimmick and twist on the Tetris-like genre that was booming at the time is intriguing, and even fun. But something about the mechanics is more restricting and daunting than welcoming. I can't help but feel a similar implementation with Puyo Puyo-like physics instead of trying to read Pac-Man's movement behavior would offer something similar, and better.
