I desperately plead to Nintendo for the millionth time, FUND PORTS OF THE EARLIER GAMES OR MAKE A NEW ONE. Starfy actually is like Kirby in the way that the entire game is both cutesy but also sometimes difficult. I've played through this one so, so many times and I am dying for them to make a new one in English (or port the old ones!).
This platformer is incredibly underappreciated. Easily one of my favorites. It's a lot like Kirby in many ways (cute platformer where the protagonist has transformations) but has a lot of its own charm that makes it stick out. Both gameplay and story are nice. I wish we got localizations of the previous games in the series and that the series continued past this one.

Unfortunately, the levels design for most of the worlds is very bland. Often times you will find yourself traveling through a blank area with inconsequential enemies.
At the same time, some of the characters are so cute I could cry. The artwork is good, and the environments can be interesting. The music was good too, especially the boss fight tracks. The optional stuff like the mini games and collectibles were enjoyable, although getting the treasure chests were pretty tedious/not rewarding. The extra stuff at the end very much surprised me because of how well they utilized the mechanics given to you.
I'm really mixed on this game because it has very high highs and low lows, although I feel like most of the time I spent was on the lows. After playing through world 1 I dropped the game for half a year and after picking it up the next few worlds gave the same bad impression. However, I kept through it and ended up finding some enjoyable parts of the game.

The Legendary Starfy is actually the fifth game in the series, but the first game seen here in the States. You play as Starfy who finds a little rabbit that lost his memory and must find crystal shards that will restore his memory. Yeah, it’s not too great, but this game is clearly aimed towards little kids.
The game has tight controls and is easy to grasp with Starfy swimming underwater mostly, but he’s really slow on land. The goal of the game is just to navigate screen to screen, collect little stars (currency in the game), and watch cutscenes until the end. It gets very boring after the second chapter, and most older experienced gamers will turn it off. The game is just way too easy with enemies that don’t attack you. Yeah, you have to run into them to get hurt. Navigating the levels for treasure chests and stars is probably the only incentive to go through this game, but the items you can buy are pretty lame.
Try dressing a star up. It looks pretty bad, and obviously only appeals to small children or simple-minded people. Even the boss fights are easy and can be killed in just a few hits not to mention a save before a door, then a save when you go through it then no save until the end of the level. Yeah makes no sense, but kids won’t really notice or care. Plus, you can save in the start menu! Do we really need this many saves?! Well, you can find different abilities to help Starfy that is attached to the touchscreen such as Moe’s ability to sense treasure, a mermaid’s ability to give you level info as you go, and you can transform into a fire-breathing dino, but it’s not as fun as you would think.
There are four different mini-games that are boring and pretty lame even with other people, but little kids will enjoy them…I guess. There is even a little talk show thing that Moe does, but it’s as strange and lame as can be, so I don’t even think kids will get this. Overall the game has a nice art style and looks really cute, has crisp clean visuals, but the underlying game is just for casual DS players and kids. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone remotely further than the most casual of casual players or kids.

Another overlooked DS classic, who'd have thunk it? The Legendary Starfy is far more than a "Kirby of the Sea": it's a heartfelt, adorable game that, despite being a little easier than most platformers, absolutely oozes with charm and spirit in a way that makes it nearly impossible to hate. Its gameplay is fluid and frenetic, with multiple powers to unlock and make you come back to levels for even more goodies. The music is grooving, and the characters are some of the sweetest on the system. Their optimism is infectious. If you're looking for a game that'll just fill you with a warm fuzzy feeling, I can't reccomend The Legendary Starfy enough.
Also I remember the final boss being way harder as a kid what

The fact we have yet to get the previous 4 games in this franchise in the West is a fucking crime of the highest caliber, because if this is anything to go off of we're missing out so hard.
In a similar vein to Kirby's cutesy but incredibly fun platformers, Starfy specializes itself with underwater gameplay and manages to make an entire franchise out of underwater levels fun as hell. Genuinely one of Nintendo's most underrated and unknown series through no fault but their own.

This game over stays its welcome by a LOT. It can be very fun and creative at times, the minigames are hell of fun, but the overall level design and gameplay are kinda boring most of the time. Starfy has a very limited moveset, feels very unresponsive and heavy, which makes much of the platforming a nightmare. The worst part tho is the dialogues, they are too much for a game like this, and it can be fine but i think it should convey information using gameplay elements. The game is beautifull, and very well crafted in many aspects, but its not for me and i ended up dropping it twice.
