I really wanted to love this. Or at least play it all the way through. The game world, story, and dialogue are just as charming and funny as everyone says they are. And the soundtrack is rad, obviously. But the old-school battle mechanics, plethora of items that all do basically the same thing, and un-intuitive "menu hell" made this get tedious real fast. Might try returning to it at some point.
Easily one of the best RPG's I've ever played. It somehow balances a great battle system with hilarious dialogue and characters. The final boss might be my favorite of all time. James Rolfe called Giygas "intangible", and that's the perfect way to describe the final fight. My biggest issue is the fact that our main characters talk incredibly rarely. It attempts to push this romance between Ness and Paula, and it doesn't work. In spite of that, it's close to perfect in my eyes.
I don't know how on earth a game about as mechanically complex as the first Final Fantasy was such a ride.
The only phrase I think I have to describe it is Je ne sais quoi.
There's something Itoi does that just feels so... different, even now with Undertale and all the games that take after Earthbound. It has a personality of its own, from start to horrifying finish.

This is one of my favorite games of all time. I will admit buying items one at time is annoying,as it the small inventory space you have, but besides that this game is really good. I love the art style, the soundtrack, and the strange dialogue the NPCs say as well. Plus this game has one of the most epic final bosses ever.
This was my second playthrough of Earthbound. Earthbound of "those games" you ought to play on a nicer CRT (it's got the snappy old pixel art look, great colors, etc.), and I had just happened to get my hands on one. This game is probably overrated but it still looks nice and has a funny sense of humor. I think later games may do this style better, but this is a fine swing at it.
This game's one of the best games that I come back to every year to play again. Turn-based combat is super fun, the PSI spells are always super cool to use and the visuals for them are fun. All the characters and dialogue are funny or interesting, always loved the part where a group of cops gang up on you, a tiny child and try to beat the shit out of you.
A fun RPG where you don't have to grind at all. It has very good music, a suprisingly non-straightforward story and an extremely unsettling final boss. However, the characters are not very good. The standout music is Battle Against a Mobile Opponent, Giygas is Wounded and Battle Against an Unsettling Opponent (probably my favourite of the bunch).
if i were to touch a starman, what would it feel like? Would it be rubbery? liquidy? like jello? does it have bones? are its hands forever stuck to its hips? is the starman in constant pain? are the starmen just slaves to giygas and we are actually freeing them from their prison? are they really evil? are we really the bad guys? (no) are starmen intelligent life? are they dumb but still know psi? do they do their jobs because they get paid to do so? do starmen have elected officials which is why some have armor and some dont? is there political discourse between starmen, where the ones in the stonehenge base support giygas while the ones in onett dont? do starmen die naturally? do they eat? can they eat? do they poo? is there a starman pp? are starmen actually just different versions of the same undertale character? are starmen aware of different realities? do starmen know about lucas in mother 3 but refuse to fuck with him because theyve learned their lesson twice? why are they loyal to giygas? did giygas blackmail all these starmens families? do they have families? WHATS THE DEAL MAN
A fantastic game in which the story hold up to this day. It's a nice journey, but tough adventure where Ness and party get together to defeat the ultimate evil, Giygas. The JRPG elements have both unique and, unfortunately, annoying assets. The unique one is the sliding health bar and I like this addition. It gives you a chance to save your member, prevents the waste of items (if you have healing psi options available), and makes use of your reaction time. The annoying additions, however, are stuff like limited inventory space and the Dragon Quest influence of walking to a specific building to revive fainted party members. There's also the homesick ailment in which you need to talk to your mom through the phone to cure this, but when you're in a dungeon or somewhere far away this becomes a straight up inconvenience. I love you, Earthbound, but you have mechanics and little things that can make the game a bumpy playthrough.
