I'm split between which NMH game I like more. This game took out the tedious open-world sections and turned the jobs of the first game into retro-based arcade games, which were huge steps up. This game also doesn't make you grind for money to proceed with the story either. The bosses aren't as memorable this time around though. Playing as Henry was nice, but Shinobu controlled awkwardly and the New Destroyman fight was a grind because of it. The conjugal visits in between levels were dumb.

It is still No More Heroes, but the atmosphere we had in the first game is not 100% present here. Still worthy tho.

The Autarch of Flame be like

Still good, but a bit of a miss

the boss fights and general gameplay are better after you get through the shinobu stages and get the dual swords but everything before that is a slog and that included with generally weaker and weirder (in a negative sense) writing as well as the fact suda's absence is extremely noticeable ends up making it a worse experience to me, but generally around the same quality

Only problem is that it isn't longer and you only play as Henry once

Not as great as the first game, felt too short and didn't really have a sense of progression like the first did.

However, it's short comings don't take away from the fact that it's still more NMH content and an important part of Travis's story, I recommend it if you liked the first one.

While it lacks what the first game had in dialogue and story, it certainly makes up for it with gameplay and visuals. All in all, I find the two games to be equally as good as each other. Hopefully No More Heroes III is the best of both worlds!

listen travis and sylvia are objectively terrible for each other but when she says "my no more hero" i fucking cry every time

I have mixed feeling about this one. On one hand, I had fun playing it, but there are things that's missing from the first one (like driving and drive your way to the stores / ranking matches at Santa Destroy).

Also, this game is more serious, even tho at the second half gets a little more "weird" in a funny way, but, still, I think it lacks part of what the first game did so well.

Still, a good game. Travis Strikes Back, here I go!

Writing and bosses aren't as good as the first one but the gameplay and minigames are better. Pretty good time still though

Hoo boy my first playthrough of this game pissed me off, but it was mostly because I couldn't break my old habits of No More Heroes 1 combat. Alot of things have improved and some neat features were added, my favorite being that you can now switch between 4 different unique Beam Katanas at any point during boss fights and stages, which I thought was something No More Heroes 1 could've used. The gameplay feels a bit better and more slash combo-oriented, and the change to beat attacks while I was opposed to it at first actually makes more sense, since you can use them between moves allowing you to more strategically use certain beat attacks to set up other moves like the running slash. The removal of the overworld as well was nice, and also to not pay to get into the rankings fights allows you to focus on things like upgrading your beam katana arsenal and upgrading Travis himself in the gym. Also in my opinion, the Revenge Missions are way better than the Side Missions in No More Heroes 1, they're a quick way to make some easy money and a good way to test out new beam katanas and practice parrying or double deathblows. The soundtrack of this game is also really really good, although it's disappointing one of the tracks was used for 2 different boss fights. Now, I hate to rag on this game as I absolutely love it, and since the Switch release I've beaten the game 3 times now, but this definitely is a flawed game. First problem I have is that this game has a fetish for knocking you on your ass every 2 seconds. Every other hit from an enemy will knock you on your ass, which takes you out of the action, somewhat frequently if you're bad. This is super frustrating and just kills the momentum and fast-pace the combat feels like it should have, and yes players should be punished for being hit but this feels like overkill sometimes especially for bosses like Million Gunman who can just stunlock you if you slip up once. Speaking of Million Gunman, holy shit are the Shinobu levels bad. The platforming is clunky as shit and feels really awful, half the time I find myself slipping off platforms back down, and using this in a fucking bossfight is the most annoying shit ever. Speaking of that, New Destroyman is the worst boss in the game, it's a 2v1 where one runs away like a pussy the minute you even step within 1 mile of him and the other is an annoying close range with unblockable attacks that either stun you or knock you on your ass. Half the time it feels like I wail on the melee Destroyman and then wait for the other one to come down to revive him so I can wail on him for like 2 points of damage. Also I wish we got to play as Henry more than just for 1 boss, like why couldn't we have played as Henry and taken out the other 3 bosses that he instead just kills off screen? Thats another thing, the game advertises 51 boss fights, but thats a big lie. Switch the nujmbers around, and thats the real count, 15 bosses. Still a good number and more than the original, but why advertise the 51 on the box if youre going to have a boss fight where you kill like 25 of them at once and then another where the boss kills 12 of them in a cutscene, and then another where Henry kills 3 offscreen? Last complaint about gameplay before I move onto story is the final boss of the game, Jasper Batt Jr. is horrible. The first phase is really boring, theres really nothing to it. The 2nd phase gets really annoying as he has this move where he just teleports and flies at you all over the place like 4 times in a row, and the final phase is a really lame "dodge a bunch of bigass attacks and then run up and hit him a couple of times". The rest of the boss fights besides those ones are really really fun though, although I will say that Chloe is way too easy. For writing, I kind of miss how in No More Heroes 1, Travis was kind of this loser trying way too hard to sound cool. He'd say corny one liners or random shit that made no sense like "If challenge had a taste, you'd be quite delicious." Feels like the writes kind of began to like Travis themselves, but storywise it kind of makes sense that he'd be cooler considering he was once the top assassin that was somehow able to just walk away. Dialogue is kinda lacking between bosses, where some you'll talk for a bit and others theres hardly and exchange between Travis and the boss, or in Ryuji's case, they don't say a word. Makes some characters not as fun or interesting as the assassins of the first game. The story of the game seems to take itself a little more seriously than the first game which is fine, the first game's plot felt like a parody of bad action movies that tried to throw as many twists as possible into the last 30 minutes of the game. Really overall a really fun game, but for some of the improvements it makes, it added some more flaws.

Some people fuck at funerals, I play video games about cutting off heads.

i have an immense respect for this game but goddamn is it not actually that good

It lacks the high quality writing that came with the first game and Suda's heavier involvement, but I feel like the gameplay also smokes the original at times.

If you ever wanna know what the definition of "missing the whole point" is, look no further than No More Heroes 2. It's like if someone looked at the satire and irony of NMH1 and decided to make it a real thing.

Despite some well intended attempts at adding a bit more depth to the (intentionally) shallow combat of the first game by giving Travis a selection of new lightsabers that change up the pace and provide some tactic advantages to the player, it ends up feeling less visceral and "orgasmic" than NMH1, with sword hits that dont feel as immediate and cathartic, an aspect that was integral to the NMH experience.

NMH2 feels like it's trying at every step to one up the first game's more cartoonish elements, but instead of understanding why those worked before in the first place and how it built up to them in meaningful ways, it just throws wackyness at the screen with no real purpose other than for it's own sake. Bosses that before made you question the nature of the game itself now only exist to fullfill the player's basic expectations of a regular action game. Side characters that were used to juxtapose the more grounded elements of NMH1 with its more bizarre and out of place moments are now just trope-y anime walking cliches.

Even the side gigs are wrong. Now they amount to pixel retro based minigames that all look and sound the same, further distancing themselves from the mundane and muted minigames of the first game that gave character and uniqueness to Travis and his surrounding lifestyle.

Whatever pretenses at saying something about the nature of sequels that NMH2 might have had, like the onslaught of enemies in the later levels that bordeline on mindnumbness or Travis' frustration and jadedness with the whole "being number 1" affair, it ultimately ends up falling flat on it's face because it never feels like an intended goal.

It's not a bad game. The soundtrack is amazing and on it's best moments it provides some great bursts of spectacle. But Travis get's the girl in this one. That's what we wanted, but is that what we really needed?

Somethings I like more, some things I like in comparison to NMH1. I think combat is overall better, but ecstasy guage is too easy to get and kinda wipes the floor with most of the game, and I never found like I got a boss fight that really needed me to use my full kit like Henry did (though i appreciate bosses not having a brickshit ton of health like NMH1)
I like that the story is more... there and an actual story with progression, but a couple of boss assassins in this game really get sidelined and it sucks, because the assassins who do get their piece in this game I like a lot. It doesn't have to be a lot but characters like Margaret just being there going Hey Whats Up Lets Fight and then you kill her and move it feels like such a missed opportunity when u think about the NMH1 assassins.
The between fights stuff is fine, I kinda miss the overworld but I also don't think I miss actually driving a mile between the places so whatever.
It's a flawed but cool game, but thats the mood of suda51 games isn't it?

Oh yeah, switch port is great. I got frame drops (particularly in the overworld in NMH1) but this game is smooth sailing all the way through.

The general gameplay is great, way better than the first game that doesn't let you have to do forced grinding in between ranked fights, and has great minigames with it too. This can also be said about the bosses too once you get through the worst parts of the game in Shinobu's stages. However, with what I just said it means that the beginning to mid parts of the game are not good, and that's because it is. Grinding to get the weapons, upgrades, and going through the bosses make it weaker. Not to mention the fact that some of the bosses are not fun to fight against or are way too easy.
The writing is not as solid as the first one, and some moments I questioned the decisions like Shinobu's character, the design around the moral of the story, and others. Suda51's lack of presence and direction in this game really shows how many weak points are present in the writing route, but the jokes in this one are solid (sometimes) that capture No More Heroes's fun, vulgar humor.
Fuck Jasper Batt Jr., though. Not only is he one of the worst final bosses, but the worst design decisions of the whole story. There could've been so many better ways to properly create the feeling of disappointment from your lack of fulfillment to get revenge in this journey of satire.
I'd say it's up to you whether to pick this game up or not, but I did pick it up just so I can move onto playing Travis Strikes Back. Just be warned for the first parts of the game and the last boss then you're good.

With No More Heroes 1 I was incredibly glad I waited as long as I did to play it as it was a game I surely would not have fully gotten at my stupid 14 year old age. In total opposition I wish I played this 10 years ago because this is dumb as shit and I would've totally overlooked that.

While it does improve on some elements, I kinda like it a little less than the diets one, it’s still a great game though.

while the gameplay is actually slightly better than the first, the story is kind of what ruined the game for me. it's still really good though and worth checking out.

in which the game series about masturbation gets masturbatory

Same message as the last of us 2 but pulled off better

It's somehow better but yet worst than NMH1.

Still a great game. Can't wait for 3
