This was my first experience with DKC, good version.

I prefer this over the SNES original for it's quality of life improvements, like being able to save anywhere and the life count doesn't reset after shutting the game off. The boss fights are also improved.

That being said, this is still Donkey Kong Country, which means it still inherits some issues from the original. While some bonus barrels are now clearly visible, some stuff remains cryptic. Ropey Rampage still features that offscreen barrel that leads to the bonus room, and the bonus within bonus in Oil Drum Alley is still the worst. The game is still frustrating at times, with some trial and error. Not only that, this remake adds its own issues. A little bit of screen crunch is probably expected, but my issue is the new collectible required for the completion: the photos. Some of them are just lying around, but most of them you get by destroying certain enemies in a certain way, but it's not clear which enemies and in what way you're supposed to defeat to get the photos. This is something DKC2GBA improves upon, by having certain enemies have a photo float over them and defeating them will give you said photos, and the game also offers in-game hints on where to find them. I had to whip out a video playthrough to find obscure bonuses, but I still have to find some of those photos, which is why I haven't 101%ed it yet (now I did, but I had to whip out an official guide, I wouldn't have figured out that, for example, you have to clear all levels in a world as Diddy or Donkey gives a respective photo).

That being said though, I still had some enjoyment playing this game, but it didn't age as well as the later entries. If you didn't enjoy original Donkey Kong Country, you won't enjoy this remake, but if you did, then I can highly recommend this one. It'll still provide you with decent time.

I feel like the SNES version is still the way to experience the game- it's much better looking and the music is much better. That being said, the remake makes some fun changes, and for a longtime player of the original- I appreciated everything new in the package.

Okay version of a great game, but looks extremely muddy on the gba's screen

Holy crap... Yes. This game, belive it or not, was a huge part of my childhood. This one, I definitely remember receiving for my ninth birthday... From my uncle. He also got me the strategy guide with it, which I still have to this day. I played the crap out of this little game on my GBA, and I almost beat it too. I still feel really bad for selling off my original copy of it...

A very fun, challenging (but not unfair) platformer. The fact it's DK and a lot of characters are based on animals of the jungle gives it its own identity.

TARARIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII TARIROOOOOOOOOO TARIRIRIIIIIIIIIIIIII

I had this and DKC2 on GBA as a kid, never beat either but I remember having fun with them with being my earliest exposure to Donkey Kong. I'm an adult now, and I'm happy to say the GBA remake of DKC1 still holds up very well today.

I'd arguably say I'd put it slightly above the original just for the improvements to the control, DK's speed being increased, and the tweaks to the bosses to make them a bit more challenging. Despite those positives I do like both versions about the same anyhow. The GBA renditions of the OST were nice to hear too.

My main gripe (and it does affect the original too) is the verticality of the camera being a bit jank sometimes with not seeing whats above or below you.

Overall, still absolutely worth playing!

Surprisingly it's a very good version of Donkey Kong Country, I admire how Rare preferred to sacrifice graphics in order to keep the gameplay at its best level, since the field of view was not reduced, instead all the sprites were shrunk, which makes the image quality poor compared to the original SNES version, but instead, this Game Boy Advance version doesn't have the problems that other SNES ports do have by reducing the field of view, such as causing you can't see where you're going to fall or you can't see enemies outside the screen.

It's been very gratifying to play this version to be honest, the character controller has been altered a bit, making the characters feel a bit more nimble and light. This depends on taste, but personally, I think I prefer the way this version plays over the original. There are also a couple of other improvements, such as the fact that each boss has a tiny tweak or two that makes them a bit more interesting. Some barrels leading to the bonus rooms are now easier to see, which makes this part of the game feel more natural in a way. There is also the addition of a new collectible which is photos, which adds more replay value, but I don't quite like it, as there are a lot of photos that you get by doing very specific actions, rather than being hidden in the normal way in the levels.

There are also some quality of life improvements, such as the fact that you can save your game at any time (which makes the life counter no longer matter), and 2 mini-games and a Crash Bandicoot-like time trial mode were added, which I thought was a great addition. One thing that makes this version feel odd, though, is that there are certain new sprites that don't match the originals, making the game look weird at times.

Conclusion
I don't consider myself the biggest fan of DKC, but they are games that I have a lot of respect for because of how influential they were and the excellent atmosphere they have thanks to their mind-blowing soundtrack and revolutionary graphics for the time. Having said that... as this is a version with a paled color palette, compressed audio and graphics, it obviously loses a bit of what makes the original SNES Donkey Kong Country so special. However, don't get me wrong, this is a great platformer, it has an interesting level design that makes each level feel different from the others and is challenging without being really unfair, making DKC a game with variety, and more importantly, makes this a version worth playing despite the poorer audio and visual quality.

If you are a big fan of the first Donkey Kong Country, I highly recommend trying this version.

Apparently this port is meh. Kid me didn't know that.

Yep, it's Donkey Kong Country but with more stuff.
Fun platforming, great music, charming character designs, not much I feel I can say.

Good SNES port. I found it a little repetitive and a bit hard at the end, but it's a very fun game. I would say that the biggest flaws are the lack of different enemies/scenarios and good boss fights. That's all.

Good way to play through the old levels with better movement and controls.

The first of the DKC GBA ports, this one is mostly unchanged. There are new map graphics, an extra collectible in each level that's tied to a minigame, a level list screen, a score attack mode, and a couple bad minigames. Overall the port doesn't add much, and what it adds is entirely inessential. I would recommend sticking to the original version.

Very excellent port of the SNES classic, and the first franchise I really got into as a young gamer (I genuinely hadn't even heard of Mario yet when I was playing through these games). The graphics were excellent, the levels varied and packed with secrets, and the difficulty just right. Great minigames too with the fishing and rhythm dance studio. The repeating bosses were one minor weak point in an otherwise excellent package.

Arguably the definitive version of DKC.

It's a surprisingly good port of the original DKC. I played through the trilogy on GBA before I played them on SNES and it's honestly not the worst way to experience theses games.

The SNES version is still better, and it's a little weird going back to the GBA ports now since the physics are just different enough that it takes a second to get used to it.

é... donkey kong country

só que com gráficos piores
e musica pior
e sei la o unico motivo de eu ter jogado isso é que eu gosto muito de donkey kong 🥲

[GBA Version] Back in my school days when I was making bad grades and got grounded from all video games, all I had was a hacked PSP that I bought with my own money. And sneak playing emulator games on it was all I could do. For some reason the SNES emulator on PSP could not handle Donkey Kong Country, so the GBA version allowed me to finally play all the way through this classic for the first time. It has changes from the original version, but I was none the wiser at the time. And as long as it kept me occupied through that time, it was doing it's job. So for me this will always be a special game.

That's right. I still played games even though I had C's and D's on my report card. Fucking try and stop me from playing video games. You can't. "You're grounded from all games!" she said and took all the game consoles out of my room, yeah, guess what, I could hide a PSP in my bookbag. Nice try, Mom!

It is a worse version of the SNES original... Which still makes it a good game but no reason to play this over the original. It has a more forgiving save system which I personally don't prefer to the original but I'm sure most people will see it as an improvement.
