Every level is a finely tuned clockwork world, but the Paris scenario is maybe one of the most perfectly constructed levels in a game of all time with the sprawling Sapienza estate a close second. What really sets Hitman 2016 over the top is the emergent game play that comes from trying to complete missions with extreme restrictions.
I was surprised to find out this game had a story. I thought it was just a hiding in dumpsters and closets simulator.
I love this game, but I play it wrong. I don't kill my target, I kill every single other living soul on the map and then jog around chasing my target for 20 minutes laughing at the thought of them running from a well dressed bald man while tripping over hundreds of corpses.

A new bar for the stealth genre. Hitman provides so much freedom and so many opportunities take out your target in these intricately designed sandboxes. The locations you visit on this globetrotting adventure are stunning and IO interactive have done a fantastic job in recreating each of these. The level design is second to none and the organic narrative within each of these is so clever. The only hiccups are Colarado which feels more restrictive and generic than the rest of the sandboxes and the barebones story which only really picks ups steam towards the end. But you’re not here for the story, you’re here to kick a toilet onto a Generals head as he listens to his guards bitch about him on the speaker you turned on behind their backs. This game doesn’t take itself seriously and I’m all for it.
This was a good amount of fun, but I don’t think it quite clicked with me. I had fun role playing as a secret agent/assassin. It let me live out my spy fantasy I had as a kid buying spy toys from the scholastic book fair and joining the EPF in Club Penguin. Once I finished each level though I didn’t feel much incentive to go back. I know there’s a lot of re-playability with different scenarios and challenges to do, but I never really felt compelled to do them. I always though “eh I already killed them I don’t really want to do it again.” Also, there wasn’t a level where I said “hell yeah this is the one bro this shit is fire oh my god.” I have a feeling Hitman 2 might do it for me though based on just the intro New-Zealand level I played. I think the extra level of polish (updated graphics, frame rate, HUD, etc.) and what looks like even better designed levels might push this formula over the top and make it great for me.
Bald man kills people. A casual but hard to master and really fun game that doesn't take itself too seriously, there is barely any story to follow here. Emergent narrative is something I will always cherish in video game design, and maybe Hitman 2016 could be called an immersive sim-like (oh god) since it allows so much player expression and different approaches to the main objectives.
Goofy, sometimes ridiculous, but awesome.

Epic Games gave out the base game on PC and honestly it was one of the funnest times I've had for free in awhile. Really well executed. The only Hitman game I completed before this one was Absolution and this one is an amazing upgrade. Although they mostly forgo having a plot, the focus on having large "playgrounds" for the player to complete challenges in is a great move. I've picked up Hitman 2 (2018) and am now having a great time there! If this one is on sale, deffo grab it, or get the game as DLC for Hitman 2.
