Not a final review - Ongoing impressions

Controls for Mario in SM64 are pretty smooth. You find yourself wishing you had a full-360 control of the camera, but the right stick is an improvement over the C buttons.

Currently at 96 stars, trying to go for 120 before Ultimate Bowser. It's been a huge pleasure to revisit this game.

On Sunshine, the emulation is making everything look really good except for the cutscenes - certain voice lines, particularly from the Piantas, sound extremely muffled. And then the cropping and brightness settings they're using really make the cutscenes incongruous with the gameplay.

I'm one of those who ranks Sunshine third among these three games and I'm still struggling. Mario is so damn slippery when landing on platforms, that it irrationally angers me. The music and gameplay animation makes me happy, though.

The Ultimate game. 3 brand new games for $60? Amazing deal. I don't know why the games have different graphics but all 3 of them are great. Mastered em all.

Let's be honest, you're buying this for Galaxy and playing 64 on the go, other than that if you find it, you better hope it isn't $60 because this isn't worth it for it

as a collection it's incredibly lazy with it only having the 3 games and each soundtrack per game. No art gallery, no behind the scenes of each game, nothing. Plus your playing 60 big boys for this, to put that into perspective you can get both the Crash and Spyro remakes for about 60 to 70 buck, they are both fully made from the ground up, while here your only getting widescreen HD, not even 60FPS, and 64 isn't even in Widescreen what the fuck, but and this is a BIG but this is the cheapest way for you to illegal play Sunshine and 64, plus you can play Galaxy without motion controls the way God intended, so I guess if you've never played these games and you wanna play them go right ahead.

kinda weird, but at least it gave me an easy way to play all three games. i wish they worked harder on this

Reviewers, writers, gamers, etc: nooooo you can't just rerelease the games with minimal work done so that it only barely looks or plays differently when companies like Bluepoint are out here doing complete overhauls of older games T-T

me: haha luma go "TRANSFORRRRRRM"

Good collection of Emulator's however I would've loved to have had more options for screen filters, resolution, and of course having the best 3D Mario Galaxy 2 included.

As I played through 100% of each of these games I realised how each one has a strength that if all put together would make the perfect game. Which is what happened when we got Odyssey.

Subpar emulation of three masterpieces

Score: 4/10

Only two of the games here are good and only one is great, but that doesn't stop the fact that this is a great package. Other then 64 which is a piece of garbage that people need to accept is terrible.

There is not much to complain about when it comes to what can be regarded as three of the most popular and enjoyed games of all-time. If you are looking for hours of fun to take you away from the terrible world we live in today, then this collection is perfect. The price of €60 may seem hefty to many, but for me, Nintendo could have easily sold these three games separately and people would have still bought them, so I am glad that something that once seemed like a far-off rumour was able to exist physically in my hands.

Obviously, the collection would have been perfected if it had been remakes of the three games, rather than just upscaled ports, but sometimes in life not everything can be the ideal version of what you would want. I too would have adored remakes of these three games, but my want for remakes does not detract from my enjoyment of playing the originals.

god damn i love rosalina. luigis purple coins is my hell. i have only played galaxy so far and I don't know if I will continue because I didn't grow up with the other games and they're way harder

everything about this port is so vacuous it made me wonder if i even liked these games to begin with. fucking disney vault ass bullshit fuck off

Nintendo did a worse job of porting mario 64 to the switch then homebrew developers

I'd love to give this game a lower rating because it's incredibly lazy with no widescreen on SM64 and no extra features like an art gallery or video gallery. It's just bare bones as can be for all three games. That said, all three games are some of the greatest of all-time, and this is currently the best (official) way to play them.

A title that revolutionized the industry that sadly doesn't hold up, a deeply flawed but great experience, and a bonafide masterpiece that perfected the 3D platforming formula all bundled together in a disappointingly low effort collection. Like them or hate them, these three games are iconic parts of video game history, and they deserved better. Had 64 and Sunshine been updated to include some quality of life improvements, as well as given fresh coats of paint, this would've been quite possibly the best collection ever. Sadly, this is what we got instead.

If you want to play three classic Mario titles from the comfort of your Switch, this'll definitely do the trick. Is it worth $60? Absolutely not. It also shouldn't be a limited release and there's no good reason Super Mario Galaxy 2 isn't included. A blatantly lazy cash grab from Nintendo.

8 million copies sold.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is quite the complicated case, with a multitude of issues and controversies but I am going to preface this review with this: I will be reviewing the collection in itself based on how good it is as a collection and less so the games inside said collection. If I were to base this game on how good it is as 3 of the greatest games of all time, it would walk away with an easy 5 stars.

That being said, this is a pretty awful collection, especially when it's being marketed as the big event for Mario's 35th anniversary. Nothing here is all that different from how you would play these games on the Nintendo 64, GameCube and Wii and there is no included extras outside of the soundtrack, and in an era where you can listen to videogame music for free online, it basically just means that you are paying that 60$ for the games. There's no artbook, no exclusive developer interviews, no betas, no unused content, nothing but some soundtracks and some decent emulation.

Let's talk about that emulation, shall we? It's actually really good. I played through all of Mario Galaxy with no problems in framerate or quality and even in handheld mode this thing can take a beating. Some of the quality of life improvements are nice, I like being able to use my JoyCon for picking up starbits and the way they handled the lack of pressure sensitive triggers in Sunshine is really good in my opinion. I always had a hard time trying to get the water pressure just right so Mario would actually stand in place while I was aiming. But then there's the things they really messed up on. As anyone who has played Super Mario 64 will tell you, the camera is inverted automatically, with no way to change it, and it feels awkward. I often have to swivel my camera all the way around because I mess up one button press and then I just mess up the jump because Mario 64's camera controls are still mapped like they are buttons, which was my biggest problem with that game and something I was really hoping they would fix in this collection.

However, having all three of these games in the same place, upscaled and put on a console that you can take anywhere makes this a good buy if you can pick it up in the limited time that it is out. If you just want to play one of these games, then I would just get a Wii and play Sunshine or Galaxy, or wait for Mario 64 to inevitably get released on Switch as a standalone title, but if you want to play at least two of them, it's worth your money.

Forgot who said this but, essentially a "collection of great games, not a great collection of games". Very barebones for a game celebrating Nintendo's biggest franchise.

Camera control settings, widescreen support on 64, extras (instruction manuals, promotional art, etc.) all would have been nice. Taking a look at other game collections (Kirby's Dream Collection, Sonic Mega Collection, even Super Mario All Stars) really paints this collection as a dull effort.

More effort should have been put in the presentation of these titles.

I bought this to finally finish Mario 64 and Sunshine, something little kid me could not do back then. My quick reviews on the first two is that they do not hold up and there is no real need to play them longer than say the first 2 hours to appreciate what they were doing at the time.

This collection as a whole is kind of sad when held up to others of its kind that also try to showcase the behind the scenes making of these childhood games for some folks. Everything in here just feels bare bones. Even the minor touch ups and game soundtracks stuck in the game just aren't enough in my opinion to make these re-releases feel valuable for a limited time release.

Don't feel like you need to buy a marked up copy of this if you didn't buy a copy before the cut off date in March 2021. It's honestly not even worth the $60 price tag it was sold for.

a three star collection of five star games

To celebrate Mario's 35th Anniversary, Nintendo released a compilation of Mario's 3D games. "Super Mario Galaxy 2"? What's that? All we have in this package is Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy. No extras, no concept art or anything like that. We do have soundtracks but, overall it not that crazy.

Now the controversy begins. It was announced that it would be a limited edition release till March 31st 2021. Both physical and digital releases of the game are limited. People leaked the game and it was found out that they are just emulations (mainly). SM64 and SMS are running off of Nintendo made emulators and SMG is being compiled on the spot but, an emulator is used for graphics and such.

This version of SM64 is the Shindou version. This means no BLJ's or gay Bowsers. The camera gets inverted at times and it's a PAIN getting used to it. If you've never played the games congrats you aren't going to have issues. If you have muscle memory of the original then it's gonna be hard to adapt. Overall, if you don't mind the small changes and inverted camera then have fun.

Nintendo has starved us of SMS for ages. This is the first rerelease of the game in over 18 years. I really enjoyed this one particularly, mainly because there have been little to no changes to the game. It's now in 16:9 but, its still the same old SMS. A good thing for speedrunners and people who don't want to play the game the right way.

Mario Galaxy is 60 FPS and 16:9. Looks fantastic. Doesn't hold up as well as it used to. Controls are quite clunky and its hard to between the freeroam aspects of SMS and SM64 to the linear clunky gameplay of SMG.

It was a good play but is it worth 60 dollars? In my opinion, yes. If you have played these games in the past and aren't desperately needing them then I'd say pass. If you want these classics on the go or haven't played any of them then go get the game.

While all three of the games are good, Sunshine and 64 being absolute masterpieces. That being said the collection itself is not worth the asking price. Fine emulation all around, I found very little bugs (though I'm usually not one to notice frame rate issues and the like) but the dearth of content outside of these three old games is appalling. Should have been released for 20 bucks if it was just going to be three Mario ROMs ported to the switch.

In this collection you have the game that defined the 3d platforming genre, you got one of the best 3d marios eveer made, and sunshine.

And while those games are still great and a must play, the collection in the other hand doesn't hold up at all. I know this wasn't going to be a remake, just the same games, but there is barely to none quality of life improvment here, like if you get stuck on a level, good luck to have patience to go through a game over screen over and over again because the collection can't even save your life count.

it is not a Mario's worthy collection , is just 3 game bundled together for full price, honestly if i said this was a bubsy collection i would have been too rude to bubsy.

Weird how barebones this collection is, and honestly not the ideal way to play any of these games, but Mario Galaxy alone is worth the price of admission if you have never played. Weird that the only bonus feature is the option to listen to the soundtracks though. I feel like with a little extra content this could have been a great package for both oldheads and people who want to play classics they may have missed, but it feels like it was pumped out last minute and is therefore only really worth it if you missed these on original release.

you get 3 amazing games but the execution and content besides the games are lacking

3 of my all-time favorite Mario games packed in one? Yes please.
