Controls are the best of the series and it finally feels somewhat comfortable using all of Snake's tools of holding enemies up and playing with them. The story is by far the worst of all the games however, with ridiculous amounts of obscenely long cutscenes, some of which cannot be skipped (the briefing sections). After Chapter 2, the game moves away from MGS3 style gameplay for generic third person shooter-style gameplay for Ch. 3. Chapter 4 moves back to stealth, but its with solely robots and your options become a lot more limited. Ch. 5 is barely anything outside of that long trek through the ship deck with Frogs and Gekkos.

Yeah its a trainwreck, but its a beautiful train wreck

This is the first MGS game I ever played. The whole time, 13 year-old me was thinking, “This probably makes more sense if you’ve played the previous games.” Spoiler: this game doesn’t make sense. And the gameplay isn’t nearly as good as V. But damn if it isn’t a ride.

Now that's how you end a video game.

Old Snake is cool but Merrill coming back surprised the shit out of me since she died in my ps1 game and I didn’t realise she could not die in the ps1 game.

Me gusta el fanservice y Old Snake es el mejor Snake

Kind of a beautiful mess but ultimately the weakest Metal Gear game.

The perfect ending to the series. The dumbest most fan service thing you will ever experience but i would be lying if i said I didn’t enjoy it. The gameplay is sharper than anything else in the series that came before it, the music is great, the voice acting is as good as usual. I really didn’t appreciate the Akiba and Meryl thing, that was just annoying tbh, the cutscenes go on forever and theres alot of exposition that could stand to be cut out. The bosses are pretty average apart from the final one but yeah its fun lol but not as good as 2 or 3.

too reliant on previous games in the series for how short it is, but still great fanservice and a hell of a lot of fun

Story works for me. A little too much talk, but a great time overall.

Also best boxart in the series. At least in PAL regions.

Not a misunderstood masterpiece but, I'd say it's a masterpiece despite its circumstances. It was never supposed to exist, and the level of quality on display for a series that was avoiding creative bankruptcy like bullets is impressive.

Hahahahahaha hell yeah dude

People like to pretend this game sucks but Ocelot kisses you so that can't be true

I think this game is underrated, and that it's flaws are overblown! It's really good, and it's honestly not THAT much sillier than the rest of the franchise.

offensive joke to the earlier games and to itself, but quite funny sometimes

A really ridiculous mess with one of the most absurdly Epic final bosses of all time, especially if you';ve been following the series.

It goes a bit too far in trying to explain absolutely every tiny bit of information regarding metal gear and opens up problems with it, the meta commentary of this game feels like it's constantly insulting the series and the player at times and the Beasts are... cool initially with some truly horrid backstories, but pretty underdeveloped. Still, not as bad as people would say imo.

Pretty baffled by the other reviews on this site to be honest. There is perhaps no other game that I come back to and think about more than this.

Some of the best writing of any game ever. Perhaps the best final boss fight, best ending, best loading screens, best opening, best conclusion to a series, best villain. Some of the best character work. Some of the most detailed gun customization. Many gameplay innovations. Perfects many of the mechanics from Snake Eater (camouflage, flashbacks, first person in cutscenes). Controls better than any MGS before it. A tremendous contribution to the scifi genre (not just video games).

This is absolutely one of the greatest video games ever made. Yes, there are some minor things we can quibble with. It does "draw" (copy?) heavily on content from MGS1. But so did MGS2. He was trying to make a point with it, and he perfected it in 4. It is the perfect end to the Solid Snake saga. Yes, the cutscenes are long. It's an acquired taste I guess. But if you play games for the story, this is one of the best ever made.

I've done many playthroughs trying to get all the ranks. Still never got the Big Boss rank. I will get it sometime for the Platinum.

I'm no hero. Never was. Never will be... I'm just an old killer, hired to do some wet work.

Nowhere near as good as the previous 3. Plot was honestly kinda whatever for me, gameplay was usually worse than 3 and it had some really dumb and awkward writing at times, specially the briefings. Also, frying an egg for 5 minutes with a lid on seems excessive, what the fuck. Still, for all my complaining, it was a satisfying enough conclusion and had some absolutely amazing scenes and moments, mostly near the end.

I finished this game a while ago, and I had to take some time to think about what my opinions on this game were. I am very conflicted about it. The gameplay is mostly excellent, with the boss fights being especially good, but I can't get over how it feels like the game completely didn't feel like a Metal Gear game. The earlier titles all tried something new, with new settings, new characters, etc. This game is pure fanservice. It literally has bosses made up of the old bosses, and it seems like it tries so hard to end the series and tie together all loose ends, but I'm not sure if that worked out. I can't say I wasn't satisfied playing the game, because it was a lot of fun, and the radiator sequence at the end was straight up amazing, but I am very conflicted about the story. The soundtrack was really good though, with Old Snake being among my favourite tunes!

What a messy game. So many weird twists and turns, bad bosses like Raven, and despite all of that it still remains enjoyable. A ton of mechanics with little time fully realize all of them. It almost feels like the game has too much content and squanders it for spectacle. It is glorious spectacle, to be sure, but I would've preferred a more focus on gameplay than a hurried rush to end of the Metal Gear saga at the time. High highs, and low lows, but still worth playing.

MGS 4 is... Weird. On one hand, it has some of the most entertaining levels of the franchise, but on the other, some of it's bosses are either mid or just a total slog to fight. In any way, it's a good farewell to the story of Solid Snake and a love letter to the entire franchise, specially for the first game. Be warned tho, some cutscenes are really long, so make sure you have a couple of free hours to play this game.
