There's so much I can say about this game, but I'll keep it incredibly brief; this is one of the very few fighting games out there where I legitimately wanted to put the time into learning its entire roster.
Picked up the original game in around 2013, moved on to PS2 UM a few years later, and still playing now ever since the rollback update. I'm three characters away from being able to reliably win with random select.
I don't think I'll ever feel any less bad about being so late to appreciating SNK's games.

One of my favorites and one of the best old-school fighting games out there, definitely the best old-school KOF game due to the large roster and gameplay improvements over older KOF games. While this is not the best port out there (if you're looking for online fighting only don't even bother, the netcode in this game is crap) it still provides a solid fighting game with excellent sprite artwork at a good price (this game goes on sale fairly often).
If you are looking for nostalgia, quality and replay value this is the masterpiece you are looking for.
It's the only KOF game that gives you the feeling of a tournament as it's shown that the matches are being broadcasted and the audience are cheering. Also, I miss the other teammates cheering or getting frustrated in the background which is missing from the later KOF games. Also, Rugal is scarier that other bosses. To most of the KOF fans KOF XIII is the best one but to me KOF 98 is the best KOF game

Why tighten up the controllers? Only because this is a classic arcade game doesn't mean everboy will play with an arcade stick. The joystick controls are too tight which increases dificulty for nothing. The salvation here is the addition of KOF 96 character roster. You will be more satisfied playing other versions of this game.
