you get high and fight abstract art idk what else to say, game slaps

oh hey look its the other best Mother game

Most important moments in my life is probably only a few degrees of separation from EarthBound. No other game has, or will have, the same impact this has had for me.

EarthBound is love in a bottle, and the idea that people continued to question video games as an artistic medium a decade after its release fills me with disgust.

EarthBound is not a product on purpose. If it were feasible for him to do responsibly, I believe with my whole heart that Itoi would have given it away for free. It is the amorphous experience of a man's life, coagulated into a twisting mass of wonder, joy, terror and the cold, beautiful strength that is maturity. It features all of the childly insight of a Steven King novel and all the friendly comfort of a Dragon Quest. It is, in my opinion, the first true great artistic success of the medium, and I include the then-just-released Final Fantasy VI.

And yet... PLAYING it...

EarthBound, despite its divine importance and unlimited heart, fails to thrill with its more traditional video game trappings. Its dungeons, inventory management and combat are all rote and often frustrating. This helps evoke a nostalgia for the Dragon Quests of yore for those who grew up with them, but gives an unfamiliar or undesiring player little to latch onto. Honestly when I'm bogged down with the "video game" parts rather than exploring the world and its characters, I'm not having fun with EarthBound, and that happens to be a quite sizable percentage of the game. This is why I cannot give this, one of the most important, most beautiful games ever made, a full-throated set of all five stars. It cannot truly deliver on its gameplay fronts... at least not for me, someone who didn't turn to Dragon Quest until their 20's.

The next question I always ask myself whenever I think this about an RPG (and it rarely comes up elsewhere), is one of degrees. To what extent do these inadequacies Get In The Way? A game like Final Fantasy VII is too easy for its own good (from a modern perspective anyway) but its gameplay blazes by so quickly and smoothly that one barely even notices that all they did in that boss fight was spam the attack command. It does not Get In The Way, even if it doesn't maximize its potential. By contrast, in Persona 2: Innocent Sin, battles might be similarly trivial, but they are so incessantly drawn out and so disorientingly frequent that they DO become a damaging annoyance rather than just a missed opportunity. Earthbound, tragically, falls into the latter camp... if only slightly.

I can give full marks to Final Fantasy VI because its underbaked character gimmicks are so harmless that it's seldom even noticed that there's anything wrong with them. Like many Final Fantasy games, it's a smoothie that goes down easy. Conversely, every playthrough I do of Earthbound goes on a year long hiatus shortly after I get through the monkey caves.

I would be lying through my teeth if I said that I was not still constantly tempted to just give Earthbound the full score anyway. It is one of the most important video games ever made. I implicitly trust each of the children of EarthBound with my life... but my desires to play EarthBound never last long, and that has to count for something.

Edit: Nah, screw it. I've let other games get away with worse.

is it overrated? possibly. does that matter whatsoever? not at all. every negative thing you've heard about this game is probably overblown, and every good thing you've heard about this game is understated.

The battle system is fairly standard and kinda boring, finding out where to go can be tedious, but man the graphics and dialogue make playing through this game so satisfying. Also shout out to the soundtrack, dungeon man theme is a bop

A subversive and infintely memorable JRPG that captures the heart of the player, and doesnt let it go until the end.
Fans of the genre need to play this for its great commentary and soundtrack that crams so many emotions in such a small file size.
The gameplay can be frustrating and janky at times (especially if you don't read a lot of the flavor text presented) but the amount of heart within this game is undeniable, and even if you dislike it, it is bound to make a lasting impression on you.

Still my personal favorite in the series, even if it's not the best gameplay or story-wise. It's got a great tone and a lot of heart.

Pretty charming game, but the gameplay can get a bit annoying at times and isn't really spectacular

Earthbound fan excited to play game for first time.

When you play this game you understand why everyone who played it went on to make their own game.

it definitely isnt the groundbreaking masterpiece its renowned for but overall its not a bad rpg

One of the most endearing RPGs of all time, brimming with eccentricity and nostalgia.

Fantastic, quirky RPG. Nothing else quite like it (except the other Mother games).

An excellent game matched with an excellent coalescence of zaniness and heart. A game everyone should experience at least once.
6 Trons

A classic. An unforgettable experience. One of my favorite games of all time. If you haven't played this, what the hay are you doing?! A personal favorite.

I first played this when I was a kid, but I don't think I ever progressed further than Onett, because I only have vague memories of fighting snakes, crows, and dogs. After hearing about it for years, I recently decided that I'd finally play EarthBound for real. Playing through this for the first time and using the Player's Guide was the closest thing I've had to an ethereal video game experience in years. This game deserves every ounce of praise it's ever gotten. I get it now.

This game has a weird oversized reputation that honestly doesn't do it any favors because at the end of the day it's just a cute lil' quirky JRPG with a handful of really strong emotional beats. And that's great! But it ain't the second coming of Christ and I feel like a lot of folks who've come to this game were preemptively set up to be disappoitned by overzealous fans.

this game's DNA is all over Indie gaming and i both love and hate it for that

Influyente de la hostia y más psicodélico que la mandanga del fary

Writing: 4/5
Gameplay: 3/5
Art Design & Visuals: 4/5

Atmosphere & Immersion: 2/5

I don't like this game much myself (the humor doesn't really click with me, and I think it has pretty serious balance problems throughout), but I respect people who do.

cada pieza multimedial en este juego es excelente

such a great rpg and a wacky experience overall, i don't know if i can think of a game that has more charm than this one

This game is extremely near and dear to me, I’ve played it 3 times and it made me nostalgic since my very first playthrough due to the feelings of childlike wonder I got while playing it. The mood ranges from calm to spooky to heartwarming to trippy and everything in between, the same can mostly be said for the visuals and music that elicit these feelings. The game is light on the story but the places you go and the people you meet make it feel like a real journey by the end where you do get some very simple yet impactful exposition about Ness, all of it is unique and unforgettable. There’s no game quite like it to me, it’s a real masterpiece.

"If God had a favorite game, it might be Earthbound."
I would say that it sure has been a bit overpraised, but that is with good reason of course.
