Incredible story. Gameplay and graphics have aged poorly but if that doesn't bother you it's very worth the slog.

With a super realistic setting for the time and a cast of memorable characters, it's no wonder why this game is still fondly remembered even to this day.

I never finished the story to this game. All I would do was go into mulitplayer and go to the fort and blow up the sheriffs they sent my way with the cannon on top. It was fun though.

So great western game, with memorable characters, some redemption, some bad choices for a non happy ending and yet a pretty bad shooter. It feels so complete with even some secrets and then appears a random zombie-fashioned DLC with creepy beasts to hunt and apocalypse horses to ride. What else?

A masterpiece, there's nothing like this.

In life, there's no redemption.

This story is really dry and the gameplay is painfully simple, I think it really goes far from having a strong ending (albeit cliched ending) and the strong western identity that gives this game a sense of flavor. Basically this is the game for you if you ever wanted to role play as what you imagine Clint Eastwood to be

Foda, apenas
Fico triste de lembrar que perdi o save que estava quase no final :/ mas ainda vou completar (e sim, eu SEI o final)

more than gta with horses. decently memorable narrative with one hell of a gut-punch ending

this has aged poorly and the final hours and ending aren't earned by the previous 15.

here we go. this game made me fucking cry like a fucking baby in the end. I love this game so much. The story is great. Characters are so very peculiar. I mean, Rockstar really knows how to make a fun game and add a great storyline to it. Plus, the Western setting is amazing. I actually bought the game because of the undead DLC thingy (because I was into zombie shit and wanted a ps3 zombie game to play online with friends) and turned out to be one of my favorite games of all time.

It took me 10 years to finally pick up this game, and what a mistake that was. This is now easily one of my favorite Rockstar games ever. The story is well-written, with social commentary that can be pretty relevant today. The gunplay felt really good too, and using Dead Eye to get a better aim on enemies never failed to be satisfying. In addition to that, you get a diverse amount of side characters, all leading John Marston towards his goal of bringing his former gang members to justice and freeing his family from the federal government.

I never really did get behind the sentiment that this is Rockstar's "Magnum Opus"

But I understand why people think that.

Gorgeous world, amazing story and characters, fantastic ending and a wealth of things to do.

Red Dead 2 is MUCH better tho..

Single player is a lot of fun, but the multiplayer was my favorite part. Nice progression system and plenty to do.

You follow the heavy smoker John Marshton as he just tries to get through this shitty game just like you are when you are playing it. The story of a man with a family that is taken hostage by the state and then has to work for them to liberate his family works better in a movies because you do not have to do anything. However the fact that you these menial side missions while your family is taken hostage feels pretty unimmersive. It certainly does not help that every dialogue you have is somewhat clouded by John Marshton temperament and somewhat unenthusiastic demeanor. So the game juggles between having silly missions and having the character being believable as he has to portray a family man that wants to save his family.

The environments lack a bit of color variations. The shooting is kinda unengaging and way too easy.

I made an essay about this, I loved it

Wow! This is my shit right here! Poignant story, amazing world building, well written characters and dialogue. Really a must play for all the right reasons.

If you want to play this on PC, read the end of my review.

"People don't forget, nothing gets forgiven" is a fitting line to describe this game's narrative, one that is built around legacy. Legacy is what dictates the major players in Red Dead Redemption for the actions they take, whether it be in spite of, in retribution of, or to redeem themselves from. When finishing Red Dead Redemption, I came to understood the imperfect character of John Marston. He is similar in style to characters like Niko Bellic and Michael De Santa when looked at broadly. A flawed person trying to move on, but whereas Niko and Michael are drawn into crime by necessity, John is drawn into it by force for his wife and son. In such a way, it's pretty easy to empathize with him and go through the same feelings he does throughout the storyline.

The setting in particular only accentuates this. John as a character feels more grounded in the juxtaposition of a fairly realistic dying west filled with a cast of characters colorful in personality. The degree of difference between going from the beginning McFarlane Ranch, to the borderline industrialized Blackwater, or the untamed wilderness of Tall Trees is stark to the say the very least. The map has it's own sort of language. It provides further insight to the narrative without being a bit too on the noise. It is very easy to see what you'll encounter in Mexico when just visiting every city. In addition, the characters are made to a degree that they are almost caricatures and in some cases a biting satire, with some being a bit more obvious than the other. However, the dialogue executes it with a degree of earnestness reminiscent of the old 3D GTAs. It is unabashedly a spaghetti western, but the writing team has added a degree of percipience that you may not always find in those films.

Gameplay itself is good enough, as the main allure of this game will be the setting and narrative. The missions at first can be a bit slow, as with many Rockstar games, but once the second and third act come around there is a good variety to all the missions and the pacing ramps up quite a bit. In between, you'll have smaller things like challenges for exploring the world via picking plants, hunting animals, finding treasures along with some shooting challenges. The last few ones for hunting and shooting can get a bit tricky. There is also minigames like Poker, Blackjack, etc which can be a bit of a time sink if you get distracted. I found myself getting quite a bit into Liar's Dice and Poker. The AI in the former can get a predictable however.

For an older title the game still looks good apart from some frame drops and aliasing issues. Given the supposed troubled development it is unsurprising, but you might find yourself annoyed once or twice with it. Face models and the soundtrack are specific technical highlights. The soundtrack in particular fits this game like a glove, I really can't think of anything wrong with it. Face model capturing and expressions are little more natural than GTA IV, and the VA is superb with great performances present in even the most minute characters.

To say the very least, RDR is an incredibly engrossing game from start to finish. Every detail put into it is kept with a degree of genuineness unmatched within the generally limited western genre.

As of Nov. 22 2020, if you want to play this on PC you need a pretty decent computer and be willing to sacrifice random encounters, treasure hunting, and some traversal aspects when doing Xbox 360 emulation. I did this and played the PS3 version for stuff I missed out on. Unless you're fickle for these relatively smaller aspects i'd say it's worth emulating if you only have a gaming PC.

Compared to the second game, this one has a tighter narrative, albeit a slow start, which picked up considerably when the main character reached Mexico. The protagonist and story are less compelling however, though his sarcasm and dry humor kept the dialogue fresh. The graphics are serviceable for a 2010 game, while the gameplay remains more or less the same with the second one. The language and sexual content are more explicit however, which makes it interesting that the sequel seemed to sanitize these aspects, though the violence remains just as bloody. I also love the additions of Wilhelm scream, and while the ending is less emotional, it remains just as poignant and even more shocking than the sequel. The conclusion really fits with the dark and gritty universe they created and I really appreciate that the developers didn't skimp out on it.
