I already really liked Gwent in Witcher 3, so I was really looking forward to this standalone Gwent game. All in all, I really enjoyed it. I was surprised at how much the game focused on the story and characters, both of which are very well written. I didn't expect characters from this card game like Gascon to really grow on me. Sure, the main story is the classic "Nilfgaard is evil and attacks the North" that you know from the games, books and the series, but the dialogue and individual events are really well written.

The card game itself is also a lot of fun. Its complexity has been greatly increased compared to Witcher 3 and it never gets boring. Some of the puzzle battles are also quite innovative or simply very funny (without spoiling anything: "exploding cows"...if you know you know^^).

Unfortunately, I found the pacing very slow. It took me almost 40 hours for my first run and almost half of it could be cut without really losing anything in quality. You can of course ignore all the optional content, but I like to do everything. It would have been nice if the optional stuff had been consistently good or if there had simply been less content overall. That being said, the scenarios were very varied, at least from chapter 3 onwards, and I really liked Mahakam.

So for fans of Gwent and the Witcher world itself I would definitely recommend it but be prepared for a longer gaming experience than I expected. FOR LYRIA!!!!

Bom demais, pena que não terá continuação

A longer game than you expect, especially if you adopt the "clear all map markers" approach that I feel the icon-filled map encourages you to take. Its main and side stories were strong enough to keep me playing on account of strong writing, voice acting and difficult choices.

However, Gwent (the card battles) can become quite stale. The game doesn't incentivise much deck-building. Personally, I chose my playstyle quite early and the remaining 30 or so hours just involved slight refinements as I swapped and upgraded cards. Thus, standard best-of-three round battles felt quite repetitive by the end of the game. On the other hand, puzzle battles were typically fresh and encourage the player to think about some cards in a new way.

Finally, its writing sometimes stumbles when positioning the player to make a choice. There can be a dissonance between the choice made and the tone/wording of the actual dialogue that can lead to an outcome that the player may not have intended.

Ultimately, the presentation and story is absolutely strong enough to keep you playing to completion, but don't expect the card battles to remain wholly interesting (possibly experimenting with difficulty in either direction could mitigate this?).

Very competent RPG built on a solid card game and adequate writing

Witcher franchise just can't miss

When CDPR announced a new Witcher game, I was disappointed to find out it was a card game. I simply hate card games! However, after reading a couple of reviews and watching gameplay, it turned out to not be a typical card game so I decided to once again support CDPR.

No regrets! The art style is phenomenal. The gameplay - is addictive and fun to learn. A lot of the Gwent fans criticize it for being too easy but that's certainly not true for people new to this genre. I beat the game on the medium difficulty but I have to admit - I read a lot of guides. Liked the idea of the puzzles.

Most importantly - Thronebreaker gives the fans of the books even more depth to the Witcher lore, particularly events and characters. For the hours you get, it's worth the price. It was also very satisfying to finish all the achievements.

Still not a big fan of card games. The production values are pretty low.

A whole game based on a mini game in another game. Gwent Pro Max

-The gameplay is either running around in the map or playing a match of Gwent. In the map(s), you have to go to a specific point to continue the story but you can wander around in there to find some resource or fight some monsters. And the fighting is just Gwent; sometimes you only need to win one set, sometimes you need to win two. There are also some puzzles in the game for when you encounter some monsters; there is even a match-three Gwent game. I gotta say, Gwent is a great mini game but it gets really boring when you have to play it constantly,

-The visuals are stunning. The environment is very much like a comic book; so is the design of the characters and cards. The only game I can think of with the same approach to art direction, is Hades. I prefer this one though...

-The Story is amazing; like every other Witcher game. You play as queen Meve who is one of the rulers in the north of the Continent. Nilfgaard is invading the north and you have to overcome the obstacles in your way to defend your realm. Your choices are very important in the story. You might find or lose a companion with every choice; although they won't effect the fact that you are going to defeat the Nilfgaardian empire.

-The music and voice acting is fantastic. The music is mostly Witcher 3's, recycled. And the voice acting, fantastic. Every line is delivered with the right amount of emotion; and the narrating method of telling the story makes it sound like an audio book.

-The level design is pretty alright. The paths are clear and obvious. You go down a path, which either leads to another path or leads to nowhere.

A decent spin off to a great franchise. Overall I think it's worth one playthrough, but I don't think I'll get back to it again. As eye catching the art design, and as intriguing the story, the gameplay just can't hold up.

Another CDPR creation, a wonderful addition to the main story of the Witcher universe. Excellent visuals, sound, puzzles and story. I wish there were more games like this, thank you.

Thronebreaker is a fantastic addition to the Witcher games, its characters and story hitting the mark once more, but it has some rather large flaws that I cannot ignore. Many of the decisions found in this game (seem like they) are almost 50/50 coinflips whether they will backfire as you are given quite little background information on which you can base your decision. While this is fine occasionally, when the dominant form of "choices" are these kinds of coinflips the (thought given to a) decision can start to feel rather superfluous. However, my main criticism is unfortunately in regards to the core gameplay. A card game should have many different builds you'd want to experiment with or swap between but here I found myself using the same Blitz spam that was effective in the early game for all 27 hours that I played as it remained easily the best strategy the whole way through (this might be less of an issue on the highest difficulty, or perhaps it is even more of a necessity?). I think the main culprit is the insane power levels for the average card. People tend to think that when everything is overpowered, nothing is; but, it really just means that whichever strategy is easiest to set up is the clear best: That strategy is spamming Blitz cards.

A story-driven card game that is not roguelite, just what I've been looking for.

ironically the best way to experience this game is to play on the easiest mode and skip most battles

great story and character development. interesting gameplay. the one thing is that the game gets too long but it depends on your type of playthrough so i'd recommend not to explore much so it'll stay more interesting in terms of gameplay and story progression.

This blew me away. The amount of “game” this has is honestly very surprising. They chose an interesting but overlooked character from the books and developed an epic tale that you play… with cards. Like, what? But it works! And then, somehow, successfully recreated the open world RPG feel of the Witcher games with an isometric view and a very limited amount of interactions. It’s a great accomplishment.

It’s weird to feel like an AAA game is a work of passion, not because there aren’t passionate devs working on those but because of the scope and financial pressure those projects have. Thronebreaker is absolutely a passion project with great writing, amazing art and a lot of attention to detail. Loved it!

Geralt is too prominent in promotion compared to his actual presence ingame.
Story is great.
Meve isn't the most compelling protagonist.
Game turns into a restart fest to get certain starting hands once you get late into the game (at least on hardest difficulty).

Plusy: wciągająca i solidna historia, bardzo ładna grafika, niezły gameplay, spora zawartość
Minusy: pierwszy akt, w gruncie rzeczy bezsensowne bieganie po mapie, rozwój obozu

tried at the recommendation of a friend. unfortunately i dont like card games! cant get my head around it and am just not enjoying it. the voice acting is good and the art style is lovely. im sure the story is good although i didnt get very far in at all. some tedious aspects about navigating the world and being able to click through some dialogue but not all of it? oh well

I wish there was less gwent in my gwent game
(seriously though, I think cdpr overestimates how much people who will buy a single player campaign of a card game they could play for free like said card game. I'm here for the story and characters, please delve deeper into them, I feel like I've barely scratched the surface, especially with the characters!)

i like single player card games :)
