a little underwhelming compared to its goliath older brother Silent Hill 2, but despite its comparatively limp story the gameplay is still fun. not a great game, but a good one worth trying

Silent Hill 3 is a bumblefuck of a game compared to Silent Hill 2. The areas of this game just dont make sense, nothings connected and they're confusing mazes. Sometimes you'll just get lost in the area searching for the maps. Heather becomes god with all the weapons you can have, you do feel like a badass when you swing your samurai Sekiro sword, but this is Silent Hill, I wanna be scared and feel hopeless, not feel like a badass. The enemies in this game, there are 5 bosses and 4 of them are good, then theres the fucking dog enemy now you gotta understand, I didnt think anything could get as annoying as the dog enemy but when the crawling man appeared, this is when I started asking the REAL questions.

Why does heather stay on the ground for 5 minutes everytime she falls over? Why is she a samurai AND a medieval knight? Why did this first half of the game suck dick?!

When I finally got up to that shitty piss easy boss fight on top of the apartment, I was basically done with the game on a motivational level, but after the boss and Heather finally went to silent hill, this is where my motivation rose again. At this point I wanted to see what else the game has in store because this really is where the game shines, it can still be tedious and if you played the game you already know the mansion sucks so much balls, but I believe the 2nd half of the game should be seen and I guess the first 2 areas of the game are really cool too.

If you compare this game to silent hill 2, you will be disappointed, but if you take this game on it's own merit, you will genuinely enjoy it.

Best Silent Hill is best. Heather Beam is also a great weapon. There's nothing else I need to say that hasn't been said before by somebody else.

da época que eu joguei todos de uma só vez

While not as emotionally captivating as 2, I enjoy the more overt occult elements of Silent Hill. The environment art is incredible for a PS2 game.

The story, characters, and production values make it a worthy addition to the series. Excellent cinematics, music and mood.

i wish it was a story as strong as sh2, but it didn't and i think it's okay <3 heather <333

Pretty comfortably my least favorite of the Team Silent series efforts. That's by no means a great insult as this is pretty incredible still but I've become pretty solid in this feeling over time/playthroughs.

Heather is an icon and the best protagonist, still.

This game is chocked full with easily the best imagery in the series. It takes much of the groundwork that had been established SH1 and fine tunes it. The world is more oppressive, atmospheric, and is vehemently trying to kill you.
I find that most people are quite critical of the series' return to an occult based narrative over a psychological one, but the occultism is one of the things I personally love about Silent Hill in general. Even so, I found Heather's coming of age story to be pretty touching. It has a lot of subtlety that I think people occasionally don't give it credit for.

An interesting experience to say the least, but one marred by quite a few issues regarding narrative and design -- the former admittedly my own fault, since I didn't know this was a direct sequel to the first Silent Hill, which I haven't played yet. After amending that, I'll surely give SH3 a retry. Only after that will I be comfortable giving it a rating.

But I do have to say: technically, it's virtually perfect, one of the most effective audiovisual horror experiences in history, superior even to what Team Silent achieved in SH2.

thank god i'm not christian

Really liked it. Heather is the most likable main character of this 3 first installments. It has an annoying teenager personality that you learn to love. Yes, obvious remarks ("it's a table") still there, but usually Heather gives her opinion on what she sees. This might look trivial, but I think it's great that we see what the main character thinks, not the main character delivering information to us, the players.

This is a sequel to the first Silent Hill and makes that confusing story a lot clearer. Cutscenes are fantastic, but I have to say that they exaggerated a lot movements and facial expressions, specially on Heather.

Animation and movement look very fluid, monsters are cool and have some AI. Bosses still stupid, I find that a constant in the saga. Sound and music are amazing –thanks again, Mr. Yamaoka–. I love how sound effects make you feel that here you are again, playing this scary game saga. At times, I didn't want to do anything that would trigger a sound effect: a closed door, an open door, I didn't care, everything was scary.

Sometimes I had to hit PAUSE and take a breath: I think this is probably the scariest one of the first trilogy. Or not. I don't know, but it's as scary as it gets.

As a fan of the saga, I feared disappointment, since I love SH and SH2. Ha!

Mandatory for any survival horror fan.

The third entry in the series, and arguably the last true entry in the series. I still haven't read the indepth ongoings of the development process of this game, but it's known that sadly it was rushed, which prevented it from reaching the same heights (and lenghts) of the previous games. Still, as it stands, Silent Hill 3 remains a solid survival-horror experience and the character of Heather should have spanned more games.

I loooooove this game. For me it’s the best out the franchise but everyone has their own opinions. A perfect balance of fear and emotion.

the main character gets told that she's pregnant with God and immediately gives herself an abortion, and if you don't think that's the tightest shit then get out of my face

If I've learned anything, it's that the people who think this is better than 2 are probably lesbians, and that's just fine.

best game where you abort god on playstation 2

Don't hate me but, for me, it's the most inconsistent game of the original Team Silent run.
To start with some of it's many strengths, it's the best looking PS2 game I've ever played. The character models, monster and level designs and overall physics are highly impressive and ahead of their time. The atmosphere, particularly of the first title, is stronger here than ever. The game also boasts one of the franchise's scariest moments, involving a very particular mirror.

Some people's criticism comes from the fact that it takes half a game to actually get to the town of Silent Hill. But I would say the best half is the first, set at a shopping mall. The game's protagonist, Heather, is one of the most emotive and likeable in the series. The theme of transitioning into female adulthood is distinct in the design of this first half, as Heather battles monsters, some skinny, some overweight, phallic, bloody, long-legged and so on, through a shopping mall of various shops she no doubt visited in her teenage years. In the same way James of SH2 battles with his guilt and sexual frustration, Heather battles with body image, menstruation and emotional maturity.
The initial themes shift and arguably the game becomes less compelling when the second half becomes a straight revenge story, although there are some interesting points about the town's cult anticipating Heather's arranged birthing of god. There are even moments where Heather revisits some of the same locations from SH2, and as wonderful as they are, they go on for too long due to our familiarity. It also rehashes a boss battle from the first game, and is just as frustrating.
Regardless of the mixed feelings I have of the game, there's a lot to appreciate and it is still several tiers above even the best of the post-Team-Silent games.

a major step down from its predecessors. really short, relies too heavily on combat and heather is bland

There’s so much interesting imagery here with the different monsters in relation to Heathers own insecurities as a teenager. Unfortunately, the actual storyline trying to tie in directly to Silent Hill 1 takes away from a lot of that and relies on a cult narrative that isn’t all that interesting or satisfying to get to the end of. However, despite some shortcomings in that department, this game is still excellent and has some of the most effective and scary moments in the entire series.

I’m curious to see not only was Silent Hill 4 is like, but how these games replay once you’ve beaten them and have access to extra weapons and cool Easter eggs. Fun stuff, I just wish Konami didn’t actively go out of their way to ruin their games.

The first half of the game doesn't let you rest and can feel a bit tiring but once you get to your apartment, it becomes pretty solid. Story is not really surprising but I like Vincent, Douglas and obviously Heather. It may be the scariest game in the series (mirror scene go brrr) and has a beautiful OST.

I listen to the soundtrack literally every day; best silent hill game I will fight the naysayers

While the story doesn't go as hard as SH2, the gameplay and scares are improved enough that I thought it ended up being the better game.

The debate about Silent Hill 3 is the eternal flame of the fandom. A lot of people love it, a lot of people think it's mediocre, and it's a stalemate that's hard to break even on a personal level. It's great in a lot of ways, and if you analyzed it in a vacuum, there wouldn't be much doubt regarding its quality. The problem I have with it is that Silent Hill 1 and 2 both introduced a brand new type of horror to gaming which I can still appreciate today for how original they are. Silent Hill 3 doesn't carry the torch of innovation, instead just using the existing parts to make more. More can be fine, but just making more of the same doesn't feel like the Silent Hill ethos.

Whilst I love this game I don't think it quite recaptures the feeling of the original, but also doesn't do enough to stand itself up on it's own merits. Nevertheless, the best way of describing this game is 'Silent Hill 2 does Silent Hill 1'. The story of this game meshes very well with the original and heather is an interesting new kind of protaganist with plenty of personality. This, like Origins, gives you a lot of reasons to replay it, but this game feels like it's about half the length that it is, mostly because a lot of the game is kinda forgettable. This game does improve on combat with more weapon variety and contains some of the best writing and characters in the series.

A most perfect conclusion to the Silent Hill series. With its fantastic art direction, soundtrack, breakneck pace and toughest scares, this is a certified classic survival horror game. Though other Silent Hill games exist, none were able to be quite as scary or give quite as much of a satisfying wrap up to the town and characters as this one did.

keeps the improved gameplay from 2 while serving as a great continuation to the first game. easily the best in the series that ive played by far.

There will be spoilers in this review, marked for you to know. Before that mark, it is spoiler-free.

Silent Hill 3 is a great addition to the series, with possibly the best visual atmosphere of the 3 that I've played so far. The textures and music get so abrasive at times, it feels like the game itself is full of outward hatred towards everything, it's a very unique feeling I've gotten from a game.

The gameplay is what you would expect from a Silent Hill game, rather clunky and a product of the PS1-era movement days, but still enjoyable enough to not severely detract from your playing. I felt like the camera was much better and less finnicky in this than in the 2 games that came before it.

The game falls very flat for me in the character department. Heather is a very well-made protagonist, following in the upgraded footsteps laid by James in the predecessor, and I felt very sympathetic to her journey in the story, but I can not say the same for the other people that she comes across in the game.

=== SPOILERS FROM HERE ===

Claudia is my least favorite Silent Hill character so far, even more than useless-ass Cybil. I get that she's supposed to be an insane religious fanatic, but it's so frustrating to listen to her babble every time she comes on the screen. What's worse is that near the end of the game, they try to get you to sympathize with her. I don't want to sympathize with her, she killed my dad and wants me to birth a god, fuck off. Vincent is no better, an annoying smug aura perpetuating everything he says. I get that's the point, but it doesn't make it any less grating to hear him talk down to you about his "knowledge."

Speaking of that, that's another thing this game gets wrong for me. Silent Hill 1 was heavily based around pure psychological horror with the occult stuff being in the background. Silent Hill 2 was psychological horror with no occult matter whatsoever, instead looking more inward and speaking on depression, guilt, and judgement. Silent Hill 3 could have been a great blend of those 2 games, but instead chose to go full on occult horror. I think it works for the most part, but I feel like they could have had such an interesting story if they talked more about how Heather felt about who she was, and that battle was more apparent throughout the entire game. Instead, she feels like a pawn in a game that other characters are playing, and she doesn't get the treatment that James got in SH2.

Overall, I still think the game is great. Improved gameplay, visuals, and sound over the first 2 make its rocky story and annoying characters tolerable. Plus, c'mon, it's a Team Silent game. There's not much I can say to convince someone of its quality other than that.
