Both a parody and a love letter to the two “Metal Gear” games, although the OTT voice acting clearly roots to the first “Metal Gear Solid” as well. The goofy humor somewhat reminded me of Mel Brooks’ spoofs. Although it’s surprisingly fun at the beginning, I ended up feeling slightly exhausted by the end. Each chapter provides diversified gameplay without repeating the stealth dynamics too much, but there are also a few areas and bosses that required so many tries that it ended up breaking the pacing a little. It was also tedious to be forced to heal the guards after shooting them, as you cannot kill anyone in the game. A more compact experience could have left a much stronger impression, preserving the initial enjoyment without succumbing to frustration. Despite these drawbacks, “Unmetal” still manages to deliver a worthy experience for fans of the genre.
A very fun parody of classic metal gear games. Fans of the saga will get many witty nods and references to the original material.
Gameplay is pretty solid, with several options for neutralising enemies. You can't kill them, so any time you fatally wound them (say, with a pistol), you have to usa one of your first-ait kits on them, thus wasting a healing item. I find that balances the efficiency of lethal weapons. You also have a non-lethal slingshot, and chloroform (which requires you to sneak up on enemies from behind).
The levels are susprisingly distinct and diverse and the bosses, being true to the source material, are completely wacky design-wise. Not all of them are fun to fight, though. In fact, I find that sometimes the quirkyness and humour of this game get in the way of gameplay.
Still, it is a pretty fun little game, especially for fans of Metal Gear.

I have some mixed feelings about this game; I adore the goofy tone it has, I really liked the story and how it's written, Jesse Fox is a pretty fun and memorable character, and every chapter feel distinguishable enough from one to another, but the major problem of this game is the combat, more especifically the boss battles. There are LOTS of them, sometimes even more than one per chapter and it gets tiring granted most of them, if not every single one, rely on trial and error, meaning there's a high chance you'll die repeatedly, and it wouldn't be too infuriating if the game dropped you at the start of the battle, which it sometimes does, but when it doesn't it's such a pain in the ass to keep dying and then make all your way back to the boss battle.
If it weren't for the so badly designed boss battles I would've rated this game higher, but they're so painful to play that I despise them and they can make someone abandon the game immediately. Tho if you can get over that, there's a fun and memorable game underneath that surface, because everything else oozes charisma and the rest of the game plays pretty well.

This is a gem I don’t see anybody speaks about. It’s clearly based off of Metal Gear, but it has enough uniqueness and a completely different approach that it feels different. Rather than being serious, this game tries to be comedic and it does it in such an enjoyable way that I’m constantly reminded of it. This game gets cheap very frequently, I can’t stop recommending it because of how unique it really is.
Sights & Sounds
- As the title implies, this is a love letter to old school 2D stealth action games. Hell, the main character even looks like Solid Snake
- It's got the pixel art to match those old games, though it does look considerably nicer than either Metal Gear or Snake's Revenge on the NES
- The music is pretty good (especially during the boss fights), but the best part of this game's audio is the voice acting. The performances were really well done all around, especially Jesse Fox and The Colonel
Story & Vibes
- The story isn't anything new for the genre. You've been imprisoned for a crime you didn't commit. In trying to escape, you find that the organization keeping you hostage is building some sort of weapon. You've got to stop the bad guys and get out. This should all sound very familiar
- That stereotypical narrative is spun out into a pretty funny frame story where the main character is trying to impress a date, at least
- The dialogue is hilarious. I was consistently chuckling to myself the whole time
- Even though it's a parody of the early days of the Metal Gear franchise, it's all done in a pretty friendly way. It does a good job poking fun at the silliness of those plotlines and their overly serious tones without stooping to outright ridicule
Playability & Replayability
- If you ever played a top-down stealth action game from the NES era, this is basically the same thing. Gather weapons and tools, sneak around, knock out guards, and try to avoid open firefights unless it's a boss
- There's a few other quirks beyond that usual formula (like having to stabilize guards after shooting them since you promised the hot doctor you wouldn't kill anyone), but the mechanics are pretty easy to get the hang of
- I wish the bosses had been a little more creative. The final boss is pretty cool, but the bosses leading up to it are kinda forgettable
- If I do wind up replaying this game someday, it'll probably be for the humor more than the story
Overall Impressions & Performance
- I wasn't expecting this game to be as entertaining as it was. It was a very enjoyable throughout its entire 10-ish hours
- This was an excellent Steam Deck game. Pretty easy to pick up and put down whenever, but I didn't really want to put it down
Final Verdict
- 8.5/10. A genuinely funny game with some solid 2D stealth gameplay. In many ways, it doesn't feel like a new experience, but it's just so entertaining that I didn't really mind

This game was surprisingly funny. I liked the way the story is told through the interrogation of Jesse Fox, and the scenarios get more silly and challenging as he exaggerates his experience. I also like that it lets you choose dialogue and what the scenarios are throughout the game. It makes a very basic stealth game parody story more unique, because I can make small choices as the game goes along.
The gameplay is pretty good as well. It reminds me of what the first two games felt like when I played them as a kid, but much smoother. I wish more games had this style of stealth gameplay.
