10/10 music, 10/10 art and 10/10 story hitting all the emotions (contains a bunch of short stories,a general storyline AND a secret central plotline, besides some of the voice acting is even pretty nice!).

The only 60 hours long RPG I played twice in a row because it's just that good ( and because the hard mode and extra ending changes a bunch of the content!)
Absolute masterpiece.

Fun fact: Whenever someone punches me IRL there is a 30% chance I say "Hhmnmhnot bad!" in a Lezard Valeth voice before running away (with that said, this character is a horrible creep).

In a very PS1 fashion way, this game is unique, for good and for bad.

The good:
>Battle system is very original, the real time combo system is fun and kind of deep if played in Hard.
>NO RANDOM ENCOUNTERS... In a PS1 JRPG! That's really awesome.
>Dungeons again, very original, you explore them like a 2D platformer. They look great, lot of different themes, labyrinthine design and full of puzzles and without holding hands.
>20+ character to choose, each with a unique move set and unique Finisher attack. Tho I would have preferred less characters but with more evolution to them, like a 4th move or a 2nd Finisher when reaching certain level.
>Good blend of 2D sprites with 3D light effects.
>Beautiful art design.

The Bad:
>Like most JRPG of this generation, the game is quite slow; mandatory dialogues, no cutscene skip, etc.
>There is no visual change on characters; armors or weapons does not reflect on the battles, not even on effects, like fire or ice damage.
>As good as dungeons are, the towns feels useless, there is close to nothing to do on them. Go there, get the Einherjar, get out.
>The World map is pointless.
>The Story seems good but it get nowhere, it's like everything got cut at the end, also VERY ANTICLIMATIC Ending, i know there's a secret Ending, but the normal ending should feel like and Ending.

I feel the game is good but overstay it welcome.

It's sooooo goooood, and I wanna recommend it soooo baaaaaaad.

It has my favorite battle system of any JRPG, with fighting game/beat-em-up influence, Motoi Sakuraba was going crazy on the soundtrack, and the characters/world/story were very cool and unique in my opinion.

But the game has a lot of mechanics and ideas that I haven't seen very often, and which you may not understand on your own. Stuff like how to fulfill certain requests Freya gives you, or what certain items and skills are for. The game tells you enough that you'll feel dumb for not getting it, once you understand it. But for me at least, it wasn't enough to actually get it while playing through.

Without spoiling story, there are also multiple endings, but only 1 of them is the full and satisfying conclusion. The requirements to unlock it are specific, and you'll be working on it as you progress through the game. So unless you're willing to play the whole game again after inevitably getting a different ending? You'll want to read the Gamefaqs "best ending guide"

With that said, based on developer interviews, this kind of game design seems intended. For someone willing to dedicate that kind of time: The game may prove a really satisfying and fascinating gift that won't stop giving. Whether you choose to use FAQ's and aim for the best ending, or go in blind as was intended, I hope you'll at least try it. It's a great game.

DO NOT PLAY ON EASY MODE! You get less content to play through, and are not able to get the true ending at all. Just play on Hard mode for the full experience.

Amazing JRPG, couldn't put it down the moment I picked it up. Need to go back and revisit it.

genuine masterpiece. the game is crafted in such a way that it forces you to learn its mechanics while simultaneously letting you absolutely snap it in half if you know what you’re doing. the story, characters and environments are also peak in their own unique way. this is a must play for any JRPG lover out there, and the PSP port is also available on PS4 and PS5. while the game does definitely have its flaws, i had way too much fun playing it to really mind them.

Stole music from The Last Promise (actually good game)

i am gonna be so annoying about this game

Beaten on hard mode. This is definitely a game I had lots of fun with overall and will remember the highs of the story for years to come, while also having enough little things nag me for it to be a one and done.

Let's start with the audio. I expected a literal 4Kids dub to be the most obnoxious shit ever, but to my surprise the direction is fucking cool tbh?! VAs are allowed to swear like sailors left and right, some performances actually sound legit (it really sounded like Lenneth was crying I swear) and yeah it's a cheesy ass dub but it's also the kind of charming dub you wouldn't hear nowadays. The final dragon for example sounds completely emotionless while a filter was added over his voice to compensate for it. There's also an undub but I wouldn't rec it unless you know Japanese since things like the world map visions and battle quotes aren't translated. If any performance deserves special mention, it's Lezard's VA for chewing up the scenery while switching between high pitched and low pitched deliveries when appropriate, a surprisingly memorable role (slight spoilers for the postgame in this link) https://youtu.be/n4zcE8rOW7A

The music in this game is really good. The melodies for boss battles and even regular themes are chaotic enough to make it sound as if Asgard itself is stirring https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uid2tHimbrs
The dungeon themes too convey great feelings of mystery while just being plain catchy, to the point I had to put my controller down and just listen at times https://youtu.be/bYTZjzG-jlA

My main complaint isn't even the inconsistency of the voice acting (it swaps between straightup cheese to surprisingly emotional but it's not a huge deal imo) but moreso the amount of music. The tracks are great, but there isn't enough to spread around for a 30 or so hour hard mode campaign. Even the final cutscenes in the game were still using basic tracks I'd heard a million times beforehand. It's probably one of the big reasons why I took so many sessions to finish it.

Enough about the audio, what about the combat? The battle flow is truly one of a kind, a light mix of action RPG elements with turn-BASED RPGs. Being able to combo enemies and even react with counterattacks depending on the setup is legit really cool. Mages being able to attack with bird familiars for combos extensions while recharging their mana pool is a great way to balance them since they hit like trucks compared to Lenneth and her melee warriors. When the battles flow, they flow. There's even plenty of options to avoid enemies like using pendants or freezing them.

The platforming and puzzles range from "ok enough" to "fuckawful" ngl. Crystal hopping can be rather fun and it's neat the dust allows the player to float higher than usual if a crystal shard is destroyed from above. Sadly, too many areas of the game have tight jumps often coupled with enemies waiting around the corner and it's not really what I went into the game for.

Normal mode dungeons are solvable enough but hard mode dungeons are rather garbage. The Arianrod dungeon for example has 25 different rooms that have teleport paths and just straightup require a guide. Perhaps it's my fault for doing the entirety of hard mode for the sake of 100%ing it but I didn't leave with a super fond impression of the dungeons.

I will say the hard mode, while ironically easier than the normal mode (to the point I spent the latter half of the game just spamming the attack button and killing everyone with shiho/nanami's ultimate attacks) due to granting the player so many extra tools, was actually something I dug. Too often, hard modes in video games are little more than damage table adjustments that turn the games into drags. Valkyrie Profile going as far as to have loads of new content in the form of dungeons along with bonus items and slower level ups... it's not Ninja Gaiden Black levels of "holy shit cool difficulty selection" but it's certainly one that had a lot of effort and for that I have immense respect and am glad I played it.

Even playing with a guide and screenshotting item pickups, I felt the game's sheer amount of chore mechanics turned it into something I never want to play ever again. To get the good ending or even play competently, the player must raise a bunch of levels and hero points for various heroes to send to valhalla, level up traits such as autoheal skills with hilariously unbalanced combinations of skills, give every party member sets of like 8 different accessories, constantly craft, constantly look up which items transmute to which, keep track of Valkyrie's seal level, etc. There's simply too much micromanaging in between the fun battles for me to find it a marathon worthy or replayable game. Even if god damn, those battle animations are really cool. The PS1 can produce mind boggling effects after all https://youtu.be/t8V_Ezr5fCU?t=60

In fact, the sheer amount of great magic animations in the battles, many of which are never to be seen by most players, is really rad. Even the party member who joins for a single fight has an elaborate finishing strike https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1047361410671321181/1136820460391235655/Valkyrie_Profile_USA_2023-08-03_20-36-27.mp4

The visuals in general are stunning. The 3D is mixed to create depth in a 2.5D game quite well, with the pixel art and portraits of the characters being huge highlights of course. There isn't much to be said about the timeless visuals of 2D JRPG artstyles that hasn't been said before, so I want to give special shoutout to just... the little things. Lenneth has unique sprites for all sorts of moments that even go through sprite scaling through the game's quite masterful camera, with one of my favourite out of context caps being this one https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1047361410671321181/1136823216543899748/image.png

Heck even the intro is chock full of it https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/827002109807034388/1015076545209049189/slap.gif

The anime FMVs are cool as well, spaced out as they are. If I had to rec either the PS1 or PSP version, I dare say the timelessness of the FMVs on PS1 may very well be one of my main reasons for reccing the PS1 edition (plus, you know, the QOL extras) https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1047361410671321181/1136834645867122718/image.png

The rather dull character portraits also set a great tone for the game's crapsack world, and they too have moments like this where multiple unique portrait poses are drawn for one line of dialogue which truly keeps the experience fresh https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1047361410671321181/1136815114662723735/image.png

And of course, that brings me to the main reason to play the game which is the story. It's unusual to find a story so outright grimdark like VP's, without feeling totally depressed the whole time. Yeah, it's the only video game in existence where you can point out every character dies and it's not even a spoiler, but Lenneth's girlbossy attitude, the Guts wannabe just aggressively wearing inspiration on his sleeve to the point he gets a sword called Dragonslayer, or Lezard's unhinged nature always kept me smiling even in the darkest of times. I don't want to give away too much about the story since the sense of mystery or wonder around how everyone's death affected those around them is so interesting. So, have some cool highlights I screencapped.

tldr Even with a huge amount of flaws and chore mechanics, Valkyrie Profile's highs are so high that I can say it is an epic game full of unforgettable moments with plenty of fun to be had with the unique combo-heavy battle system, and some of the most charming bombastic music to compliment the masterfully varied pixel art + 3D hybrid world. I easily rec doing a single playthrough on hard mode with a guide on the PS1 version.

an enjoyable somber rpg where the game doesn't tell you jack shit about it

it's not hard by any means but it would've been nice to at least know the basic mechanics of the game

good luck getting ending A by yourself

A gameplay é definitivamente a melhor parte.

I won't be rating this game because I don't want to come at it from any serious point of judgement. My issues with it are entirely personal, coming from a point of preference. The music, character designs, and combat are all to die for. This game, without question, is a must play. I love everything about this game -- except the dungeons.

The platforming is incredibly frustrating and flimsy, all the while the dungeons hide doors and pathways from you. This could be seen as a positive, but it happens in ways that can't be interfaced with by standard means of game play. If you don't pick up on a slight shadow in the corner of the room, you will be running in circles. Finally, an attempt at a puzzle in the 2D space was what took all the wind out of my sails.

I'll be playing the sequels and returning to this one if any of those strike my fancy.

Wonderful little game.

Going into it I was surprised at how little story it has, instead mostly just focused on bite-sized short stories for your recruitable characters and an undercooked overarching plot with the whole ragnarok thing.

This wasn't an issue for me however, as I'm a huge fan of Tri-Ace's habit of having games with tons of recruitable funny little guys with not much depth to their story yet they always end up being oddly charming right out of the gate. Sure characters aren't developed that much, but I grew pretty attached to a bunch of the characters I recruited and used them over the 'main' story characters. Specifically, I beat the game with Aelia, Suou, and Yumei in my party.

The battle system is probably the most striking aspect of this game and I have to say I fell in love with the battle system and would love to see more games done in this style. It was always so satisfying getting all your allies to combo and air juggle enemies.

Pretty good, but definitely dated in several aspects.
Great atmospheric ost though, and an interesting take on turn-based rpgs.

I tried to play this, but it's just not possible for me. I don't understand the combat system at all -- it's mostly a joke in terms of providing difficulty. Even on Hard mode. I really don't know why anything is happening or what I should be doing in response. I just press buttons and succeed -- though I don't even know what my reward is for winning.

I also don't understand the systems regarding recruiting characters or why I want to or don't want to do certain things with them.

Looks really good though...

this 9 to 5 doesn't pay me well enough to go through the Mouth Dungeon

What an absolutely unique experience this game was. From the button-specific combat, to the unique exploration of the overworld, to the sharply poignant character vignettes, this game felt like something truly special to play. The story also felt unique, as you don't often see Nordic themes expressed so heavily in an RPG. The dungeon design was pretty terrible, and it practically required a guide to find your way around and take full advantage of the gameplay, but I kept feeling excited to jump back into this one every time until I beat it. Very, very good game with some minor quibbles that I would absolutely recommend anyone to at least give a try.

The comabt mechanics are so goooood man.
Gotta say magic are really overpowered, making the game a little bit too easy

It seems so cool, I just don't get how to play it?

To my side, my noble Einherjar!
Come to me, dark warriors! Battle awaits us!

Really interesting game. I think I appreciate it for being experimental a bit more than actually playing it

It was pretty frustrating having to use a guide to get the best ending, and some of the dungeons are more irritating than anything else. I also think the game has some issues with difficulty scaling

But you won’t find another game that’s really like this, and the atmosphere is so unique with its vignettes

NIBELUUUUUUUNG VALESTIIIIIIIIIIIIII
